amon91
MSE personally, mainly because it doesn't get in my way at all. I'm usually pretty conscious when browsing online so the AV is not my first line of defense. sc302 Veteran Posted May 24, 2010 Veteran Share Posted May 24, 2010 mse if you don't want the nags avira if you do. imo both are fine products. avira will get things that mse misses and mse will get things avira misses. crap shoot if you ask me. Duality
I always tend to write the same thing in all of these threads: there is no "best" antivirus. Some will miss things that others will catch, and vice versa - and add to that the differences in software and hardware combinations between machines, what works well for one person and their PC may not work well for others at all. I suggest you try a few, and maybe even some trials for paid antivirus apps. Pick one that suits your needs and makes you feel most safe. Detection rates can be found on sites such as AV Comparatives et al. +Random Stranger Subscriber¹ Posted May 24, 2010 Subscriber¹ Share Posted May 24, 2010 Personally, i love Avira Antivir and Avast!!!! both great. i switched to avira from avast, due to better interface, but recently i checked up on computers that i unstalled avast on, and the newest version is amazing. regestration is so easy now, and interface is modern and great. detection wise, both avira and avast are about the same - they are great. just like security essentials apparently is. but i am a loyal fun of free antiviruses they i used for years, and i trust them more then MSE. (just as i also love and use spybot and adaware - both free versions) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/903892-best-free-antivirus/page/2/#findComment-592664400 Share on other sites
GenBlood
I use MSE and Spybot Search & Destroy for my system for virus and malware. The only issue is Spybot has to be manually updated weekly. Other then that ... it works and that's what counts. LP User
I am looking to write an article on free virus checkers and security software. Do the free checkers always perform at least we well as the paid alternatives? I notice most paid AV's are bloatware with a huge footprint. Marshall Veteran Posted May 30, 2010 Veteran Share Posted May 30, 2010 I didn't say it was the only solution, it's the best form factor in staying virus free. Aside from my common sense, I have Nod32 to back me up, but then again he wanted a "free" solution so mentioning it was redundant. ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/903892-best-free-antivirus/page/2/#findComment-592686564 Share on other sites
trag3dy
So how does MSE compare to Nod32? I have a paid version of Nod32 but my subscription runs out in 2 or 3 weeks and I'm not sure if I want to renew it or not. If MSE is comparable I'll go with that and save myself some money. soldier1st
MSE or Windows Defender, AVG is now a bloated av even for the free one.antivir is good but has many false positives(you can adjust as needed) eset on certain systems can cause weird issues. the rest are either bloated or obsolete. treemonster
i use a avira antivir. don't mind closing the daily ad window when it updates. has caught quite a few viruses on sites that no one else detected until it was too late. and it's very lite. does show the occasional false positive, but not a big deal.
