The lurker thing worries me tbh.. I'd rather that frequent "guests" register. But I don't know why they don't! We always have a much higher amount of guests than logged in members in the forums :/

Everybody has their reasons. I think shyness plays a large role in why people don't though. They don't want to look like a fool when they ask a question that might be stupid, or they are trying to learn from reading already established posts. Neowin is a great community, but we're also a great resource of information. I also have to admit, sometimes when people ask a simple question, we sometimes get members pointing out how they should already know this information, or to google it. I know I used to occasionally pull that attitude, but now I'd rather just help out from the get-go. It's better on people's self-esteem, it helps them out, and it makes the community look more inviting.

I figure if we try to make these little efforts, then we'll attract more people and make the community grow even more.

The situation is similar on other forums. As previous poster said, many people visit forum just to read already answered questions.

Seconded. Helping people instead of yelling 'JFGI!' is the key to attracting more members.

I personally do not care for even one of the features Neowin gives me by subscribing. I just did it cause I've been reading tech news here for years and I like the way it has been evolving, I'd like too see more news and important information on products, but it can't have everything.

You have almost 7000 posts on this forum and you feel you don't need to support it even a little bit? Who cares about what you get for subscribing. It's supporting a forum that you post on quite regularly. Such a weird attitude to take.

Just IMO, but I have thousands of posts and I support the site by visiting, giving them increased money for ad banners. I'm not going to pay money to support every single site I visit. For those that do subscribe, kudos.

It's a very good idea to always read through a tread if you are going to post in it because the situation have changed on page 13. To quote what I said on page 13:

So indirectly making this thread, I made people subscribe lol. :D

After so many people say they subscribe to support, I'm inclind to include myself as well. On this thursday, I might subscribe to the first tier.

Neowin has been a great support forum for me. I have been visiting this forum everyday and I did mean everyday. Every time I get on my computer every morning I click on my Neowin forums bookmark link and read new stuff. I have posted for help and have received help. After some people here noticed that I am "one-sided minded", I decided to "grow up" and give back what I benefit so much since 2003 (when I signed up). *Me waits for Thursday.*

I bought my subscription before posting my first post. The reason I bought it is because I do not like viewing advertisements that much so I do not mind supporting the site by paying for a subscription which allows these to be removed. I also do like some of the other perks as they can be useful. I have yet to start a blog but I am not one to blog, I just prefer to read through them. I do not think anything needs to be added to the subscription packages either as they are pretty decent for the price, I have been on several forum which charge $11-16 dollars a month [never mind for a year] for a premium package and you got hardly anything for it. Overall I think the subscriptions here at neowin are excellent and they are not forced upon the members.

I'd be the same. I wouldn't subscribe unless there was a worthwhile benefit.

Members who have been here for a long time shouldn't feel pressured to contribute.

+1 It took me quite a while to even register. Shyness is probably the no. 1 reason why I don't post a lot.

    • $80 or 90%, anything else would be financial suicide one way or another.
    • Or... just use Bitwarden. Free, and has on-prem option as well. Works both on desktop and mobile, wherever you are. The age of local password files is over.
    • Thanks
    • I actually got to use one of those so called "backup codes" once. It was for a customer, I choose the backup code option, and by the grace of god, they actually hade them printed out. Imagine my surprise, when after using the backup code, Google then told use we had to enter a code they just sent to the gmail address we currently did not have access to. I was not amused, Google backup codes should be the end all get out of jail free card, because you had to have access to the account to even get them.
    • On the topic of being locked out of a service. Recently two different friends of mine got locked out of their Google accounts. Both were hack attempts and one of them is waiting 30 days before he can get back in. He had backup codes and MFA but not a passkey. It was a browser token hack. Anyhow he has to wait 30 days for the dispute or whatever to end. The other person only had a password and is screwed losing all of the email, docs and years of photos. Google won’t help her at all. Her fault because she had no backup/recovery setup. Enable passkeys if possible. Also do NOT use browser based password managers. If using a cloud service make sure it is one you can fully sync to one of your devices so you can back it up. Like a PC or Mac with some backup drive plugged into it. Google is the worst to use IMHO. You can’t sync your photos at all. You have to use the “Take Out” service which is manual and takes days. That service strips the meta data from your photos. Also Google Docs synced to a device are useless without a Google accounts. MS Office/Libre Office is not going to open a link to a Google doc to a dead account.
