SEGA: More sophisticated Kinect games within a year

SEGA West president Mike Hayes believes Kinect will receive more sophisticated games as the year goes on.

Speaking with CVG, Hayes said people complaining about Kinect letting the hardcore down at E3 are being a ?little harsh?, and that by this time next year everyone will see what the device is really capable of.

?My guess is when we?re at E3 next year, more of the features of Kinect will be in use by developers,? he said. ?I think you?ll find more clever and sophisticated applications then.

?We?re not going to be able to develop something [for the hardcore] in under a year, which is frankly what we?ve had?.

In this regard, Sega is planning to focus on new and original games for the device as time goes on.

?We want to do more clever things on it ? create original ways of using it, rather than just taking existing ideas and not just doing the same thing,? said Hayes.

?Having said that, of course, with the success that we?ve had with Wii, there are a lot of motion games we would like to reinvent for Move and Kinect.

?We?ve got one good idea and hopefully something will be out the back end of next year, perhaps early 2012, which we think will use the aspects of Kinect a lot more originally and in a more sophisticated way.?

Mircosoft revealed Kinect at its E3 conference last week.

It?s due for release in November.

I really don't get why this is a hard concept for people to get. It just makes sense that the more time you get with a new technology, the better games are going to get.

So you think that Kinect is going to get so precise that you can actually use it for a 3D platformer... I just don't see how doing something that complicated would be possible or practical.

Did I ever say that?

But you're looking at it from too basic an approach. Of course it will never handle a 3D platformer if you're simply using your hands. If you use your entire body, maybe a developer will find out a good way to implement it. But I'm not holding my breath. All I said was that the longer developers have with the technology, the better the games are going to get. Nothing more.

You're spot on, devs have had what? Maybe ~6 months or so with the tech? I doubt MS gave it out back at last years E3, too early then. So it makes sense that the first batch of games are going to be basic in nature.

    • No Steam release. It's gonna fail on PC. Even an Epic Online engineer said that people go there for the free stuff and then immediately go back to Steam.
    • Nice. Admittedly, his other games never interested me, but this seems pretty cool.
    • It's time to say goodbye to Edge and switch back to Firefox. There's no way to disable the ugly rounded corners that appear everywhere. Not even on the page frame. No one uses screens with rounded corners, you idiots.
    • Being on Github makes it more trustable since I can see the code at any point.
    • Gen Atlas is the next game from Shadow of the Colossus creator, this time with giant robots by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The mind behind widely well-received games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, Fumito Ueda, showed up at Summer Game Fest today, and that was to reveal his latest project. Being developed by genDESIGN, Gen Atlas is incoming with what looks to be plenty of mech and robot action. Watch the reveal trailer, which makes not much sense, above. The game will have players waking up on an abandoned planet where deserted facilities and grand designs from the original creators remain. Soon, they will stumble upon a colossal robot, from which players gain access to the power to change the world. "Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more," adds the studio. The gameplay snippets seen in the trailer show the player character climbing giant robots (as expected from the creator), while also controlling these titans somehow as well. This is a fully single-player open-world adventure. “The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game,” says Fumito Ueda, CEO and creative director of genDESIGN. “Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.” Before gaining the name Gen Atlas, Ueda first announced this project back in 2024 with the codename Project Robot. Interestingly, this will be a project being funded and published by Epic Games, which should mean that a Steam release is out of the question. Gen Atlas will be releasing on Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. A release date has not been announced just yet.
