My Gaming History

A little about me:

I enjoy gaming. It's a fun way to kill time. It's also becoming a good way to

learn and experience new things and getting more educational as they learn to

use it as a tool and not just a waste of time that kills kid's brain cells and

social lives.

I'm a slightly aged gamer. I'm not hardcore

but I'm not a noob or inexperienced gamer. I've had computer games and consoles

dating back to the Commodore 64 & Atari 2600 all the way up to today. I won't

reveal my exact age although I might have it available in my profile lol.

I use gaming as a way to get away from the

stresses of life, to relax and to at least verbally (with a headset) get out

socially. I'm a shy quiet guy who goes about his business as quietly as

possible. I like to do things for others and make others happy. For me though,

I like to do it without them knowing. It makes me feel great to see a smile on someone's

face, especially if they don't know it had anything to do with me. I must have

something wrong with me lol. I don't really like taking credit for things when things

go right. I want people to just be happy and not feel like it's because of

someone else or that they feel like they owe something in return. I don't want

anything in return. That smile is what did it or the excitement on their faces

when they get that new game or console (just an on-topic example lol). I'll do

just about anything for anyone, even strangers, as long as it's not something

unreasonable or illegal, etc.

I'm in-between being a casual and hardcore

gamer. I love my games but I keep it to a level where it doesn't get carried

away and take away from my life outside of that little area around the TV. I

get right into my games though and get very vocal. I know when I'm around kids

or the hardcore gamers and will get very mean and loud or quiet and help people

out when they're obviously noobs. I'm not a pushover. I can handle myself in

any situation in game or in life.

I now bring you onto my thoughts and opinions

of this topic and its sub-categories. Hopefully some of you read through it as

it took a bit of time to come up with it and I know it's a lot more than

probably wanted or necessary. I'm just giving a full overview of one person's atmosphere

and life around gaming.

Good luck and happy reading!

Current Generation:

I selected the PS3 for current generation because of its capabilities

and what I've seen it can do. I know the 360 is right up there with it but I've

been against paying to play (online) so I have less experience with it lately.

I have a 360 before a PS3 but when I switched, I couldn't ever find a reason to

go back to the 360. I had it sitting on a shelf in my closet for months but

recently lent it out because I don't use it. I might get it back when Kinect

comes out if it impresses me. The PS3 just blows my mind away with quality

compared to the games I saw in the 360. This is going back a year or two now

though. Anyways, my opinions of the 360 a pretty outdated so they're not really

valid and therefore, can't bash the 360. It's a really good console too.

The numbers for me are not a shock. It would be nice to see more votes to see

how the whole population of Neowin thinks but I don't think it would be much

different. I forgot about the PC gamers and believe that the quality is

probably a lot better on the PC but I don't have the money to put into a system

that can run games at the level I want to see. If I can't run it at the level I

expect to see, I'm not going to play it on that platform. If I had the money, I

would do it. I know hardware is cheap now but I have an extremely small budget

at the moment for that type of stuff. I'd love to become a PC gamer someday.

Current Generation - Handhelds

I haven't had too much experience with handhelds. I never did own

a Gameboy or any other handheld until the PSP came out. That's because I've

always been one for quality graphics and games. I've very picky. So my opinion

so far is that the PSP by far out does any other handheld for that reason of

quality games and graphics. Remember that it's only my very small opinion too

though. My son has had a Gameboy Advance and DS Lite plus the PSP. He likes his

DS Lite and I plan on getting him the 3DS this holiday season as a gift for his

birthday, exactly one week before Xmas, [(sucks for him)I do try to keep the

two separated as much as possible but others don't]. The games on that platform

just appeal to the kids a lot more and that's cool.

I do find myself and my son lately to be playing a lot more games on my iPhone.

I always find it dead now because he plays the games on it until it dies lol. I

am looking to get him an iPod Touch too for the maybe Xmas so if there's anyone

on here selling one of the later generations, I'm interested in selling one

contact me. I'll pay for shipping etc., obviously. I don't like to buy new if I

don't have to. I know they're reliable when used too if treated properly.

I'm surprised they put the 3DS in and not just the plain DS or DS Lite and

they'd be more relevant to this poll. I'm guessing that's probably where the

votes for Other are coming from. The iPhone/iPad/iPod touch should either be

changed to iPhone/Android or to Mobile devices because it's not just those

devices that have the mobile games but all the other phones and slates, etc.

that do too.

That's it from me on the current handhelds.

Previous Generation (Includes handhelds)

I selected the Nintendo NES. It looks and is funny to see it as Nintendo NES as

the N in NES stands for Nintendo lol. Most of you already know that already

though. I just thought I would pick at it for fun. I had to pick it because

that was the biggest platform I grew up on. I had every one of those listed

minus the Jaguar. I still love playing an Atari or NES game here or there

(emulated of course, I wish I still had my consoles). The SNES was big around

the time all my cousins were growing up and I would go over to their place with

my mom to babysit them so I played a lot of it with them. It was directed more

towards them though so I wasn't really a fan. I loved the Genesis and had that

one for the longest time and that's where I was introduced to my all-time

favourite game franchise, NHL 90- todays NHL 11 (PS3). Come join me and play a

few games of hockey on the PSN. My PSN & XBL ID's are listed at the bottom

of this post. I have never missed a year with that game and never will. I've

done that with almost all EA Sports games that have been around all those

years. Madden has been one that I've only missed two or three years including

this years. Issues with the games code itself has got me upset with them as

this one major glitch has been around for 3 years now and doesn't look like

they plan on fixing it. I'm rambling on about another topic though so I'll

stop.

I chose the Playstation platform all the way through until the Xbox 360 because

if the obvious reason that they were just the best at pretty much everything

until the 360. I switched because I just couldn't wait any longer for the PS3

to come and wanted something new. I skipped the original Xbox because the PS2

just had everything I wanted and was a great system. There was no incentive to

jump ship.

Other than the NES, Nintendo never appealed to me and always lacked pretty much

anything I wanted out of gaming itself and that was quality graphics and great

games. Nintendo has some really fun games and can't take away from what they're

doing. They'll always be good at what they do. Nintendo will hopefully be

around for a very long time. They're good with the family oriented stuff and

appeal to any generation. Glad someone's focusing most of their effort towards

that area.

Conclusion:

I just want to thank you for actually taking

to time or in some of your view probably wasting your time reading this. I know

you want really get anything from it but again as stated above. It's just one person's

atmosphere and life around gaming.

I surprisingly do have a life outside of

gaming and enjoy most of it as I hope you do.

Enjoy & Happy Gaming!

Dreamcast. It was beyond it's time. First console for online, accepted mouse and keyboard inputs, had quake 3 xplatform play, memory cards had displays on them, and the graphics were just amazing. Too bad Sega went bust so shortly after its release. I still believe Sony copied from the Dreamcast to make the ps2 what it was :p

I voted Ps3, Ps1, and Other.

Now, I'm a Sony kind of guy, So my opinions might be slightly biased. But the reason why I voted for the Ps3 is because, Graphic wise, Xbox360 isn't any better. Most of the games that come out for the Ps3 and the Xbox360 ended up on having more content on the Ps3 version. Now I'm not saying that every game on the Ps3 has a crap load of more stuff. But I have noticed that the Xbox360 ver. would normally come out first, than a few weeks/months later the Ps3 ver. would come out and have a few more items/armors more side missions/quests and just little things that I found enjoyable.

I always see people saying the xbox360 online play is waaaaaay better, but Having friends who own the Xbox360...I honestly don't see much of a difference minus one has free online when the other doesn't...Also the Ps3 has more features built into the system itself than the Xbox360. Now, it's much MUCH better now but I did have a problem with the fact that the Xbox360 had 77% of there systems called back because they would break. Also, when buying a game for the 360, please buy damage protection for the games, because if you move the 360 while it's reading a disc, don't be shocked too see some serious laser burn.

BUT While yes I just pretty much beat up on the 360 for the entire time. That doesn't mean it's a Horrible system that the Devil created to suck out our souls or something. I'm actually also looking forward to buying one because while yes I think the Ps3 is better. Any real gamer can admit that the 360 has some Amazing games on it. Some of which I would throw down another 250 dollars down to get a system to play them.

I picked the PS1 because while yes the Graphics are not nearly as good as the Ps2, I fell in love with more of the Ps1 games than on any prev gen system. My top 3 would have to be Silent hill, Legend of Dragoon, and Soul Reaver 1. I thought these games were amazing and if you have a Ps1/Ps3 and ever get a chance to play it, do so because I'm sure if you can get over the graphics you will love the storyline, game play, and the over all awesomeness of these games.

I picked Gameboy color/adv because My childhood consisted of a lot of Pokemon and I LOVED playing Pokemon red on my gameboy color.

i did not vote because when you put PC in there it makes it harder to choose but strictly looking at consoles and stuff i would say...

Current Gen = XBox360

Previous Gen = XBox1 (because of it's great moding capabilities as it was by far the best console out there for moding as it could play all sorts of video files etc with XBMC etc etc)

although prior to Xbox1/PS2 generations (i.e. prior to 2000 basically), which is prior to a 'modern console', i would say N64 would be my favorite. (i am old enough to remember Atari 2600 Jr and NES to. ill be 31 in a month. but out of the 'old days' (i.e. prior to 3D) i would say NES or Genesis/SNES are about the only real choices)

as far as handhelds... my money is on original gameboy (original tetris on gameboy is about the only game that's still great to this day) simply because by the time you got modern handhelds there is way to much of a gap between those and state of the art stuff where as back in the day a console was not THAT much ahead of a portable system.

p.s. i did not count PC but if you want to count that i would choose that over just about everything in the long run simply because shooters are best played on that because of the mouse+keyboard which is far better as far as aiming at stuff on screen.

Current: Xbox 360 (it's simply the one I put the most hours in, period - and the controller's great)

Previous: SNES (my favorite library of games - SMW, Chrono, FF IV/VI, F-Zero.....)

Handheld: DS Lite so I can play GBA games too

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
