Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1963.0

Please tell me they FINALLY fixed the most annoying bug, which is the bug where the icons to programs load ridiculously slow when exploring files! If they haven't patched this yet, what are they waiting for? They better fix it!! It's maybe the only issue from it being one of the best, near perfect anti-virus programs.

Anyone confirm? I disabled MSE just because of that.

Official "release notes" from the Ongoing Beta newsgroups...

"This version of the Microsoft Security Essentials [...]

contains some enhancements and compatibility fixes to facilitate a

seamless upgrade experience to future versions of Microsoft Security

Essentials."

Though as far as I'm aware, an updated engine was recently released as well, of which users are reporting much faster scan times.

If you need confirmation, it means you've never noticed it or are not affected by it, which means you don't need to disable it.

Personally I've never encountered this issue. :)

Updating now, going to see if these three still exist:

Slow loading of icons (typically a single folder full of 15+ shortcuts pointing to programs scattered across a hard disk works best)

Steals focus of the window you're working on when it performs its auto-update from the tray - which shouldn't happen.

Windows Update notifications daily of a virus definition update - which should be in the background as we don't need to be told of this. (the workaround was to untick Recommended Updates in the WU settings)

Cheers, updating!

I think he meant he is encountering the issue, and is asking for confirmation whether this update fixes it.

Is MSE any good? I have not used it in a while and am curious on performance and if it actually works like it should

Everyone seems to stick by their own AV solutions. I've tried it, used it for a month or two when it first came out, but to many small Viruses and Trojans slipped by. Perhaps that has improved but I prefer to stick with established AV solutions like Avast or NOD.

I stick to which ever anti virus makes my system run fastest. The best anti virus solution is the end user. Staying away from stupid sites and avoiding stupid ads.

I use to use AVG but it seem to get slower n slower and more annoying than ever.

Then MSE came along and well it does what I need it to do and it does it fine.

I've never got virus before in my life.

Too many small viruses and trojans are slipping through? What the heck are you doing with your computer? :p

Exchanging documents via an USB flash memory maybe? I had to format three business PCs for my dad just because they were full with adware and spyware that was inserted via USB.

What programs would someone install to a business PC that has adware and spyware? I've had to monitor news releases through thousands of web sites at one of my jobs, and I only ever encountered one spyware issues.

So you have used it? It has not changed since it came out first. It's very good for being free. I belive Avast is the only real competitor in the free category. There are some slightly better antivirus programs, but they cost money. Every year.

    • I just started using Teams (and “New” Oiutlook) at work (instead of Slack) and both are truly abysmal pieces of software.
    • If you are willing to go to approx $200, then as mentioned in your other thread I think a refurbished Pixel 8 will be a great deal that will last you for years. I recently recommended that to someone at work, he was on a strict £200 budget, which got him an excellent conditioned refurbished Pixel 8 here. He's since told me its the best phone he's ever had and feels its a massive upgrade over his old Samsung A series device. I don't know the sites which deal in refurbished devices in the US, however I’m sure you will have some options like we do here. Failing that Ebay is also quite good in my experience. If you wanted something a bit cheaper, then you could maybe go for an older Pixel 7, these will still get security updates until the end of 2027. Even after that you have good third party OS support from LineageOS. It doesn't have to be a Pixel though, you can buy many older devices for a good deal that would be better than a new $100 phone and flash LineageOS to them: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/
    • I don't use one drive, but then I don't use any cloud storage, not even Icloud on my mac. If I did use cloud storage, then I would not use One drive, not because there is anything wrong with it, but because I can use Icloud. The only reason I see to use one drive is if your job requires you to have access to it
    • Not built in, which is not a bad thing. There are ways of adding cloud storage to it, Dropbox is the most well know that also have a client for Linux, but there are others.
