Windows Phone 7 : Porn Booted

Recommended Posts

My Company does a lot of work with Microsoft (we are Gold Partners) and Windows Mobile 6.5 and have been approached by Microsoft to port our Apps to Windows 7 Phone. I am the "Windows Guy" amongst a sea of Linux Gurus so, I spend my most of my day defending Microsoft.

I am less concerned with the lack of porn than that the platform seems to be mimicking iPhone 1 (no cut/paste, no flash, no porn, Windows 7 Marketplace)

I would really like recommend Windows 7 Phone, but am dismayed over the lack of innovation and differentiation.

Been holding out getting a Smart Phone... Waiting for Android to mature, Windows 7 Phone to emerge.

I think I am going to have to get an iPhone (sigh)

Are you for real? Have you actually seen the OS?

Unfortunately due to Microsoft restrictions lower screen resolutions than that of screens of rival phones.

Only the iPhone has a higher screen resolution, and thats something I find funny:

When the iPhone 2g/3g/3gs was stuck with 480x320, most of its users / fans would tell you there was no need for anything higher and hence things like WVGA were stupid. Now thats the iPhone 4g has a higher resolution, its oh god WVGA sucks

You know I bet you people will defend this decision from Microsoft, even though they hated on Apple for doing it.

Microsoft fanboys to defend this decision in 3...2...1....

damn trolls are everywhere. Provide feedback that is on topic or dont post, seriously.

Apple did it, and now MS is doing it. I dont like either way (yes you head me right) and think it there should be some content filtering or way to block certain apps of it is an issue concerning kids seeing it. Otherwise, I dont see why they would block it. But then again, I have no need for porn everywhere I go.

This wasn't a big deal when Apple did it, and I don't remember many people hating Apple when they did it. I don't see this being a problem at all for 99% of customers... and no offense to anyone who thinks it is, but if you're that obsessed with porn that you need to view it everywhere you can take your phone, you need to give your hands some time to heal.

Not only your hands!!...haha

What? No HTML5?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I'm so glad my iPhone 4 is due to arrive next week. :woot:

The web browser doesn't even pass the Acid 2, it's basically a port of the version of trident they used in IE7 with a few bits bolted on to it.

You've been making quite a few incorrect statements thus far.

It's going to have Flash shortly after lunch (unlike the iPhone), and it's rumored to support Silverlight at some point although we don't really know for sure. It uses various pieces of Internet Explorer's past few versions, and is more akin to the desktop version than the mobile version. Unfortunately, there is no HTML 5 support as you previously mentioned, which is a major misfire on Microsoft's part. Rather disappointing in that aspect, but otherwise not that far behind the iPhone Safari.

what the hell?!. Now microsoft will decide what can or what I can NOT have on one OWN PHONE?!. WTF?!. Long live to iphone and iOS!

You've all known this for the last 6 months but only now start to cry foul?

Lol.

Android has been my next choice of mobile O/S and that opinion has only gotten reinforced the last 6 months. Shame too, I really liked WinMO 6.5. :(

Does anyone even visit any HTML5 heavy sites? Neowin doesn't seem to be since I'm viewing it just fine right now in IE8. All the reviews for MIE in WP7 has said it's good even though it lacks flash/SL and HTML5. If web devs have coded their sites for IE7/8 already, which many have done by now, then those sites will work just fine in WP7's browser, minus any flash videos. But flash support isn't MS's job, that's adobes, any lack of it isn't because MS blocked it like Apple has. MS has openly said since Feb that they'll work/working with Adobe to get flash on WP7.

SL support will come as well, once they've got more of the platform on SL4 probably and off of the hybrid SL3/4 they use now.

As for HTML5 support, that'll come to MIE once IE9 is done and they can work off of it's rendering engine, but since it's not done, why mess around with a alpha/beta version that could have god knows how many bugs still in there? Common sense says you use a stable base that you know has wide support from websites already, so IE7/8 it is.

I think porn should be against the contract.

Why?

Don't know why everyone's complaining, I personally prefer this, because otherwise the charts will be filled with trash. See before Apple removed all the babes apps.

If there is more choice, it's better for everybody. You wouldn't have to purchase applications which contain pornography and you wouldn't have to view them even if they're in the charts; Microsoft could have possibly even included a filter to 'filter out adult content for adults'.

There would have been ways they could have restricted these apps from children. I cannot believe Microsoft essentially seem to be saying "adults cannot view, play with or develop adult applications;" what a stupid phillosophy.

How have I been inaccurate, I'm telling it like it is and what it will have at launch and for the months following launch.

No I disagree on the fact it's just behind Safari, Safari 4 for iOS is a modern mobile web browser that supports modern standards and has various means of playing online video, yes no Flash but still better than mobile IE at the moment. The new version of mobile IE fails the Acid 2 test, it gets 12 on the Acid 3, it's a browser that looks like its from years ago.

Why?

Because it just fills the market with **** (sometimes literally). As if 50 Justin Bieber picture puzzles weren't bad enough, now we're going to have 50,000 porn spams. I suppose they could have a separate porn market and charge more for the extra work it creates.

And also if banning porn helps their image and ensures more sales by not causing any controversy, then I also support it for that reason. Business first.

It's your opinion that they're **** though. There is a huge market for pornogrpahy and many find it beneficial to view such material on portable devices.

As for it harming business; it's a shame but it is true that this would hurt their image - this is part of a bigger problem where some in society find pornography unacceptable and judge companies for promoting it; these people often forget that viewing or participating in mainstream pornography does not harm adults in any way and instead, they are just limiting the availability for people who love to view pornography. It's really unfair.

But why does this porn have to be in app form? Everybody gets all puffed up about situation when Apple and Microsoft block porn apps, but nobody ever says why porn needs to be app'ed. Unless you're making some elaborate porn game or something, a simple website would meet the needs of most porn viewers.

Android FTW. Least its not (yet) copying Apple entirely...

Yes, because Android's wild west of a marketplace doesn't have any downsides. Oh, what's that? A wallpaper app that steals personal data? Neat!

Don't know why everyone's complaining, I personally prefer this, because otherwise the charts will be filled with trash. See before Apple removed all the babes apps.

oh yes thank you almighty censorship, for if porn apps were allowed where would all our precious fart applications go that are oh so hillarious

/s :p

this is only for apps

nothing stopping anyone from copying over porn to their devices ^_^

Except that removes the benefit of convenience which one enjoys when they can find the material on their portable device.

That's just like suggesting there is no need for Apple's iPhone YouTube application or even the Facebook application. I find applications much easier to access and use than websites; they can contain features which aid in easier/faster access and better navigation.

Not that I'm for or against Microsoft's decision but what sad ****** needs porn on their phone??

It's much more convenient to access such material on a mobile phone if you are in bed and away from your computer - that is one of the most annoying things I find when I wish to access free porn; I must start up my computer and even sometimes get out of bed when I am comfy. I'm not suggesting all porn apps would be free, but some might be.

    • Microsoft's Copilot Cowork now generally available with usage-based billing by Pradeep Viswanathan Back in March, Microsoft first revealed Copilot Cowork, a new agentic AI experience in Microsoft 365 Copilot through which users can assign tasks to AI to complete in the background. After testing the service with a limited set of customers in Research Preview for a few weeks, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork to customers in the Frontier program on March 30. Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork worldwide for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers. The company also highlighted that Cowork became the fastest-growing feature in the history of its Frontier program. Unlike regular Copilot Chat, Copilot Cowork can run complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks from start to finish in the cloud by using organizational context through Work IQ. When compared to Claude Cowork, Microsoft claims that Copilot Cowork will be 30% to 40% cheaper on average with its Microsoft 365 connector. For now, Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. However, Frontier customers can now use GPT-5.5. Microsoft also announced Cowork 1, a secure fine-tuned model coming in the next few weeks, which is designed to handle everyday Copilot tasks at a lower cost. To access Copilot Cowork, a Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription is required. Usage is billed separately through Copilot Credits, based on model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime. Pay-as-you-go pricing is set at $0.01 per Copilot Credit. To offer IT teams full control over usage costs, Microsoft provides spending limits, usage alerts, user-level controls, reporting, and prepaid usage plans for organizations. Usage-based billing begins today. However, Frontier customers who used Cowork between March 30 and June 16 will not be billed until July 1, 2026. The Microsoft 365 Copilot app now includes a toggle to enter the full Cowork experience. Microsoft is also adding partner plugins, with Enosix, Harvey, LSEG, Miro, monday.com, Moody’s, Morningstar, S&P Global Energy, and TeamsMaestro available now. Adobe, Atlassian, Box, Canva, Databricks, and others are coming soon.
