See http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7files/thread/f47f5bf2-2678-4dae-bbb3-62e202b54b18. Apparently, in the process of removing the advanced search UI and putting in the arguments/filters directly in the search box, this option got removed. So now, to search hidden files, you have to turn on the "Show hidden files" option from Folder Options. ABSOLUTELY STUPID I SAY.

Not a huge fan of windows search either, but you might use it more than you think -- the portion I use all the time is hitting start and typing the program Im wanting to run.

But when it comes to looking for files on my network -- I just run locate32, http://www.locate32.net/ --- yes there is a 64bit version ;) regardless of its name. Fast to index, can be pointed any share on your network, be it a nas or other machine, etc. So quite easy to find anything!!

in the search bar type in search (but don't click anything)

move your mouse up to change search options for files and folders

Click the View Tab, click show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected operating system files

Now click ok and you are good to go.

 -- Thats just a different way of telling him how to get to the folder options, what tuxexplorer already stated.

"you have to turn on the "Show hidden files" option from Folder Options"

that would involve him finding the folder options now wouldn't it. easier than explaining that way then to go to control panel, switch the view to large icons, go into folder options and change it there. I get an error when going to the link posted.

"it isn't a good day if you haven't learned something new. "

Only one thing?? Man that would be a pretty ****ty day, normally I pick up a dozen or so things a day ;)

My fav today was what causes the volcanic action on Io -- caught part of "wonders of the solar system" the other day, and they were talking about Io having so much volcanic activity - but the idiot on the show was mentioning all the reasons why it shouldn't be that way.. But never gave the actual reason WHY, made it sound like it was some kind of mystery.. Freaking 10 second google and had all the answers I needed

"The gravitational fields of Jupiter and its large moons Europa and Ganymede cause tidal bulges in the solid crust of Io that are as high as 100 meters (330 feet). As Io orbits the giant planet, the bulge moves, flexes the crust, and heats Io's interior like a paper clip bent rapidly back and forth."

There you go sc302, talk about taking a thread off topic ;) heheheh -- I managed to get us talking about a moon of Jupiter in a thread about searching for hidden files.

who said anything about only one thing, multiple things are good too. going to go beat myself in the corner, fight club style....you comin?

I had often wondered how a topic could deviate from discussing windows search to the moons of Jupiter.

Control folders is a new one on me. Personally, I just use a shell extension called "Hidden Files Toggle". Just right click on anything explorer related (file, folder, desktop, whatever) and turn on/off hidden files with a click.

I like this, I often hide/unhide my files.

It annoys me though; that MS took it out. I mean who's in charge there... Do they even use windows?

Indeed, not sure why they would remove that functionality.

If you want that particular one, I'm using Hidden Files Toggle from this page. Been using this on most different builds of Windows, server editions included. Can't comment on the others listed on that page, I don't use them.. the only one I'd possibly get is "CmdPromptHere", but I just do a quick registry hack for that one, no extension needed.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • I am not a fan of haptic feedback touchpads. I've owned a Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon) with one and a Lenovo Slim (Intel), and I hated both to the point where I purchased different laptops. It's not that they don't work most of the time; it's that they don't work 100% of the time, and there is no advantage from a user's perspective over a good mechanical trackpad like what's on a ThinkPad X1 or a Yoga 9i. I do not believe that I'll buy another haptic feedback touchpad laptop again in the near future.
    • Works fine here too. About this build, I don't like to download any kind of Windows, from any site except Microsoft. The mod might work, but I don't know what it's inside. Can contain malware, backdoors... Long time ago I've used something like this but reversed - it was 98se with the look and some functionality  of XP. Or, later XP with Vista look. But I made it myself. Not downloaded from obscure sites.
    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
