there is a way to remove the shortcut arrows.

i cant remember right now.

Just google Ultimate Windows Tweaker. Thats what I used and it has other options in in as well for anything from cleaning pagefile to removing shortcut arrows.

The option is grayed out on Win7 64-bit.

I'm somewhat skeptical about the tweaks around the intarwebz if they work properly on 64-bit.
