A lot of animals do the first thing (puffing up), but looking evil - hmmm, maybe it's doing a thing that some animals do - mimick a stronger, more aggressive creature? Maybe there's an eagle or something that looks similar to "evil owl"...

Inherrited knowledge? A lot of animals simply do what they do because their ancestors did it and it's kept the species alive. The first is based upon size, the second seems based upon mimicking a predator.
