Ubuntu 10.10 'Maverick Meerkat' Beta released.

So what's changed here? I heard something a while back about a unified menu bar, similar to OS X, is that included in this release?

In Netbook edition, yes.

I'd say the biggest change the general audience will realize is the new installer, which is unmatched imo, truly great work they've done with it.

I didn't realize that cod fish had names?!?!

Again?? What the **** is a "cod-name"??? At first, I simply thought you made a typo, but you keep calling it that.

That was driving me insane as I was reading his posts too. I'm glad someone mentioned it before I was forced to.

Back on-topic.

The latest release does seem to be shaping up nicely. I booted it up the other day and for the first time the splash screen was displayed in my native resolution!

each has it's own naming so if you don't like it then create a distro with the name you want or try one of the hundreds of distros available http://distrowatch.com/

Installed 10.10 today and im finding it to be pretty decent :) alot less buggy than the 10.04 beta. Infact everything has worked of the mark so far so no bugs.

The ambiance theme looks a bit differant have they modified it? either way i like it now. The new default wallpaper is horrible though that was changed quickly

What do people think of the new ubuntu font? I think its looking great but the terminal doesnt like using it, screws up the spacing.

Thanks :) Will it auto-update or is it best for a fresh-install? Am using Wubi.

Usually auto-update does the trick. On a few rare occasions it might break something and then you can just reinstall it. The main thing is 10.10 is still in testing, so anyone testing should reinstall it to test the LiveCD and installer.

Aw darn, I was hoping they'd implement it in the desktop edition.

I'm not sure, but I guess you could enable it in the desktop version. There's always Global Menu applet if you can't (the only upside of Ubuntu's official panel menu is that it works with Qt/KDE apps).

I am now using the RC. It's so cool. Nicer themes and fonts. Clean, cool look. I am using the Radiance theme, and it's been updated to look more monochromatic, and it works well aesthetically. There are some cool new desktop pics too.

Is it all about looks? If so, then that's fine, as things look good. But a lot of my programs were updated too. I guess it's too early for me to get beyond the smartness of the design to see how else it's improved, but I'm very happy! :D

I've been playing with both the Ubuntu and the Kubuntu RC and I like them both. I honestly like the KDE version a bit better at the moment, since it's so much like Windows 7. So far everything just works. And it look good too.

Since last verions and even with the RC of 10.10 I can't see my Sound Icon in the tray area. Supposedly it's improved in this version, I checked on apt and it's installed but there is no way I can access it. :s Like the new photo manager that replaced f-spot.

The KDE version is nice, but for some reason despite me enabling the 3rd party ATI drivers, it still won't allow 3D acceleration to be enabled, think there is some kind of bug in it. The Oxygen theme however is really nice

I've found several small annoyances with KDE. It looks nice but it's always been a bit flaky.

    • Limited Prime Day deal sees Amazon Echo Show 11 is at its lowest price yet by Ivan Jenic The Amazon Echo Show 11 is currently $149.99 on Amazon during Prime Day, down from $219.99. That's 32% off and $70 saved on Amazon's newest mid-size smart display (purchase link below). As its name suggests, the Echo Show 11 features a 11” Full-HD touchscreen, which is a decent upgrade over the Echo Show 8. It offers 60% more viewing area, which makes a genuine difference for recipes, calendars, video calls, or any other scenario where the smaller display can feel a bit cramped. The Show 11 is built around Alexa+, Amazon's more capable AI assistant that can handle natural conversation. You can make reservations, order groceries, and find content based on your preferences, instead of always having to give it precise commands. There’s also the Omnisense technology, which adds ambient awareness, allowing the device to trigger routines based on temperature, presence detection, or visual cues. Smart home control is built in without needing a separate hub, and the home screen doubles as a photo slideshow when not in use. Taking all of this into account, the Show 11 is a perfect smart addition to your kitchen counter or living room. At $149.99, this is a strong Prime Day buy for anyone already in the Amazon ecosystem or looking to build one out. • Dang that sucks. I just started using this feature instead of Pushbullet.
    • I use my devices until the very end. I used my old desktop computer for 16 years, my OnePlus 5T phone for 8 years and my LG Gram laptop for 7 years. Even though they are still working, there are no more security updates for most of them (Windows 7 ESU, Android 12 ROM and the LG Gram because I wanted an ARM based laptop).
