Hybrid Fibre Coaxial? if you are running on DOCSIS 3, You are on copper to the node, then its fiber.... just to get technical, its not FTTP (Fiber to the premisis) This, it's not really a fiber optic connection, but it's still nice, I have it too. More on topic though, TEX4S, I also have the TWC wideband service (the cheaper 30/5) one, and I'm curious where you live. I'm in Dallas and they only offer 30/5 for like $75 and 50/5 for $100. How are you getting these 90-200 mbps speeds? tsupersonic
Well, I can't wait for this tex. We have the turbo 15/1 package, which is the highest package they offer in our area, but nearby they rolled out the wideband service. I recently moved, so the cable tech said its coming soon, definitely getting it. TEX4S
What the hell are you gonna use that much bandwidth for ?? You know, the usual....web browsing and email  Fiber? Isn't this just HFC? Hybrid Fibre Coaxial? if you are running on DOCSIS 3, You are on copper to the node, then its fiber.... just to get technical, its not FTTP (Fiber to the premisis) Youre right, fiber goes to a box on the side of my house, each house now has one on my street. The house is not wired for fiber optics though. It is a coax cable inside the house to the modem, then I have some fat Cat-6 to the puter More on topic though, TEX4S, I also have the TWC wideband service (the cheaper 30/5) one, and I'm curious where you live. I'm in Dallas and they only offer 30/5 for like $75 and 50/5 for $100. How are you getting these 90-200 mbps speeds? Well, I signed up for the 50/5 - the tech told me since it is fiber all the way to the house that I wont suffer from the typical performance drops like most cable modem customers, and that they havent really "regulated" the top end of the wideband stuff. He said Road Runner Extreme (30/5) was seeing a true 30 Mbps connection, and they havent capped the 50/5 in these situations... So I guess I can take that as there will be a time when I am capped to what I pay for. $100 = 50/5 I am surrounded by fios areas. I am in Southlake. They call it Time Warner Total Home Digital or something ... Well, I can't wait for this tex. We have the turbo 15/1 package, which is the highest package they offer in our area, but nearby they rolled out the wideband service. I recently moved, so the cable tech said its coming soon, definitely getting it. Apparently, they are not saying a whole lot about it, but being aggressive @ getting any area where fios isnt - I dont think they [TWC & Verizon] consider AT&T U-verse to be a real threat since they suck so horribly bad. If a tech told you its coming, I would think its coming pretty quick - thats cool ! TEX4S
thats in Mb/sec  LOL - could you imagine ? It would be like having your own OC128 in your house - a full length DVD rip in less than 10 seconds  Its 4:00 am and these speed tests are pretty sparatic - and my DL speeds on STEAM are only about 2.5MB/sec - so I am a little concerned already Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936484-good-bye-att-dsl-hello-docsis-30-fiber/page/2/#findComment-593140290 Share on other sites
zivan56
Nice, but your ping is really high for fibre (20 ms). I get ~7 ms max on my building LAN <-> industry grade wireless over 2.4 GHz for about 2-3 km <-> ISP to a local speedtest.net server. Even a remote one (Seattle) is 12 ms. I guess the DOCSIS really adds a bit towards overhead... -Himanshu-
Lucky you. And we are so far behind. In my country, the best you will get is 24 Mbps and for that you have to pay $250 per month. treemonster
yeah on steam i can usually hit 3mb per game that's being downloaded, ie if i have 3 games downloaded they will all be between 2mbps and 3mbps. been that way since i had 7.5mbps broadband when hl2 was still relatively new. majortom1981
How are you getting 370 with only 5 up ? Docis s with fiber to the building ? That makes no sense. Most fiber to the building is the same download and upload. Time warner MUst really be screwing over the rest of its customers if they havent capped you to 50/5 speeds. Also i think the Speed test you are on is glitching out. No way they have THAT many channels bonded together. Since what time warner is doing compaired to say cablevision ###### has to be a glitched speed test. If yo uare trully uncapped you can bring the whole node down to its knees if you use your full bandwidth . IF thats the case haveing uncapped down/ 5 up but having barely any connection sometimes would stink.. Andre S. Veteran Posted September 14, 2010 Veteran Share Posted September 14, 2010 (edited) I don't care that much for speed, I mean when a server does saturate my 7mbps bandwidth, that's usually enough to get what I want in a reasonable amount of time. What I absolutely cannot stand is download limits. Here in Quebec, the best internet you can get is Bell Fibe 25, with 25Mbps download/ 7 Mbps, for about 60$ a month, which is not too horrible; however, you got a combined limit of 100GB per month. Do the math: you're limited to using your service at 100% for 6.9 hours a month. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936484-good-bye-att-dsl-hello-docsis-30-fiber/page/2/#findComment-593147194 Share on other sites

Yes Time Warner sucks (it took me 4 days to come to that realization) The Time Warner speed test shows the same speeds though. The same speeds that are flaky as hell ... I have been having some problems on and off again and have submitted 2 trouble tickets to the idiots in tech support. At least with AT&T DSL -- I felt their idiots have at least used a computer before. These Time Warner jack offs will flat out make crap up when they are stumped. I had 1 chick tell me that I was having speed problems because in Device Manager my adapter didnt say "Network adapter" it only read "Gigabit Ethernet Controller" Then when I told her she was an idiot she sounded like she was about to cry, which made me feel better - if I would have heard a gunshot over the phone - that would have made my day -=- true vindication ! xendrome
That speed test doesn't look accurate at all, DOCSIS 3 in Dallas Ft. Worth Area via Roadrunner, there is no way they are offering that kind of speed. http://www.timewarnercable.com/Dallas/learn/hso/wideband-internet/ the highest plan they offer is 50mbit, even with the Business class stuff, the only way you are going to get that kind of speed is on their Metro Ethernet, which is going to run you $1k plus a month. You sure that test is working right, I see you ran the TWC speed test as well which is showing way lower, but still high. I am guessing they are using some type of "turboboost" option for short less then 1-2 minute downloads. mrpinkfloyd
The $100 / month is just for internet, I have TV thru Dish Network, and dont have a land-line. Since I was paying $40/mo for 6.0Mbps DSL - its a bargain. Ive fixed the bad pings and more speedtests put it @ about 200Mbps. :D I broke down and called their "tech support" - almost comical. I seriously think my dog knows more than they do. Tier 2 was no better. God I hope I never have to talk to them again - it was mind-numbing You fixed the bad pings with this service? Please tell me how!! Here is my story with TWC DOCSIS 3.0 service: I've been using their Road Runner with turbo boost 18Mbps service for over 3 years with no problems at all, so when I found out about a faster service available in my area I'm thinking "juice me up!" So they install the Motorola Surfboard a week ago today and in that time period I have had 3 TWC techs out to my home to fix the ping problems and they have all been CLUELESS to put it politely. They all admitted to me that they had only setup 2 or 3 of these modems before and don't know what the problem is. In fact, the first installer had to pull wires out of the wall of my utility room and he couldn't get them back in the wall so he just left the house with a ball of wires hanging one foot out of my wall....that is not a joke or exaggeration. So the main problem I have had with their new 30/5 service is that it is WAY slower than the 18/2 service I had from them before. It takes over a minute to load a page and trying to browse with tabs makes loading times go to about 3-5 minutes. Even with these slow speeds, tests at speedtest.net show me getting anywhere from 14 to 26 Mbps down and 2 - 3 Mbps up. The really story is at pingtest.net where it shows that I'm getting a 92% packet loss!! When the clueless tech was at my home yesterday, he called his boss to tell him we were getting a 92% packet loss and his boss told him "that's not possible, because if he was getting a 92% packet loss he wouldn't be connected to the Internet." That's exactly my point, a hole!! Sure, the computer is connected to the Internet, but when it's taking over a minute to load a page like Google News, I don't feel like their wideband service is performing as advertised. And yes, calling tech support for TWC is about as fun as getting repeated kicked in the balls by someone wearing golf spikes. If anyone can offer me some advice to help fix these issues without having to rely on TWC, I would be very thankful!! Nagisan
Good download speed (if it is accurate) but why is your ping so high? I have to ping a server 900 miles away to get a ping that high (test in sig), if I ping one within 50 miles or so I get 20-30 ping with 2-3 jitter (according to pingtest.net). My advertised service is 16/2, the speeds below are my power boosted speeds, but still I pretty much get my max download speed (2 MB/s) after power boost as long as the server I'm downloading from allows it, so I'm happy. That being said, I really don't like TWC, they have decent internet, but the speed tiers sucked where I have lived in the past 3 years or so. Over in CA, I had the highest package they offered, which was 10/1, then over in SC I had the highest package they offered still, but it was only 10/0.5. What sucked is in SC, I could have moved down the street and gotten Comcast with 10/1 as a basic package, 15/2 for the same price as the one I was paying for TWCs 10/0.5.....its like they didn't care that they had competition in that area or something. TEX4S
That speed test doesn't look accurate at all, DOCSIS 3 in Dallas Ft. Worth Area via Roadrunner, there is no way they are offering that kind of speed. From what I have gathered in the past week - there are some areas where they dont have the 50Mb accounts capped - meaning they havent said "stop @ 50Mb/sec". Thats what I was told @ 1st... Now I am told they now have caps in place and I am really only getting 50Mb/sec. The speedtests like this: are bogus. Think of it like this: Imagine your pipeline to your ISP is constipated, and you run a speedtest to check out the limits - that quick stress all of a sudden breaks the constipation and it sh*ts out an incredible amount of "data" all at once. And this happens over and over again - the more it hovers around 10Mb/sec - the faster it will eventually spit out the junk at the end. You fixed the bad pings with this service? Please tell me how!! If anyone can offer me some advice to help fix these issues without having to rely on TWC, I would be very thankful!! Well - 2 ways - mentioned to their Tier 3 "specialists" about 50% packet loss and one of their servers was down resulting in a lot of re-direction (they claimed they didn't notice "that" one. Also, since their head office is in Flower Mound where my parents live, I figured the head honcho probably lives in their neighborhood... I was right. PM me and I will give you a contact email addy of someone who can possibly fix everything. (its not the head honcho but someone high up enough to yell @ their underlings and make stuff happen) Good download speed (if it is accurate) but why is your ping so high? ng. The only thing I can guess is they rerouted me away from a known bad hop which was resulting in a lot of packet loss. I do not know how any of this stuff works so I am making guesses. The pings went good after a week of complaining on and off. Now everything is normal - somewhat. I have since quit looking @ speedtest.net & Time Warner's version because they dont tell me anything relevant. I download a well-seeded torrent @ 6MB/sec - that tells me what I need to know.... I still hate TWC though. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936484-good-bye-att-dsl-hello-docsis-30-fiber/page/2/#findComment-593170028 Share on other sites

I agree with you on speed tests in general, with Power Boost and what not, a simple speed test is not a good representation of your speeds. I think Comcast and Time Warner use it so if someone complains about speed they can tell them to go to speedtest.net, do a speed test, and they will get the boosted speeds and Comcast/TWC can tell them their speeds are fine. The only thing speed tests are good for nowadays is showing off what ridiculously high numbers you can get from them......they similar to benchmarks to try to find your PC performance, good for e-peen, but they mean next to nothing in actual performance. :p I download a well-seeded torrent @ 6MB/sec - that tells me what I need to know.... I still hate TWC though. That is a much better test IMO, I get around 2MB/s sustained from a good torrent after the initial burst wears off, it of course varies both higher and lower, but it matches up with my advertised once I lose power boost. As for upload, I have no idea whats going on there, I pay for 2Mb/s (250 KB/s) but I have seen a sustained upload of 300-450KB/s, it doesn't stay there for a really long time, but longer than it should if it was due to power boost, I'm guessing it has to do a bit with network load in my area as well, but I seem to be able to consistently upload faster than my advertised speed. Not complaining, but its interesting. However at this point it won't be necessary because I've already "downgraded" back to my original TWC cable Internet service. That's where I will be until AT&T finally gets the U-Verse box installed in my neighborhood (sometime before the end of this year, from what they've told me). NoLiMiT06
I live in North Carolina and I have 10mbps/512kbps (highest offered) paying $60/month. The only options here is AT&T DSL (horrible I used to work for tech support) and Time Warner. Since TW has no competition here they have maxed out the speeds. If I lived in Wilson, NC they offer Greenlight which is all fiber and the speeds are awesome and so are the prices. I hate TW and AT&T just ridiculous.... KyleGM
I just upgraded mine as well, from BT Total Broadband, to their new fibre optic "BT Infinity" package. Before hand I was getting 6Mb/s download on a good day and 350KB/s upload, now I'm getting 32Mb/s download at peak, with it usually being around 20Mb/s during the day, and 8Mb/s upload! It makes a big difference! Also they told me my estimated connection would be around 21-22Mb/s so I'm very happy with it being 32! And ping is around 26ms :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/936484-good-bye-att-dsl-hello-docsis-30-fiber/page/2/#findComment-593182626 Share on other sites
