Preview of 64-bit version of Flash Player available

For those who wish to have the 64-bit IE as default try following these steps;

1. Close all Internet Explorer windows.

2. Rename the Internet Explorer in Program Files (x86) to anything (for example, Internet Explorer (x86)).

3. Copy the Internet Explorer folder from the Program Files folder to Program Files (x86)

4. Open Internet Explorer and re-pin it on the taskbar.

You cannot open the 32-bit IE after doing this unless you revert the changes made.

there is only a 64bit version of firefox 4 beta 1, there probably won't be any more until the final build which will be released AFTER the 32bit version.

Now we just need 64bit silverlight, 64bit quicktime, 64bit chrome and we're good to go:)

The nightly builds have a x64 version ;)

I can't get it to run in IE 9 (Chrome works fine).... maybe it's because I have both the IE9 and non-IE9 version installed.

Uninstall both the ActiveX control *and* the plug-in version before installing the preview version (per the notes on the "Square" page).

I installed the x64 ActiveX version (for IE 9 x64). For the first time ever, multiple tabs with Flash content aren't choppy! What I have to remember is to launch the x64 version of IE 9!

I still need to install the x64 Java runtime; however, once I do that, it's bad news for IE 9 x32 (and any other x32 Web browser in Windows), as I would need them *why*?

x64 Flash ActiveX control + x64 IE 9 + x64 Java = bad news for x32 IE 8

Why is it bad news? Flash x64 transition will take longer or just as long as deprecation of IE8 itself. I just don't get why everyone's so 'happy'. I work with Flex (Flash) but this will make absolutely no difference to any user, performance and especially stability.

On which side won't it make a difference?

On the client side, it already does (the chop problem I had with 32-bit Flash on 32-bit beta browsers, including IE 9, has been banished by moving to x64, as for some reason the x64 version does not have the choppiness problem with multiple tabs the x32 control does). That actually mirrors the earlier actions regarding the previous Linux x64 preview of the Flash player. In short, there is both a major performance difference and a major *stability* difference, and it's replicatable across multiple operating systems.

How in the world did you get that? If that were truely the case, the OSX and Linux version would not be shipping today.

Well the linux 64bit one has been in alpha for a hell of a long time. And the mac os x one is pretty recent too.

I could be wrong, but IE was the first 64bit browser. But instead of making a 64bit flash plugin when it was released, adobe went the same route as half the people who go "why would you need a 64bit browser / media player etc." That said, come on MS hurry up and release a 64bit Silverlight...

Well an IM program won't really benefit from x64 lol. But flash / silverlight / media programs, why not? Hell WMP 64bit is so much more responsive, and loads faster, than the 32bit version on both Vista / 7.

And hell if it forces people to upgrade to Windows x64, even better. Time to stop using old technologies.
