Skype 5.0 for Windows goes Gold

skype_logo.png

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing.

Ok so the Windows-Version of Skype has that all-in-one Video/Voice/Text-Windows? I HATE Skype on Mac because you got at least three windows open, when calling someone. Contact list, which is excusable, but then your Video/Voice-window and your Text-window and sometimes your transmission-windows... Aw how I hate that...

WLM for Mac does it the way I want it but the sound quality is just BAD... :(

ok installed it

they fixed the "home" pop-up on startup bug. but the tray icon is still there and "close window" on the superbar still doesn't work.

Yeah, the Skype folks think this is the 'desired' behavior of the program in Windows 7. It's kinda retarded though. To fix it, just click the Properties for the shortcut and on the Compatibility tab, run it with Compatibility for Windows Vista. Then it works normal and disappears when you close it.

Tools - Options - Advanced - Untick the 'Keep Skype in the taskbar while I'm signed in' check box.

no, that makes it behave even less standard.

the tray icon shouldn't exist. it should only be the superbar icon, which stays there persistently when the application is open, and clicking close window on the superbar icon's menu should exit the app instead of minimizing the window. (i.e. it should be the same way WLM behaves)

Heck... I remember the days when Skype only used about 13-20MB of RAM. Now it's using about 143MB on my system at the moment after a few hours of running o___o Kinda wish it'd slim at bit, it's not like there's been a terribly amount of feature additions =P

Skype has been since years back in the task bar, if you don't want it there any longer just hide it in the windows control panel.

Can't really see where the issue is here, as not everyone is used to how WLM is functioning..

you mean the tray icon?

even if you "hide" it it's still there, just in the collapsible pane. honestly that doesn't bother me nearly as much as the faulty window behaviour. if they think people would like how they're doing it, they should have options to enable the behaviour rather than blatantly disregarding OS standards and doing their own thing.

    • Looks like the 7.1 is fake effects, can it at least do real 5.1? It says 'virtual 7.1' in all descriptions.
    • You can't, if you didn't notice, it doesn't support surround at all, it's right in the spec list.
    • Hi — I’m always interested in soundcards. Like displays, I just want to know I’m getting as much clean “sonic juice” into my brain as possible as the years take their toll. I’m not entirely sure what to take away from this review, though. It doesn’t really tell me whether the AE‑X is a good product or who it’s actually for. Most of what I’m getting is: there’s a driver to install, here’s what it looks like, and here’s what’s in the box. There’s a lot of emphasis on the SPDIF input. When you mention not needing to switch headphones between console and PC — does that mean the PC has to be powered on just to pass audio through? That seems like a fairly big waste of energy. Is this more something a streamer would use alongside a capture card? How are you testing the sound? (Also, you might want to clarify that you’re using the headphones in wired mode when you mention they’re wireless.) You mention the lack of EMI shielding — how much real‑world difference does that make compared with typical motherboard audio? On multi‑channel: what exactly isn’t supported? Does this mean Windows spatial audio (Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X, etc.) won’t work, or just that the card itself doesn’t decode surround formats? And are there any true multi‑driver “surround” headphones left that would even use that? You also highlight support for high‑impedance headphones — but what does that translate to in practice? How does it compare to driving the same headphones from a normal device, and does it make any difference for everyday, lower‑impedance models? In short, who is this card actually targeted at?
    • Yes, THIS is wordart, not the styling that can now be done. Wordart was all about those curvy words, that you could change the path of, like making words go around a circle. I don't think it can be done now, right?
    • Just saw a news report of a Waymo driving into a flooded road.
