Your thoughts on WP7 Tiles/App List

Recommended Posts

If you own and have spent time with a WP7 device, how do the Tiles/AppList work for finding and opening apps. It's really the main thing that I have issues with in WP7 which I want to be my next device (But on Verizon and just got a Droid X recently).

I like the idea of tiles and I think the main Live Tile section is best for the majority of the time, but if I want an app that isnt on my front page, then I need to go to the alphabetical list which could get messy if you are an app person. What are your thoughts as a user? Do you miss the Android/iOS way of doing it?

For example if you needed to quickly open the calculator to do a quick math problem, is it too much "work" for that simple task?

Well opening a calculator is easy consider it's probably always on the first screen when you swipe to the right anyway, but other than it's not too hard to know where you're going. It is after all an alphabetical list, so there is an order to it so you have an idea of where to expect to find your program. Would I prefer to have folders and a customisable order in the list? Heck yes, but it's definitely serviceable the way it is and it's not too much hassle. It's not perfect, but it works without much issue (:

I'd actually prefer if the Tiles on the start screen were actually all high res artwork or icons instead of mostly flat coloured tiles, as it adds a little bit more personality to your phone, but I'll live :p <img>

There is a point to the flat tiles though. When you get on any device, what do you want to do? Accomplish your task right? Well, these tiles mean that the OS gets out of your way and lets you do what you want to do. Flashy and fancy graphics, bright colors, and things like that distract from the point of what you want to do.

Conversely, I think artwork would actually make it easier to find what you're looking for, than tiles that all look relativly the same, using the same background and colour and foreground colour for simple 2 toned tiles. It's far easier to distinguish a wholly unique full bleed, full coloured google artwork icon on my homescreen, than just an icon that looks just like everything else.

I really enjoy it. The active tiles are pure win. The alphabetical list could use some work, perhaps they can sort it like the contact list where you can hold a and get the alphabet to shoot to the list you want to find or allow you to sort by most used or setup panels. I'm sure we'll see some enhancements here but right now i just uninstall what i don't use and pin to tiles my main stuff and i absolutely love it.

They probably are going to do it that way (if they were smart...and with the design so far they have been) but you don't have to hold "a", you can just tap it. :D
