Certainly not an app of which I'd have expected a Mac port...

It's quite funny how an app called WinZip is now on the Mac. :p

like what? i have Unarchiver and it's extremely limited. Can you suggest something else?

I think Chasethebase got my idea, even though I didn't explain it too well. My point was more to do with WinZip entering the Mac market when there are other compression programs already available for Mac (see the top of this list for some examples). It just seems a bit unnecessary, although that could just be me.

WTF is .zipx? :s

Did WinZip just create a new zip format incompatible with the market? Is it even an open format?

Rucksack has been perfect for me.

Yup, that one's nice if you need anything beyond the built-in zip support, like if you want to compress to 7-zip.

I don't understand why you need a zip program in the Mac when OS X support and create zip files. Much less paying $30 dollars for it.

It isnt really creating zip files now but more for RAR files and other compression formats.

Yeah I got a free license for that a while back. Works beautifully.

My guess is that WinZip is loosing market. But whoa, I never expected a Mac version. Sure takes me back!

I have to give it to them though, it does seem like a fine Mac OS X application. It has a native interface and very nice icons. (Y) It looks a whole of a lot better than the Windows version which carries that insane Ribbon.

nice, but these days almost everything web is RAR compressed.

Edit: it opens RAR :)

So does the built-in archive utility on OS X, as well as the Unarchiver replacement app.

...

Maybe they went the Microsoft route, and changed the format to be XML compressed in a ZIP file

I found something annoying about this application. With multiple or "unsafe" files It doesn't seem like you can just double click an archive and it will start unzipping. It will open the main window and you have to extract it manually. That's pretty annoying compared to Rucksack and the build-in unarchiver.

Since when exactly?

UnRarX FTW! That's what I use... I don't need anything more. .zip are opened through Leopard and .rar through UnRarX. If I need to unpack some 7z-crap... well I just don't do that because that never happens.

Rucksack is great, too, though. I just don't need it. Let alone WinZip Mac.

I'm using it, actually, despite my ancient hate for WinZip for, well, Windows. It beats the Unarchiver in a great way since you can open an archive and look at the files in it, rather than just extracting it somewhere. It was one of the few things I've really disliked with the Macs...

Anyway, WinZip Mac (I have to agree that does sound retarded) not supporting a simple double click and unzip is a huge deal breaker for me. That and the price of course. But let's just say I wouldn't even use it if I could get it for free because of this flaw. ;)

I'm getting all nostalgic just looking at the icon!

I'm remembering the first time I heard of WinZip. I got something from a friend that was zipped, and back when I was eleven or so I had no idea what to do with it. So he had to brought over a copy of WinZip on a floppy.

My main issue win UnRarX is is the lack of updates and the fact it's extremely slow at decompressing compared to Rucksack and WinZip Mac.

There's a way of fixing this. Do a "show package contents" and navigate to the resources folder.

Then , copy in the new versions of the RAR mac CLI form winrar's website.

MAGIC ;)

    • Less powerful than a PS5 at twice the price! I wonder if they use that for marketing? Totally DoA.

    • How does it compare to the "SeeStar S30 Pro" and the "Vespera PRO 2"?
    • Indeed. And note that those units are MUCH cheaper than this new Steam Machine...ahem.
