Microsoft investigates 'phantom' Windows Phone 7 data

Recommended Posts

I looked, and couldn't find any other topics about this

https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/965416-serious-transmission-bug-discovered-in-wp7/

Sorry if this kind of thing spoils your Microsoft love in, but it is real news.

And like plenty of other people have mentioned its most likely an app. On another site only people that used yahoo mail syncing seemed to encounter this problem.

If this was an OS problem don't you think everyone else who uses WP7 would be seeing the same issue?

---

I honestly can't tell you how much data my HD7 uses since I'm on T-mobile's unlimited plan and they don't show much data I'm using up (Just says 0 / Unlimited). But I do have almost everything turned on (People's synced with facebook and WL, email set to as items arrive, phone updates on, feedback on, weather on etc).

Hard to say what the cause could be, ut if Microsoft are investigating it, that means that it's an issue

Errr no it doesn't, it means they are investigating IF there is an issue, or just idiot users trying to scam a buck.

AT&T Windows Phone 7 devices come loaded with AT&T FamilyMap, AT&T myWireless, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Radio, and AT&T U-verse Mobile :p Whether any of those apps update in the background I have no idea, never seen them in action. Butt so far all the reports seem to be from AT&T users

<img>

These apps can be uninstalled - I only kep Navigator (never used it) and myWireless. I also uninstalled all of Samsung's pre-installed apps (i have a Focus). My data usage stays below 200MB which is what I pay for in terms of a data plan. It probably is a couple of apps doing this to people.

Notes:

- I have 3 direct push email accounts setup all with push email activated.

- I have FB accounts activated along with windows live, xbox live, etc.

- I browse a lot, and use several other apps regularly including music.

The Wifi does disconnect whenever your screen shuts off but I think that's just a power saving feature built into the phone.

Nobody questioned whether it was real news or not, just why it is being reposted ;) Besides that , it's difficult to understand why the BBC would waste their time reporting on an issue that only effects users on a single American mobile network.

When the bug with Android's SMS application cropped up you guys where all over it like Android was the worst thing ever, and that was also a bug that only affected a small amount of users as well, so i'd say you are a hypocrite, still I should have known the reaction posting something critical of Microsoft would bring on this forum.

And to be frank, I don't give a flying <insert clever phrase or word here> what you think of my reasons for posting this topic, it's a valid news item and if you don't like it you are more than welcome to not read the topic.

There's a difference? You see while both these bugs affected a small number of users...the android one was because of the OS itself, and this one seems to be because of an app (or yahoo mail).

If I download an app that sends out a bunch of pictures every 2 seconds and uses up a **** ton of data (random example), it's not Microsoft's fault is it?

But this was't because of the OS, it was because of a bug in the defaut Android SMS app. It didn't affect the SMS apps that come with sense, touchwiz, ETC nor did it affect third party SMS apps like Handcent. The default SMS app may be bundled with Android, but it was NOT a bug in the OS. Try educating yourself next time.

Oh I'm sorry, you see I consider the default SMS app to be part of the OS...because you see IT SHIPS WITH THE OS and it's a MAJOR part of a phone. If my HD7 didn't send text messages correctly, I would consider it a WP7 issue..not a "default SMS application that is bundled with WP7 issue".

No need to get your panties in a bunch over it.

I think you need to calm down. I also think you ought to think before calling me a hypocrite because (as far as I can remember) I've never posted in this forum about Android and never even read a single Android thread. I have no idea what SMS bug you're talking about but by the sounds of things you posted this story to get a bit of revenge.

So what you're saying is that is was a big in the OS SMS app. and you needed a third party app to not have the bug. got ya.

In my opinion? Stocks & Investors.

Doesn't make any difference, the sms application is not part of the core os functionality, and it doesn't happen to all SMS sent from android phones therefore it is not an is bug.

I really don't care what you think my reasons are, like I said if you don't like it, don't read it.

Ok then, I'll apply the same logic to this news then

Doesn't make any difference, the application (in question) is not part of the core OS functionality, and it doesn't happen to all users of WP7 phones therefore it is not an OS bug.

There we go. Good to see we're on the same page.

---

Now back to reality, too bad the SMS application IS part of the OS functionality...I don't care what you think but SMS is a basic part of a phone, and hence becomes an integral part of the OS. Just because using an app can avoid the bug doesn't mean its no longer an OS bug.

Now if this "bug" was because of the feedback option (as some users think) it's an OS issue since the feedback is built into the OS. If it's because of yahoo mail syncing then it really depends on whether Yahoo servers are talking too much to the phone (or whether the yahoo mail sync implementation within WP7 is flawed). If it was because of a third party app, then its no longer an OS issue.

So going by your logic then, it's fair to say that everytime a bug crops up in IE, or Safari it's the fault of Windows or OSX, just because they are bundled with the OS?

no, more accurately a bug in the net messenger however.

First define "core os functionality"

Looks like I am one of the affected people. Samsung Focus on AT&T since when the phone was launched in mid-Nov (start of spike).

I am not using Yahoo mail, Feedback is enabled but use of mobile data for it is disabled.

I do see some huge chunks of data transfer in my bill.

Did anything change for you between those two months? More gaming and apps that update often? It's hard to see what's going on if you don't have a more detailed log I guess.

I can think of podcasts streaming as one of the culprits but I used to do that on my iPhone as well. I download updates mostly when I am at home/work and it should be using wifi for that :/. I see some chunks of 175MB in the bill and it might be streaming?

This is my total data billing during last month's cycle

Unfortunately looking at the reports, even if 3G is off, the data waits until 3G turns back on to be sent, so it won't help anything :[

That doesn't make any sense at all. Not saying it doesn't happen but if I'm sure it continues on with wifi.

Anyways, I think using this feature would help alot, I know it has for me. I just used almost all my 200 MB for this month but I turned off 3G and just used wifi as much as possible. I'll use my 3G here and there when I'm looking for directions but then I turn it off once I get my info. Hopefully the issue will be solved for everyone's sake and sorry to hear that it's going on. I would just say, to be safe, turn off 3G unless you really need it.

    • I don't hate the new menus, I am not a fan of the lack of features and how they went live when they clearly are not complete. The menu itself presents much better than the previous - but what's lacking (IMO) is: 1) Any kind of automated manipulation such as: "this goes on the new menu because you use this feature more often on this filetype" "this is rarely used and will fall back to the old menu" 2) Any kind of user manipulation such as: "a UI to add/remove/order items to the new menu"
    • The biggest issue in this version of Win 11 context menu, from usability standpoint, is the movable row with basic commands. Think of a car analogy...if You turn the week left the infotainment screen will move right and vice versa. With how it works now Microsoft made something forbidden in designing in any UI, software or hardware. I can't grasp who were the morons within Microsoft suggesting it was a good idea and gave it a green light.

Charts and analysis tools help bring transparency to your conclusions. A fully-integrated help system makes easier work of entering complex formulas. Add data from external databases such as SQL or Oracle, then sort and filter them to produce statistical analyses. Use the graphing functions to display large number of 2D and 3D graphics from 13 categories, including line, area, bar, pie, X-Y, and net - with the dozens of variations available, you're sure to find one that suits your project. Impress is the fastest and easiest way to create effective multimedia presentations. Stunning animation and sensational special effects help you convince your audience. Create presentations that look even more professional than the standard presentations you commonly see at work. Get your collegues' and bosses' attention by creating something a little bit different. Draw lets you build diagrams and sketches from scratch. A picture is worth a thousand words, so why not try something simple with box and line diagrams? Or else go further and easily build dynamic 3D illustrations and special effects. It's as simple or as powerful as you want it to be. Base is the database front-end of the LibreOffice suite. With Base, you can seamlessly integrate into your existing database structures. Based on imported and linked tables and queries from MySQL, PostgreSQL or Microsoft Access and many other data sources, you can build powerful databases containing forms, reports, views and queries. Full integration is possible with the in-built HSQL database. Math is a simple equation editor that lets you lay-out and display your mathematical, chemical, electrical or scientific equations quickly in standard written notation. Even the most-complex calculations can be understandable when displayed correctly. E=mc2. • Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi system 2-pack is 27% off by Ivan Jenic The Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi system is currently $239.99 on Amazon for the 2-pack, down from $329.99. That's 27% off and $90 saved for a solid Wi-Fi solution that covers your entire home (purchase link down below). The 2-pack covers up to 4,000 square feet (372 square meters) and supports 100+ connected devices, which handles the vast majority of home setups without breaking a sweat. Wi-Fi 6E brings access to the 6 GHz band for lower latency across the network, and the 2.5 Gb Ethernet port supports gigabit+ internet plans if your ISP offers them. eero's TrueMesh technology handles traffic routing automatically, so you're not manually managing which devices connect to which node. You set up the entire thing through the eero app, and the entire process takes a few minutes. The system also receives automatic security updates in the background, so once you set it up, you don't have to worry about compatibility issues. If you're covering a larger home or want more nodes, the 3-pack is $329.99 and the 4-pack is $479.98, both at similar discount levels. It's worth mentioning that a newer model exists, which is likely the reason for the discount, but the Pro 6E is still perfectly capable hardware for most homes.
