*[NEW DISCOVERY]* My friend's computer has Windows 7 SP3?

Recommended Posts

With the full CS suite on his desktop, I'm guessing it's not legit to begin with.

So, I have the full CS suite on my desktop, does that mean I don't have a legit version of Windows

Anyway, the OP question has been answered, the CSDVersion key shouldn't exist.

My friend has already removed the value from the CSDVersion Key as told, but he still cant upgrade to SP1. "A more recent version of windows 7 service pack 1 is already installed". Any idea on this?

Delete the CSDVersion key (it isn't needed), restart your computer and then try that again. If it still doesn't work try to take a screenshot of all your installed updates (Go to control panel -> remove programs -> view installed updates)

Hm well you don't have SP1 installed so... honestly, I don't know what could be causing it. I would say either clean install your Windows again (don't use the HP one or a recovery disk, use a proper Windows 7 disk) or just wait till SP1 is officially released.

The only other place where Windows version information is stored afaik is the kernel, and that's hardcoded in. So either you have an update installed that's interfering with the SP1 installation (though you should get an error code in that case instead of a "newer version") or something else is messing with your system.

Is Windows still reporting itself as Service Pack 3 btw (check winver)?

Yes, Windows is still reporting itself as SP3.

Yes, Windows is still reporting itself as SP3.

Hm that's odd :/ And honestly I have no idea.

Try running sfc /scannow , and if it finds any corrupted files it will revert them to the original (you will need your Win7 disk, and I suggest you use an official for it..jic for some god knows what reason the HP disk is screwed up).

If that doesn't work the only thing you can do, if it's bugging you that much, is clean install (yet again official disk, the OEM key will still work).

If you don't have an official disk, I'm sure you know where to find them...just make sure the .iso checksums match:

32-bit

there is no service pack 3, We don't even have SP1 yet. go figure.

That's what Ballmer wants you to think! Like for instance: Windows XP SP4 ;)

muahahahaha

On topic:

A fresh re-install of Windows would be my recommendation as the others have mentioned.

it doesn't require the disk for win7

that is XP would prompt you for the disk

Well the HP disk is not screwed up coz the computer was preloaded with Home Premium and upgraded to Ultimate using Windows Anytime Upgrade. So it cud haf been a WUA error.

Would a repair installation work, since it removes the updates and repair the system files. In this way i would not lose my data

you don't have to format to reinstall Windows

when you custom install , windows would keep your data at Windows.old

FYI

It cant be pirated since he bought this PC from HP Singapore directly and up till now WGA hasnt alerted him yet. So it must have been a bug.

o it cant be pirated since he bought it from a shop.

obviously shops dont do pirate copies "doh"

what sort of logic is that

get a grip

Are you speaking for every single shop in the World? Would you be willing to say that there are no shops in China that sell pirated DVDs? How would an operating system be magically different to that? Indeed, all you need to do is look at this article here: Ballmer: 9 out of 10 copies of Windows in China are pirated.

Are you telling me that 9/10 people in china pirate the software themselves? Of course not, there are stores that are willing to offer the software to the customers, just like there are DVD stores willing to offer pirated DVDs.

Now, I'm not saying that his software is definitely pirated. But to believe that there aren't shops that will put pirated software on your computer is just silly.

EDIT: Although I do agree that you wouldn't expect HP to go passing around pirated software.

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
