LibreOffice 3.3.0 (fork of OpenOffice.org) final released

For most people OOo has more than enough functionality, and while it is a bit ugly its perfectly functional. I love office 2010, and I don't think anyone argues that openoffice is better than ms office, but the fact is openoffice is free.

Wow, this is so horribly fugly. I don't know if there are patent issues with implementing the Ribbon. But I remember a couple of years back there was a Project Renaissance which decided to change the OpenOffice UI to a Ribbon-esque layout. Whatever happened to that idea?

It's kind of strange because Office had the same ui until 2007 and nobody here tought it was ugly 3 years ago.

Not everybody like the ribbon. My sister hate it. She asked me to remove Office 2010 home from her computer and re-install office 2003.

OO ui needs some work. But it's not as bas as ms fans say it is.

you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that will actually call previous Office UI's nice, even back then, it was utilitarian but not good or nice.

The "problem" with the Ribbon (and anything else new) is that it still has to be learned. It doesn't just magically make everything better and more efficient with no investment. That's what most of the complaints really boil down to. You need to invest time and money in retraining people who are already proficient in the previous interface. You might see some return in the long run, but there is a need for large immediate investment that can be difficult to defend.

This is the case with every new interface. Good or bad. People get used to ui. Even the bad ones. Fans and haters never get past different ui. It's not like the program they love (literally) so it's bad.

I kinda like the ribbon in Office. After all it's almost the same thing as that context based toolbar in Photoshop.

But i must admit i hate it in small application like Paint. It's simply overkill to have a big *** ribbon filled with less than 10 possible actions. I'm happy they kept the ribbon out of MSN ... it would simply just not work.

I'm not sure if a ribbon based ui would work for ide though. Menus might be outdated but an app like Notepad++ has so much features it would be hard to completely removes it and anyway programmers use keyboard shorcuts ;)

You mean that piece of software that I and many other people have absolutely no use for?

You do, it's just that you have never explored it. ANYONE can be hugely benefited from using OneNote 2010. It's incredibly powerful and feature-rich. It's range of usage is only limited by your imagination. And once you find out how useful it is there is no going back.

You would make a good salesman for MS.

Have you tried OneNote 2010? There's very little that it cannot do. I use it from storing recorded class lectures to learning programming languages to solving Integrals to maintaining a to-do list to storing all my accounts information and what not. It's highly recommended to anyone who uses a computer.

OK, I agree KDE is a nice desktop environment, although it's no where near the level of Windows 7. But I was thinking more in the line of individual software like OpenOffice, GIMP, NetBeans, Eclipse, Firefox for Linux, Inkscape, Pidgin, VLC Player -- all of them have so fugly and unproductive UI, especially compared to the proprietary alternatives like Office 2010, Photoshop CS5, Visual Studio 2010, IE9 on Windows 7, Illustrator, WMP12, WLM 2011 etc.

Eclipse UI is okay the way it is.

MPC UI might be bad. But it is are far better video player than WMP.

fixed it. if you just want to watch some damn movies, WMP is a far better client, if you think you get better picture by tweakign weird settigns here and there, MPC is better, thogh I by far prefer many other alternatives like Splayer and Mplayer. or the old KMplayer.

Do you keep your laminated printout of Bill Gates in there too?

Exactly. I use OneNote on Windows Phone 7 to make notes as text, audio and pictures at uni and then sync them to the cloud to use on the desktop version.

Sounds like a solution for a problem I don't have, but if it's a life solver for you then congrats.

OneNote is really aimed at students, I get the feeling that this is the reason why most people feel that it's a pointless appliction.

TBH people can use the customise button when setting up office and choose NOT to install it, so it's not an issue to include it with office.

Exactly what I was thinking. It sounds like a "jack of all trades" app, the way WindowsFanatic describes it, and we all know the bad thing about those, right?

Probably why I have no use for it. If I need to write a note for myself on the computer, I'll simply do it in Notepad.

I think you should actually try it before you say something about something you apparently don't have a clue.

yeah it's a jack of all trades, it also happens to be better at everything it does than any other app that only does one of the things it does.

I seriously think that you also do not have a clue by the tone of most of your arguments, you seem to think that everyone must think along the same lines that you teeter on! That you think it is better than [sic] "any other app" is your opinion and not always what other people may think!

This thread is about LibreOffice and not MS products! How wonderful these products are, are actually not the topic of conversation or discussion!

Maybe you should focus on the issue we're actually discussing, and not try to turn this to some personal attack.

and no it's not just my opinion, in this case it just happens to be fact. and for a lot of people who need good notetaking libreOffice isn't offerign anything remotely close to Onenote. It's designed for students, especially if you also use the collaborative functions. but also for anything doing any form of research, big or small, or anyone writing a book for example and needing to write down notes and idea in an organized fashion, it's an app with no competition, and that's just the top of the pile.

so for anyone who even nas just the slightest need of takign notes and could use organizing just a little, MS office is worth the price of free right there, even if you take the ribbon entirely out of the equation.

And actually threads are not static things, they change, just like a discussion changes, yes, there's a topic we should stick to, but if we where to only follow that rule and not let the thread discuss other related thigns, the only posts would be "downloading now" and " finally". as those are the only posts that would your strict adherence to on topic.

Now I didn't see you adding anything to this conversation either, except for a personal attack and telling people they're not saying good things about your all time favorite app you haven't added anything on topic so. maybe follow your own advice to.

You are taking it personally, I was stating a "fact" that is all! I also said nothing at all about LO being my "all time favorite app", where did I say that? Are you trying a reentry here? Sorry not working! I can definitely say that for most people LibreOffice will do the job as well as any other application on the market and to boot it is free!

I think you should actually try it before you say something about something you apparently don't have a clue.

I have tried it (well, 2007 not 2010), and I still find no actual use for it in my daily routine.

I have to admit that 2010 is much better than 2007. That said, I use 2010 at work and I use LibreOffice at home and I can do what I want on either one of them. I prefer LibreOffice but I can use MS Office just fine if I need to get something done.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
