Henry Cavill to Play Superman

Recommended Posts

Learning earlier today that Dances With Wolves actor Kevin Costner was being considered for a role in Zack Snyder's Superman Reboot, the good folks over at Latino Review is claiming they know the role Costner is keen on tackling.

Now Kellvin [site founder] has spoken to his well-placed sources and we can report that Kevin Costner is none other than the Daddy of Superman himself: Jonathan "Pa" Kent.

Including Martha "Ma" Kent, "Pa" is the adoptive parent of Superman. In most versions of Superman's origin story, Jonathan and Martha were the first to come across the rocket that brought the infant Kal-El to Earth, with their adopting him shortly thereafter, renaming him Clark Kent; "Clark" being Martha's maiden.

Anyhow, with Henry Cavill set to lead, and rumors of the female villainess Ursa making an appearance still active, Zack Snyder directs Superman into theaters Mid-December next year!

They better not have Lex Luthor as a villain like every other Superman movie.

I have no problem with him being in the movie, in fact it feels weird without him in the methos (like the last 2 seasons of Smallville) I agree he shouldnt be a main focus, but he should definitely play a role regardless....I know that Superman III isnt the best example, but it felt so awkward watching a Superman movie without Lex (Not even Hackman couldn't have saved that trainwreck, Chris Reeve even said SIII was a joke)

I'm just tired of seeing him. Superman has more interesting villains to fight. Not that Lex is a bad character, he's just been done to death in the movies.

I'm tired of seeing him done wrong...Smallville, and Superman The Animated Series (even Lex from Lois and Clark, but to a lesser degree), IMO nailed the Lex character. No camp, all intimidating rich businessman, whos hell bent on his own agendas....Hackman and Spacey just didnt feel like a real Lex, nor a real foe for Superman, and had terrible taste in real estate.

Not to mention they always have lame plans in the movies and never really offer much of a fight. You never really see Superman pushed except for when they inexplicably hold back his powers to create tension, e.g. being about to fly several times the speed of sound in one scene then suddenly having difficulty catching up with a subsonic projectile in another. I see better action in the cartoons than I do in the movies.

Citing sources of The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that supporting cast for Zack Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel are coming along greatly. With the relatively unknown Henry Cavill leading the reboot, the site states verbatim:
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are zeroing in on an intriguing actor to play the villain: Viggo Mortensen. Hes said to be at the top of the list to play General Zod, the evil and super-powered scientist first introduced not in the comic books but in 1980's Superman II.

Viggo Mortensen, notably known as 'Aragorn' of the Lord Of The Rings franchise, is still in negotiations for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. THR further states that Mortensen is just a "person of interest," much like Kevin Costner for Jonathan "Pa" Kent. However, both actors are at the top list.

With this report, we can assume that the rumor of the villainess Ursa making an appearance, may be legit, having common villains with the original Superman film & it's sequel.

Oh god... that movie was abysmal.

They just started making up powers... and having him talk about playing that game

on his home world?? Newborns was awesome on his planet, I guess. ARG!!!!

The Richard Donner cut was a lot better, even if the editing was a bit rough on it with CGI replacement shots and takes that never made it into the original.

Though there's still plenty of casting rumors flying around, we now have our second official casting, after Henry Cavill's Man of Steel. Diane Lane has now been officially cast as Martha Kent, and Zack Snyder offered this comment:

"This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

Super powered Clark Kent has travelled the world for years as a journalist trying to find his place in the world. Arriving in Metropolis, he realises his place and potential as the world's greatest hero: Superman. An immediate hero, he soon comes across the path of Lex Luthor, a business mogul who owns almost all of Metropolis through corrupt and illegal methods with the help of crime syndicate Intergang. Their battle is soon disrupted by the dramatic appearance of an alien ship and Brainiac, a rogue alien super computer who has come in search of an all powerful crystal. He recognises Superman as the owner of the crystal revealing his origin as an alien and holds the world to ransom in exchange for the crystal. Superman must find the strength to defeat Brainiac by using the full extent of his powers, will and hope for humanity and discover his true origins to become the greatest hero of them all.

The latter part of that sounds a lot like a 2-part story in Superman: The Animated Series. In that arc Superman and Luthor have to set aside their differences and team up to defeat Brainiac. THAT could make for an interesting story.....

OTOH all indications are that General Zod and Ursa will be in this film, so either they get involved in the anti-Brainiac team or they are on the same side - which would be brutal.

Deadline is reporting that Kevin Costner is confirmed as Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel -- all we're waiting for is the press release.

"Almost a month after Deadline told you that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adopted father of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother," offers the report."

Of course speculation will intensify over which villain(s) will be utilized and what actors will play them. Deadline rules out the rumored Viggo Mortensen as Zod given his expected signing on to Snow White and the Huntsman, which will star Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.

A lot of poeple on the IMDB and Deadline forums upset that another American Superhero[superman was co-created by a Canadian] role was given to a Brit. Batman and Spider-man are British.

Well, we've had an American (Costner) and Australian (Crowe) play Robin Hood, but you don't see us complaining ;) There are many similar examples. Seriously, what does it matter. I for one would have preferred Tom Welling, after all he's the modern day Superman for most of us.

I'm just tired of seeing him. Superman has more interesting villains to fight. Not that Lex is a bad character, he's just been done to death in the movies.

Agreed. Darkseid is a far better antagonist.

The Hackman and Spacey portrayals were more like caricatures than the devious and cunning mastermind that Lex is. As you said, Smallville managed to pull it off without the campyness.

Superman exist without Lios Lane. He could easily be swapped for another damsel in distress... A Lana Lang perhaps.

I like that idea. Similar to smallville.

Official Warner Brothers press release -

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, the father who raised Clark Kent as his own son, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, ?Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.?

Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film?s star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Costner most recently starred in 2010?s ?The Company Men,? and is currently in development on the comedy ?The One.? He has won two Academy Awards?, for producing and directing the epic ?Dances with Wolves,? also garnering a nomination for Best Actor. He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including ?The Untouchables,? ?No Way Out,? ?Bull Durham,? ?Field of Dreams,? ?JFK,? ?The Bodyguard,? ?Wyatt Earp,? ?Tin Cup? and ?Swing Vote,? to name a few.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Lois Lane has been cast, and it was someone not on the list Warner discussed earlier -

Lois Lane: 3-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams

LA Times....

?There was a big, giant search for Lois,? Snyder said. ?For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.?

Snyder declined to discuss the precise prominence of Lois in the story or any plot details about the film but he said the role is ?a linchpin? to the project and that he considers it essential that Lois ? an FDR-era creation ? arrives on screen in 2012 with contemporary appeal and spirit.

?It goes back to what I?ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What?s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today?s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].?

    • Honestly that feels even more useless than it did when Win11 was first released. In 2021, the uproar was somewhat justified, but only when comparing how good we've had it since Windows 7. Prior to that, a new Windows release would often require new, or very recent hardware. Windows XP wouldn't run (in any usable way) on hardware released when it's predecessor Win98 was released (let's ignore ME). It was time to shift the goal post, and the way Microsoft did that was actually ok. People have still had another FIVE YEARS of free software support with Windows 10, and those of us who want to have used these tools to bypass the limitations, all while understanding the impacts that may have. Most laptops don't last 5 years (sadly), so now the youngest unsupported hardware is 9 years old, and apparently has another year of support with Windows 10. That's good. Meanwhile, understanding the impacts and limitations, I have my 2013 laptop running Win11 perfectly fine. The thing that's failing on it is the hardware, the 2.5" SATA cable/chip is failing and corrupting the SSDs I put in. Thankfully it has a functional M.2 sata drive that works fine!
    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
