Sony: Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention and Piracy

Recommended Posts

Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

What this means to you

Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

Did I miss how they are going to do this? Ban the username or ban by Console/MAC Address?

Good for Sony, but how are they going to do it..

I gather MAC address?

I don't believe the law suits and nonsense are way to go but banning the consoles from online use is sufficient. Wonder why they never kicked up such a fuss with ps2 hacks like xploder and stuff...was interesting back in the day messing with socom 2 with it lol.

It is mac address bans usually yeah

To me, this says "If your console isn't connected to the internet, we can't stop you doing anything to your system".

To be fair, I can see both sides of the argument. It's nice to have an "Open PS3" for those who can really produce some amazing homebrew apps but the PSN is a privilege service and not a right to all customers, if you want to use it play by their rules.

This. If you want to mod your system and hack it, pirate games whatever. Do it offline, don't bring it online and ruin the experience for everyone. Play by the rules or GTFO

so far as I am concerned I think that they should ban anyone that has modified their device. Yes you should be able to modify your device. however, when your modifications make normal online play for other people next to impossible (MW2) then you should be banned. Even if you are not using it for that purpose you should not be given access to the option to do these things.

I somewhat agree that modified consoles should be "offline only", but that also means Sony should back off people who do want to hack their PS3.

I know that people cheating online is a shame but it just shows that companies like Activision are LAZY and didn't implement proper checks on their servers. There's no way these cheats should go undetected by the server

Think why, then answer. :shiftyninja:, matter of fact i'm out of this, sick of these dicussions.

And this is EXACTLY what MS does to people who mod their consoles. I should know, as I had a modded console. They ban the console from connecting to their online service, be it Live or PSN, but the console still works offline. It is the risk you take when you mod your console. Get caught, and you can no longer go online.

Why people are up in arms over this is literally beyond my comprehension.

Yep, this post pretty much sums it up. (Y) I took the risk with a modded 360 a few years ago, it got banned after a month, so I had to buy a new one, and I've steered clear of modded consoles ever since. Similar story with the Xbox as well.

Yeah, you can try to justify it all you want. It's still theft.

You obviously don't know what theft means. The picture explains it quite well. Obviously, piracy is still illegal, but it is not theft, and that is a fact.

Typical sony. Focus on piracy, and fail to admit that jailbreaking has other uses.

The vast majority of CFW users (> 95%) just want to run pirated games. You know it as well as I do.

    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
