Sony: Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention and Piracy

Recommended Posts

when your consol gets banned can you still us the built in browser to surf the internet?

or is a banned consol just not able to get on to the PSN Network?

Hmm, I'm not sure about a banned PS3, but I just tried the web browser on my PS3, and it looks like you are able to use it without being signed in to PSN.

Blah Blah Homebrew, blah blah, piracy not being theft.. Sure its not.. I'm just gonna play this 60 dollar game for free. All BS excuses to try and justify piracy. We get it, you're a dirty pirate. No body cares what the excuse is.

So stealing games from them, ok... Them fighting back = **** you?Someone has entitlement issues.

But them stealing functionality from us (Linux) is perfectly fine? Great. I, as a game programming student, do not advocate piracy, but when a company removes functionality I wanted to use, and there might be a way to get it back, I'd rather go down that route tbh...

You obviously don't know what theft means. The picture explains it quite well. Obviously, piracy is still illegal, but it is COPYRIGHT theft, and that is a fact.

You are stealing the COPY RIGHTS from the publisher of that game. Get your high horse out of the gutter next time?

i am ok w/ Sony banning users from PSN who mod their systems. what i am not ok with is when Sony thinks they can sue people over it.

this just gives the modder cause to disconnect their system from the internet. simple as that. if youre going to mod your PS3, no internet connection.

I am with Sony on the banhammer coming down. You hack, mod, pirate games and play them online and use hacks/cheats to screw with others game play and look cool in the process you deserve to get the banhammer on your console and no more PSN access. You want to mod your console, go ahead but you shouldn't be allowed to play online.

Why is that MS can do this in a similar fashion and no one gives a ****, but Sony does it and every bashes them?

I wonder if it's because Microsoft have been doing it for a lot longer? They've been doing it since the Xbox days, so it's not that much of a surprise nowadays. Another point to make is that Microsoft are pretty restrictive with Xbox Live. A good example is Unreal Tournament III. Epic wanted to bring mods onto the console versions, like they do with the PC version. Sony said yes, and PS3 players could play mods (they could also play with a keyboard and mouse if they wanted to), but Microsoft said no.

And this is EXACTLY what MS does to people who mod their consoles. I should know, as I had a modded console. They ban the console from connecting to their online service, be it Live or PSN, but the console still works offline. It is the risk you take when you mod your console. Get caught, and you can no longer go online.

Why people are up in arms over this is literally beyond my comprehension.

Because it's Sony.

Wrong. Although you make a copy, that copy never belonged to you. It's similar to contract manufacturing. Even though your factory produced a duplicate of the good, that good does not belong to you.

And that's why it's called piracy.

I sense sarcasm lol.

But yea, maybe it is because they've been doing it longer. But people should have seen it coming.. no?

The vast majority of CFW users (> 95%) just want to run pirated games. You know it as well as I do.

Yes, a lot of people do use it for piracy, but some don't. If everything that could potentially be misused where to be banned we'd live in a pretty sad world.

Are you getting all lonely up there on that perch of yours?

They didn't steal it from you.

If you want linux, you have a perfectly functioning PC.

It was an advertised feature for the first iteration of the machine, and if you as a consumer had brought the device because of that feature, or if it had played a large part in you making the decision to buy you'd have every right to be seriously peed off. If this had been on a desktop OS, with Microsoft or Apple removing an advertised feature people would be absolutely up in arms about it. The fact that it is on a console shouldn't make a difference, it's still wrong. The other OS functionality wasn't the exploit vector used anyway, so Sony had no real need to close it off.

How's the sewer?

I don't even own a games console actually, every game I own I have brought legitimately, mostly from Steam. I don't pirate games, so before trolling and going on personal attacks i'd seriously suggest you get your facts straight.

So you're going to deride people for having the same ethics as you? What kind of sense does that make?

No one forced you to update your machine.

No, I am deriding people for acting like mindless Internet trolls, that think they have some inherent right to be everyone else's moral police, I am also deriding people for mindlessly accusing every person who wants to mod their hardware for being pirates. Unlike a lot of people, I don't act all stuck up and self righteous as if my choices make me better than them, I just like to look at things from both sides.

No one forced you to update your machine.

If you use them for online gaming you are forced to update it.

Indeed.. I don't have a PS3 but the whole argument is silly. Homebrew does not mean piracy. I have an original XBox that runs XBMC. No pirated games, but banned for modding. (Not just homebrew, has a bigger hard drive and a few other bits.) I have a 360 that has some homebrew games on it, along with a few apps. Again, nothing pirated, also banned. A Wii, same deal, various third party applications and games. I could pirate the hell out of it, but I don't. No interest and no need, have a PC for gaming that does it better. A modded console doesn't make a person an instant thief. And frankly a little annoyed by the holier-than-thou bullsh't comments that insinuate otherwise. (Not directed at anyone in particular, and not to the person I'm replying to especially.) When you pay for my console, you can tell me what I can and can't do with it. If I downloaded a pirated game, then yes, I rightly deserve to get my hardware banned. Cheaters need banned too, totally agree with that. If I'm playing, oh I don't know, some old LucasArts game (which I do happen to own) in a homebrew build of ScummVM for nostalgic reasons.. that's a different story entirely.

I used to use XBMC as well, on the original xbox. The original XBOX actually made for a very good and cheap media centre with only a couple of really easy modifications. Got rid of it a while back, as the lack of wireless support curtailed my media usage when I moved flat, but XBMC was a great piece of software, and a perfectly valid reason to mod the console.

If you use them for online gaming you are forced to update it.

Again this is YOUR choice, PSN is a FREE service, so they can control who can and can't use it as much as they like. Your choice was keep OtherOS and lose PSN or lose OtherOS and keep PSN.

Sooner or later something serve there course and get removed for various reasons. The same way that Microsoft dropped Live support from the original Xbox. It just happens, deal with it. Think of those people that bought their machine for online gaming only to have that taken from them.

This. If you want to mod your system and hack it, pirate games whatever. Do it offline, don't bring it online and ruin the experience for everyone. Play by the rules or GTFO

This is my opinion of the situation exactly.

I don't care what you do in your own home, you can pirate or use your PS3/360 or any other device however you want as long as it doesn't affect me or any other user in any way.

Can't say I blame them, but instead of getting "(law)suit-happy", they should have just done this to begin with.

I don't feel sorry toward hackers/crackers at all, so if they break the rules, then **** 'em. I just hope Sony can

recover from the losses.

Yeah, you can try to justify it all you want. It's still theft.

NO don't do that. You'll have people arguing about you for hours on whether or not its stealing just because you used the word "stealing", and they won't say anything about whether or not it's wrong that they got something for free that they are supposed to pay for.

The "piracy is not technically stealing" argument is such a copout argument, trust me, jumping into it will lead you into nothing but circles and frustration. All pirates have defense mechanisms, it's not worth trying to argue.

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
