It depends on how severe/simple the change is (i.e. is it a one line fix that fixes a major crash bug, or a 20KB change that only helps some users who mess about in about:config)

The DW font prefs is only for a minority of users, so it doesn't get bumped up into a new release.

The thing is, I don't even change any of those preferences. On vanilla install any branch of 6.0, or 7.0, looks so much better than 4.0/5.0 on my machine. Something by default has to have changed, it can't just be because of the introduction of user options, as I haven't touched any of them.

The text on Facebook/Neowin looks terrible on 4.0/5.0 for me, but absolutely fine on 6.0/7.0. I have a Nvidia GTS 220.

The font issue is the only thing stopping me from using Firefox at the moment. Can't be arsed with Aurora as its nowhere near stable enough to use properly. Sticking with Chrome until the font issue is fixed.

Funnily enough, I've been saying "sticking with Chrome until xxx is fixed." since Firefox 3.1

I'm loving 5.0 beta 3 because it is faster, but my main issue with Firefox right now is responsiveness after sitting idle for awhile. I'll sometimes have 16 tabs open, let the browser sit for awhile, then come back to it and it won't let me scroll and it says not responding. The screen will even go white for a bit. If you let it sit for awhile it eventually comes back, but that is a major issue that needs to be fixed. Anyone ever have that happen to them? If they can just improve on the responsiveness of the browser, it'll be perfect in my opinion. I hope they are working on that for version 6 and above.

That's good to know. Are you using the same add-ons with the nightly that you used with the previous versions? I want to rule out add-ons causing the issue.

Oh, no. My nightly is squeaky clean, without any addons ( :p sorry forgot to mention that). The hang occurs when I go to the first website after opening firefox (not always, though). Also, dTA addon makes firefox irresponsive (for about a sec or 2) when a download hit 100%. Have you tried surfing with a clean profile?

Oh great now none of my Add-ons work in FF 5.0. Thanks Google/Mozilla whatever.

It still takes 3-4 seconds to load FF 5.0, compared to instantly for IE/Chrome.

Even after disabling addon compatibility? If yes, then try informing the addon developer.

I won't argue with the startup time, but for me 3-4 seconds is a good exchange to a more flexible browser (again, my own view based on my own experience)

KingCrimson, what addons aren't working? A large number were bumped to be compatible with Fx5 with no issues, only a few need to make changes.

Can't be arsed with Aurora as its nowhere near stable enough to use properly.

Aurora isn't unstable from my experience, and I've been using it as my main browser since it first appeared. Anyway, that's more appropriate for the Firefox.next thread.

There's a chance the fonts issue will be resolved in 5.0. Landing on Nightly today is g 661471 - Create preference(s) to allow specific font families to be forced to use GDI Classic rendering , which is supposed to be added to Aurora and Beta as well.

What this does is force Firefox to render the MS 'webcore' fonts using GDI classic-style rendering.

I feel like the font issue should have a separate topic. Discussions usually span multiple versions (e.g. Hey guys who use 5.0, this is a planned change in 6.0) and so it does not make sense to discuss it in version specific topic. Also, I don't care about the issue at all because my fonts have always been rendered perfectly (maybe because my screen has high DPI and I use default Aero). I want to catch up on other changes and the font issue just totally crowds the thread, making me just not want to check the thread altogether.

Did 5.0 final just get pushed out or is this another beta? I got a 16.9MB update this morning and have now apparently lost the ability to either see or select which channel I'm running in.

There is no longer a channel switcher https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659972

Their site is getting hammered right now. Will have to check it out later. Funny because I just switched from FF4 to FF5 beta 7 last night, then see this. I was quite shocked though to go into the nightly though and see Alpha 7. I really hate to say this, but I feel like they are getting too weird with their releases. Used to be a new version every year or less or so and now, they are working on three versions at the same time. Very confusing to me. Sort of to the point of "Should I just go to Version 6 and wait for 7, or go to 5 and wait for 7, or maybe it is 6?"

Actually they are working on nightlies , few fixes make their way to aurora , and then stability check ups and fixes make up the beta , and then other bug fixes end up in final version. So they are actually working on one version. And the point now is , "I just go to latest version what-so-ever"

    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
