Xbox Live Gamertag Glitch? Or Feature?

So upon Major Nelson annoucing last week that Microsoft would be resetting all the old Xbox Live gamertags which wern't transfered over to the new Xbox 360 I finally had my hopes up for getting the gamertag I've wanted for years.

Well it looks like I got my hopes up too soon.

Upon doing some reasearch, I've found out that if someone has the gamertag you want, but it has spaces in it, you wont ever be able to have that gamertag. EVER.

Example.

The gamertag "Neo" is taken.

So you want the gamertag "N e o".

Well you're out of luck. The new Xbox Live will make the tag "N e o" unavailiable because someone has the gamertag "Neo".

Another example:

Let's say your gamertag is your name: "John Smith"

Well no one can ever have the gamertag "JohnSmith" or "JohnSm Ith" or "Jo hn S mIth" etc.

I find this to be rather retarded, and I ask, is this a new feature to Xbox Live? Because on the original Xbox I've seen people with the same tag with spaces. Example "Lol" and "L o l" , "L ol" or "Lo l".

I don't see how you think "N e o" is different than "Neo." It's the same thing. The space is irrelevant when looking at gamertags--it's not really apart of the gamertag although it's included with the character usage.

Just the same with gmail. You can have [email protected] used everywhere but I can just as easily email [email protected] and it will go to [email protected] since it's the same.

The profile for "Lo l" has been deleted already. All 3 are the same, but with spaces.

I will never be able to have "Crisp" once it's been deleted.

Xbox Live gamertag name changes

Some folks in the Xbox Live community need to change their Gamertags since our new data schema is more complex and does not deal with certain similar names. Yea, it sucks. Yea we know.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Chances are that they will transfer over, especially given the long life of the 360 with all the scores/history people have built up.

that's not a glitch, it's to prevent accidental misappropriation of gametags and to simplify the software that governs them. imagine if n e o made a purchase but ne o or n eo ended up paying for it or something, not nice. this just makes things simpler.

IMO - Just choose a different one. It is a hassle but there is a decent reason. Just make it Cr1sp, krisp or any other way of spelling it. Or you can do the easy thing and just add a series of numbers afterwards or an additional part to the name like Crispy1, Crispier or something.

Blasphemy. How dare you suggest we be creative in coming up with a gamer tag that is meant to represent us. We should be able to copy other people's creativity! :whistle:
