Digital Gallery...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so based on this thread ( btw no disrespect intented)

I was thinking:

Maybe one of the admins or news editors make an article once a month, to cover the photography section in a front page article, They can chose any photo they like, contact the user and just briefly describe the works (equipment, composition, tech, etc.).

The purpose would be to get more user involved :) since not even a neowin news editor ( again, no disrespect) did not know about our digital gallery and to a certain extent digital photography is tech related.

So anyway...

LOL, targeted thread is targeted.

First off, I need to defend the staff. As far as "senior" staff goes (and I'm assuming that news editor is considered senior, I'd have to ask Steve about that), I'm probably the least knowledgeable;e of forum activity. I registered on the forum only because I was being considered for a writing position, and I never really got chance to explore the forums much. I spent much of my time either writing or in staff sections dealing with staff-y things. That's why I didn't know there was a photography section. I doubt that would be the case with other staff members.

So, here's the deal with FP coverage. I hear what you're saying about coverage and visibility, and I think all the areas of the forum would probably want the same kind of treatment. Keep in mind that the FP is for news, and we bring forum activity into it ever once in a while for news-related things (like member reviews), and then it's only on weekends. having a dedicated photography post(s) on the front page would likely just open a can of forum worms that we're simply not ready to handle. Every area of the forum will want a piece of the action.

Also, we haven't typically reported on photo tech in the past, as it isn't part of our news cycle (PC industry, MS, Apple, Google, Internet, Mobile, PC Hardware, some gaming). Adding photography isn't something we're ready to consider, atm. We've got enough to improve on in what we already write that adding photography just isn't really an option right now.

Some ideas:

- If we did decide to do some kind of 'Featured Forum section' post (which isn't all that bad of an idea, actually) it would have to be on a rotating basis with other areas. It's definitely something worth thinking about, and i'll bring it up the powers that be.

- Do your own SEO! This doesn't have to be 'just another buried forum area at neowin'. Branch out and make this the place to be for people outside of Neowin as well as members, I just write the news, I don't build websites or communities, so I couldn't tell you the "how" of all that, but if you can build membership in this area of the forum, you ultimately benefit the whole of Neowin.

That's my .02, and nothing I say is final or authoritative; I'm just an editor. This sounds like more of a moderation and admin issue, tbh.

Unlike Tzvi, I browse the forums as much as Rappy.. well, maybe a little less. You can tell by my post count i've been very active on Neowin Forums for many, many years.

I actually like the idea of putting more spotlight on the forums. We've been trying to boost forum activity over the past few months, and based on the numbers, it's starting to pay off.

Rather than shoot your idea down, I would like to take in some feedback from the community (yes, not staff!) and see how many are interested in photography. We've tried numerous things on the front page to help generate posts and activity on here, including adding links to the daily gaming posts, and I even had an idea to showcase the top 5~10 threads on the front page, but the ideas didn't have much interest behind them.

As a photography amateur (very amateur) I would of course like to see photography stuff on the front page, but it needs to tie into a big market and be related to tech (which is sort of is).

As much as rappeh? BLASPHEMY! Does it necessarily have to be 100% tech related? I mean just discussing the hardware behind it would be tech related. How would you spotlight a section from the general discussion in that sense?

It's just showing what neowin is and what goes around in the forums etc. That even though neowin is a tech related site, we have our hobbies. Though if you wanted to Tie in technology, that's pretty easy, i'm betting if you ask anyone in the digital gallery, they'd find a way. Heck even a "what camera to buy" would be an easy tie in, or what software to post process.

snip

Every area of the forum will want a piece of the action.

/snip

That's the only problem I'd see with it.

Maybe a thread/tutorial on different image effects and how to obtain them with certain devices? I'm somewhat camera illiterate (beyond mid-grade DSLRs), so I'd actually be interested in that sort of thing. However, idk if that's FP-worthy...?

I'm up for it.

I honestly NEVER read the front page. I didn't even know there was a "front page" for years; I was always here for the forums only. When I do glance over there, I never really see the connection to the forums or vice versa.

preach brother preach!

Seriously, though this just points out TVzi didn't know about the camera lab and how crazzy didn't know about the front page (though hard to believe :s  )

Well I've been registered on the forum for 6 years now, so it was during my less active "early" days.

I guess it really comes down to how neowin wants to run things, if they want to combine the two sections or keep them separate.

Or hell, maybe create a new area that links the two even more? I dunno. Just tossing it out there. I know FP news articles already show up in the forums.

Yeah... Though I don't think separating the FP form the forums is a good idea, after all, it's the forums that keep neowin alive? Though I know nowadays it's more business oriented so...

Anyway, it's all just suggestions. You can add me in the "I barely look at the front page" most of the interesting stuff, for me, goes on in the forums :p

I've a couple ideas, like write a what camera guide or photography tips guide, though I'll make a thread about it in the Digital Gallery forum, once the guide is completed then we can post it here.

Butt, like i've said in previous posts, that's actually pretty easy, just focus on a specific topic of each subforum for example:

NeoBahn: Make a poll on what neowins drive and why (suvs, 4x4, compacts, convertibles), then have it on the FP

Wall of sound: Musical recommendation genre/song of the week/month

Hardware hangout: Recommendation of the WEEK ( this would have to be weekly keeping with the whole "tech forum thing")

Windows: Program of the week

Apple: Etc...

Internet security: Which router and why. ( not to mention there's hundrends of good topics here)

OS customization... this is one has SOO much potential, "Desktop of the week" "sleekest desktop" "theme" etc.

This just based on "Recommendations" there are many others way to get subforums to teh FP, it's just wanting to...

But this is about the DIGITAL GALLERY subforum, so please stop thread-jacking it

Healthy bump, though with the lack of attention this is getting from the digital camera people is meh... :/

Did you advertise this thread in the digital camera forum? Most people don't venture around the forums... The only reason I saw this thread is cuz it showed up in the mini spy one day!

I really ONLY check the camera forum.

    • Apple are scared of their customers! They have built a brand over the years of "it just works out of the box", but that slows innovation. Samsung's master stroke was the Galaxy Ultra: "Let's cram everything into one handset, make it so stupid only real nerds will love it, some of the features will work, some won't, but the audience will have such a high tolerance they won't care". Apple has no such device and so they are constantly worrying these days about the fallout of creating a new experience that customers might not like. I know it is often cited the reason they don't build a touchscreen Mac Book is they don't want to cannibalise the the iPad market, but I think it's equally cold feet after the criticism Microsoft receive trying to make a touch compatible desktop OS

    • So, an article that has nothing to do with Windows 11, still gets Windows 11 in the title and a build number as the picture? Dell have a buggy build of Support Assist HP have UEFI settings that need unlocking for the secureboot cert upgrade to take place.
    • What I can't seem to understand is that Google are paying SpaceX? Surely it would be the other way round, with SpaceX needing Google's datacenters etc.? Oh well, this level of money and power is way outside of my comprehension at the best of times.
