That is only your opinion, for me the new download manager is A LOT much better than that horrible add-on. :)

I gave arguments, you gave none. So excuse me for not trusting you.

Sir please, its not the final version , if you have suggestions , post somewhere where you would be heard by "developers" (Bugzilla).

Did they ever listened to somebody? Every constructive comments on bugzilla appears to be ignored.

See this one for example : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645313

Are the animated tabs like moving tabs ever coming back? Feels so outdated having to use the "arrow" move still on Firefox. Haven't seen anything about this in awhile and lost the bug tracker.

Thanks!

I've been wondering about that, too. I wish they would hurry up and fix it and release it in Firefox 12/13! In the meantime, you can use this extension. Only problem is, it doesn't work with TabGroups Manager, which makes it a dealbreaker for me. It's hard to stop using that great extension. You can use TabGroups Menu or TabGroup Switcher for a somewhat similar effect, though.

Animated Tabs (Does NOT work with TabGroups Manager)-https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/animated-tabs/

TabGroups Menu-https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tabgroups-menu/?src=search

Tab Group Switcher-https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-group-switcher/?src=search

If anyone knows of a way for animated tabs to work with TabGroups Manager, let me know. Thanks!

Download Statusbar is much better than the new video downloader. You can see all your current DL at a glance and you don't have to click 2 times to open a downloaded file.

WTF are doing the guys at Mozilla? There have really no clue about what they are doing or what?

Remember that the devs are not designing for you, they are designing for everyone. Download Statusbar is way too complex and jarring for most people (note: I use that addon, though in a mode that makes it more like the new UI). Most people don't download a lot at once, for example.

Bugzilla is not really intended as a general discussion platform - it's a tracker system. Mozilla uses generally uses public mailing lists for that, plus http://forums.mozillazine.org is a good place (it's not internal, but it is visited).

How is it too complex? It looks as simple as what Chrome offers by default.

I know, I part of the Mozilla fundation, but the guy was pointing me out to bugzilla, nonsense.

It can go both ways. The Chrome bar takes up a bit of space on smaller screens, so why not just make it button on the top right, where someone that wants to know about their download they can find out by clicking on it. Then click anywhere on screen to close it.

Much simpler + nicer.

Is anyone else bothered by the way the Back Button looks when there is no site to go back to? Looks odd with the entire button faded out the way it is. Think it's the border and the way it blends.

Smooth Scrolling on Nightly etc. seems to annoy me greatly. Not sure if everyone else prefers smooth scrolling or not. To me it just gives me headaches. I know it can be turned off, but seems odd to have it on by default.

Private Browsing mode looks interesting:

How do we get ours to look like that? If a theme isn't available, how do I at least get the yellow bookmarks star? Assuming it opens a dropdown menu with my bookmarks. That's what I want, or is that just the bookmark this page icon that's normally in the url bar? I want something like this extension, but that is compatible with the Add Bookmark Here extension. This one doesn't appear to be compatible. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-menu/?src=ss

It's apparently not compatible with firefox 10 either? Try dragging a tab away to create a new window.

Maybe not fully compatible, but it worked last time I tried it when I disabled TabGroups Manager. It wasn't perfect, but it sort of worked. I'll be happy when they finally add it back to Firefox and it works with TabGroups Manager. Hopefully in Firefox 13 or soon after.

UX Builds now have the new Download Manager http://ftp.mozilla.o...uilds/ux-win32/

Here is a video preview

One thing I noticed with the new Download Manager would be to have the "show all downloads" on a seperate tab instead of a pop-up box. Are they going to be implementing the tab navigation anytime soon? Popup boxes need to go soon.

Is there an easy way to clear downloads from the list? There needs to be a clear all button, or a little trash can icon next to each download, so u can delete them from the list.

You have to right click on a file. You have two options then. "Remove from list" or "Clear list".

That's not bad, but I'd like an option right on the Download Manager. Left clicking is easier, but it's not a big deal. The Download Manager looks promising to me. This new UX build with the Download Manager doesn't conflict with Status-4-Evar, Download Statusbar, or Download Manager Tweak? That's good if it doesn't.

So what? With download statusbar the space used isn't as big as it is in Chrome.

People who want to know about their DL have the nice coloured effect on the taskbar on Windows 7. Also, download statusbar shows the progress per download instead of on global time for all DL (which is confusing).

Finally, as said before, it reduces the number of click to open a complete DL.

So "much simpler + nicer"? Nope.

"Download manager tweak" allows you to have DL in tab.

Mozillazine is not by/for mozilla.

I didn't say it was 'by' mozilla. I said it's not internal, but it is visited (by mozilla people). It's certainly 'for' mozilla, though.

In any case, I believe my point stands: bugzilla is not a general discussion platform - it's a tracker. Report bugs, give direct, specific feedback - but don't fill it with opinions.

Don't forget those who don't have Win7, which is a huge number of people (again, part of the 'design for everyone' concept). Like I said, most people aren't downloading a lot of items - splitting up downloads is a bit over the top for most (plus, the Win7 taskbar effect wouldn't help there anyway).

Number of clicks to open a complete download: yes, putting it right in front of the user does reduce it by one. However, putting it right in front of the user is pointless until the download has actually finished. Plus, if they don't want to deal with it immediately, it's just an annoying waste of screen space. Only very common screen actions need be a single click away, and I don't think running a download is one of them.

Please stop fighting over whether certain addon is better or not , it boils down to personal opinion :|

I wouldn't class this as 'fighting'? It's a completely valid discussion about a major new feature - the upcoming built-in download manager. I wouldn't class it as just down to personal opinion, either - UX choices have more to them than just subjective opinions. (And I think AnthonyD has some interesting points, even if I don't ultimately agree with them)

Why would you assume most people only download one file at a time? Are they still using dialup? With services like google docs and dropbox, it common that people do indeed download multiple files at the same time. Also, it should be noted that Chrome splits up the downloads in its download bar and it's the most popular browser, so I think people are handling it just fine.

Putting the download time and speed is not pointless. I've lost count of how many times I would be waiting for a download to finish and start doing something else that is bandwidth consuming (e.g. watch youtube), prolonging the time for the file to finish. DL Statusbar solves that problem and makes me aware of my activities by providing details of all the pending files. If someone does not want the download bar to show up during the downloading itself, they can just implement a simple option to "hide until complete."

My point is mozilla shouldn't be putting in a half-baked feature that is just as useless as the current download popup menu. People love to argue the "what if someone doesn't want it like that." The solution is always to just add an on/off switch. This does not only apply to firefox, but other programs as well. With that said, they need to implement the dl statusbar into firefox and offer options to control it's behavior to the user's liking.

Be kind to notice that we are not talking necessarily about addons, rather the implementation of the new download manager versus having a download bar similar to the download statusbar addon, which is entirely a relevant argument.

I'm not saying people don't sometimes download more than one file, I just think it's likely that most people aren't downloading multiple files at once most of the time - which makes it the better case to primarily design for. It should obviously still be able to cope with multiple at once.

The new UI has the download time on it. The speed in kb/s is something only advanced users care about - everyone else just wants to know when it's done. (I do personally care a bit about that info, but that's cause I'm a techie)

Note, it's not finished yet, and won't be until it's actually live in people's hands. It will have an on/off switch, in that it can still be replaced by an addon. Otherwise, what would the on/off switch be? If it means keeping the current UI - that's not what you (or I) want either.

(Btw, just want to note, I am not implying the current version is perfect.)

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
