New Australis Tab Try Build is out ( http://ftp.mozilla.o...31f5/try-win32/ )

Tab bar isn't draggable now . But other wise it looks neat. Except this (Firefox should really improve their Persona themes) :

Laggy as hell compared to the latest final release

So I read this article Chrome has gotten 26 percent faster this year , and wondered how fast has FF become over a year !

I ran the same Octane test , for FF8 , FF16 and the latest nightly FF 19 (The build is exactly a year after FF 8 was launched).

The results were :

FF 19 6025 (106%) <8 Nov 2012>

FF 16 5408 (85%) <9 Oct 2012>

FF 8 2921 (0%) <8 Nov 2011>

So that's all , FF has seen such drastic performance improvements over a year that it puts Chrome's improvements to dust.

Just for sake of comparison , I also tested Chrome 24.0.1312.5 dev , and it scored 8577 (42% faster than FF 19) , which ain't that bad I guess for Firefox I guess.

PS : A very delightful and a happy birthday to Firefox for completing its 8 years ! :D :D :D

Drastic improvements indeed, but still far from the fastest. I prefer FF, but the gap in performance is too large to ignore compared to chrome on mac.

The performance depends on the workload, benchmarks can end up misrepresenting that since they only test a few specific things (and the browsers end up optimising for the popular benchmarks, possibly ignoring other performance issues, look at how IE9 was ?super-optimised? for Sunspider)

I've got some maths heavy JS code that's faster in Firefox than it is in Chrome, while there's a page with a fair bit of 3D transforms that's much faster in Chrome than it is in Firefox (And that's with the fixes so Firefox can go faster than 1fps)

I agree that each broswer may excel slightly better in certain types of rendering than others. But benchmarks are just a bunch of numbers. In the end, it comes down to real-world usage that ultimately decides which browser is set to my default, because in reality, most sites are a combination of many elements and rendering all of them together can only bring meaning to what is "fast" and "lightweight."

I can leave that Firefox for other browser if they become bloat and so cocky and arrogant and giving e10s only to Boot2Gecko and doing nothing but **** for desktop platform.

IE10 scroll absolutely amazing for me while Firefox makes text goes little blur and hard to focus when I start scrolling. FF hardware acceleration always keep my GPU in 3D clocks mode so cause high bills of electricity for me.

What not issue it has.. But still only happy because they are doing good in competing and stopping monopoly.

They have one spokesperson/developer for HWA on Windows. :/

Nope, they have more than one but again it comes to the fact that they are neglecting desktop while focusing on its Firefox OS.

It has OMTC, Electrolysis and several new focused memory optimization which only as by product affect desktop build and they added new memory reported for their OS while desktop variant does not have proper XML and DOM memory reporter as result Firefox sucks too much on XML pages and text heavy pages.

What not they are making desktop users to move to other browsers.

iv'e stopped using Nightlies, i find it pointless :(

agree with that. i use Chrome as my default browser for a long time now/, dont tell the Mozilla Fanboys that though :D

to Bogas's Comment

i think Chrome does a much better job of Syncing than Firefox IMO

Are you sure it's not your graphics card drivers causing that? My nvidia card only stays in 3D mode while it's scrolling/animating things (Since for the most part, those are done via 3D APIs), it goes straight back into 2D mode as soon as that stops.

Blurring sounds like a monitor issue, although if IE doesn't do it then it's still probably a driver issue.

IMO,

Firefox should copy IE10 for a good HWA model (significantly faster, uses less battery power).

Firefox should copy Chrome for a good multi-process model (gets stuck less, more responsive).

Firefox should copy IE10 interface for a good _native_ interface (no gradients and edges and visual noise).

Firefox should copy Opera for its software rendering backend (insanely fast for some reason)

Firefox should copy old Firefox for concentrating on Firefox (resource fragmentation).

First thought. Lol, you're out of your mind.

Second thought. Oh crap forget first thought. You're mostly right

AMD users also face this 3D clocks issue. When I use Chrome then my GPU remain it 2D clocks unless I run some demo related to CSS3 or Flash related site. IE smooth scroll and does not blur text on scrolling neither do Opera 12.10 do.

Only Firefox have these both issues.

hmm why would firefox start doing this without updating and any changes to settings/drivers/hardware. SfZgX.jpg tried fresh profiles, reinstalling firefox and video drivers. issue is on both 32 and 64 builds and does not occur on other browsers.

Latest Tuesday Patch of Windows added DX11.1 few stuff including new DirectWrite API etc so if your GPU is little old or drivers as well, they will get issues I think. Although it can Firefox fault as well.

I get on my 4k AMD GPU on W8 on Firefox.

IE10 renders like a champ.

100% Firefox problem.

i take it no one knows when they " Mozilla " will decide if ever when they'll Add Australis tabs to what version of firefox? https://wiki.mozilla.org/Features/Release_Tracking i see they removed the feature from Firefox19

...

It sounds like a driver issue, in that it isn't treating Firefox as primarily a 2D app (That's what the Nvidia driver does, which is why it goes back to 2D clocks then idle)

Lot's more coming soon!

1) Downloads Panel (an interim solution is added for glow on competition , if it works well then it will be used for next Aurora, already landed on mc)

2) Australis Tabs (beta quality builds are ready as per devs , soonish to land)

3) Stub Installer is close to be done (you may download any stub installer from ftps)

4) New Try Build for Australis Customizations

Firefox is frantically becoming irrelevant, even in the non-tech crow. One of my friend, who doesn't follow tech news, has installed Opera of all thing. Mind you, I always have to update his Firefox build to the latest version whenever I chill with him. He's complaining that Firefox is becoming slow on his laptop. He has 10+ tabs open at anytime though. But still, switching to Opera? that would be the last thing I would pick after Chrome and IE.

    • I have updated my Series 9 Watch so I assume there is either a mistake in what was said, or as suggested - the new AI feature set isn’t supported on anything other than those listed above.
    • WhatsApp slams Isreali firm, NSO Group, for trying to spy on its users by David Uzondu WhatsApp has come out accusing Israeli cyber-intelligence firm, NSO Group, of deploying a fresh wave of highly targeted "spear phishing" attacks against users, which its security teams successfully thwarted. The Israeli firm, according to WhatsApp, ran this operation like its usual one-click phishing campaigns, trying to get people to click malicious links that lead them to external sites. To coordinate the campaign, the spyware vendor created fake test accounts and groups on the messaging app. WhatsApp said it is sharing the specific malicious domains, ikhwancast[.]com, ghazacast[.]com, and fr24cast[.]com, because potential victims need this data to check if they were targeted across other messaging systems or email platforms. The NSO Group is infamous for creating and selling Pegasus, a military-grade commercial spyware capable of silently compromising smartphones simply by sending a message or placing a missed call via apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. Users do not even have to interact with the incoming notification before the infection takes hold. Once Pegasus manages to break in, the spyware harvests private data, letting operators read private messages, emails, photos, and documents. It also tracks precise GPS locations, records keystrokes, activates the device's camera, and monitors live microphone audio. Independent investigations by cybersecurity watchdogs like The Citizen Lab and human rights organizations like Amnesty International have proven that governments use this software to track humanitarian workers, journalists, diplomats, and political dissidents. These findings directly contradict NSO Group claims that clients use the technology to spy on criminals and terrorists only. In late 2021, the U.S. Department of Commerce added the firm to its Entity List, effectively banning the vendor from buying hardware and software from American tech companies. WhatsApp said in its blog post that the spyware vendor violated a permanent court injunction with this new spear-phishing campaign. This injunction, which took effect in 2025, strictly prohibited NSO Group from targeting WhatsApp and its users. The platform is now asking a federal court to hold the firm in contempt.
    • It would be surprising if even 3 year old Apple Watches (and not SE models at that) cannot run watchOS 27. Granted, it doesn't mean it would work as well. We'll see.
    • Apple launches new website for parents and a revamped Screen Time experience by Aditya Tiwari At WWDC 2026, Apple announced new parental control features for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 to keep kids' device usage in check and keep them safe online. As a parent, you'll get access to a simpler setup experience, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances, and a redesigned Screen Time. You'll be able to pick exactly which apps your child can access on their device, choosing from just a few essential apps, a curated set, or the apps you feel are appropriate. There will be an option to gradually add more apps. Ask to Browse is a new feature that requires kids to request permission before visiting a new website in Safari on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can also turn on a setting that requires your kid to ask for approval before connecting with an unknown contact via Messages, FaceTime, or the Phone app. You can manage your child's screen time more effectively with Time Allowances that work across categories, including Games, Entertainment, and Social Media. You can set time limits based on your kid's age and get suggestions informed by expert research. Speaking of expert guidance, Apple added that it's working with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to adapt its Family Media Plan to create a guide parents can refer to when using Apple products. Moreover, the company has also set up a new dedicated website, where you can find tools, resources, and answers to common questions around parental controls and child safety. Apple also allows parents to set daily schedules to manage screen time, configuring access to different apps at different times of the day and across the week. Overall, the Screen Time section has been revamped and provides a bird's-eye view of your kid's average device usage and most-used apps. "For example, to help protect important family moments, parents can quickly limit access during meals, outdoor play, and other times that deserve full attention. If kids need a little extra time to finish something in an app, parents can also easily extend access," Apple said. Apart from these, Communication Safety has been updated to block gore or violent content when detected in shared images or videos. The feature already blurs nudity in Messages and FaceTime calls, and is enabled by default for users under 18.
