Installing Windows 7 on SSD brings up 0x80070017 error

Recommended Posts

I have tried two different ISOs.

I've tried two different burners (on two separate systems).

I used two different DVD-RW disks.

Both were written at 4x using CDBurnerXP (their maximum speed).

All four discs burned successfully according to CDBurnerXP.

I installed Windows 7 on this very same SSD (with this same PC/motherboard/BIOS) nine months ago successfully.

I am trying Nero Burning ROM now (and this time, verify the written data in the program).

Any further ideas?

What makes you think it's the SSD?

Sounds like the DVD Burner is burning coasters or the DVD Reader is faulty. Don't rule out bad media either. I use ImgBurn which has a verify option to check that it can correctly read everything 100% from the disk it just has burnt, to help narrow it down.

I never said it was the SSD :| In fact, the opposite! I mentioned that I'd installed on the SSD in the past to show the SSD is fine.

EDIT: It appears to be the drive - there are various sector reading errors in the verification process. I'm going to try burning onto a DVD-R and if that still doesn't work, it seems I'll be sending the laptop back to be replaced.

Perhaps write zeros to the SSD, before Installing the OS.

Good luck.

Edit: found this:

The error code of 0x80070017 means it can't read the dvd. The good news is that you can fix it with little trouble. First of all, the only reason you have this error is if you downloaded the iso ...

You have to reburn the iso at a slower speed. You will get much better results if you burn the dvd with the same drive that you will install it on.

This error code and fix applies to Windows 7 installs as well.

Burning onto a DVD-R seems to be working so far (expanding files seems to be going much more smoothly). I wrote it at 8x and I wrote to the previous two DVD-RWs at 4x (their maximum).

I've put sticky notes on the two DVD-RW discs saying that they may be iffy, for future reference! :p

I almost forgot, it could also be the ISO for future reference, always check the SHA1/MD5 etc. hash.

I used two different ISOs, so I knew that wasn't the issue.

Eliminate a possible media problem completely, put Windows 7 onto a USB stick and install from that.

I don't have a 4 GB USB flash drive.
