According to The Verge, Microsoft will allow its employees in the US to work from home permanently. Back in March, Microsoft allowed its employees to work from home and then mandated a work from home policy as the pandemic worsened in the US. The company then notified employees in the US that the offices wouldn’t reopen at least until January 2021.
The company’s internal ‘hybrid workplace’ allows for far greater flexibility once US offices eventually reopen. Microsoft’s flexible working plans include allowing employees to work from home freely for less than 50 percent of their working week, or for managers to approve permanent remote work.
While most employees will be able to take advantage of the option, for a few roles that require access to the company’s offices, including those that require access to hardware labs, data centers, and in-person trainings, it will be difficult, or even impossible, to permanently transition to remote. Employees will also be able to opt for flexible working hours without manager approval.
The guidance suggests that employees will also be allowed to relocate domestically (or even internationally if remote working is viable for their particular role) with approval. Compensation and benefits, of course, will change and vary depending on the company’s own geopay scale. For permanent remote workers, Microsoft will be covering home office expenses but not any relocation costs.
