When you think about messengers, Spotify is probably the least likely brand to come to your mind. However, if you ever thought, "man, it would be nice to DM somebody on Spotify," guess what? You can now do that!
Spotify announced that the streaming service now has Messages, a "new way to share what you love on Spotify with friends and family," be it music, podcasts, or audiobooks. According to Spotify, users asked the platform for a dedicated space within the app where they can share music and other content:
Whether you’re sharing a new audiobook with a friend for book club, bonding over your new favorite song, or swapping history podcasts with Dad, the right recommendation can spark a great conversation with those closest to you. Messages are a fast and convenient way to share and chat about what you’re listening to with the people you care about.
Spotify Messages are now rolling out to users on Free and Premium plans in select markets. The only caveat is that you must be 16 or older. Also, direct messages are only available on mobile devices.
You can send a message on Spotify when listening to something. In the Now Playing view, tap the share icon, select your friend, and tap send. Once your message request is accepted, everyone can share something and react with emojis and text messages. You can also view your conversations by tapping your profile photo in the top-left corner.
For now, Spotify only supports one-on-one conversations. Developers also add that messages are end-to-end encrypted, and there are protections against illegal and harmful content. You can find more information about direct messages on Spotify in the announcement post.
