Verizon's Nokia Lumia Icon will finally be offered an official Windows 10 Mobile upgrade

If you're a Nokia Lumia Icon owner, tomorrow is the day you've been waiting for. Verizon will finally begin offering an official upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile for the device beginning on June 23.

When Microsoft announced the list of devices that were to receive an official upgrade, the rules were pretty clear. Any device with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, 512MB RAM, or 4GB of storage would not receive the upgrade.

The Lumia Icon was one of a few devices that clearly met the requirements, but was notably left off of the list. After all, with the exception of LTE bands and double tap to wake, the device is identical to the Lumia 930, which was on the list from day one.

We've been recommending that users use the Release Preview ring of the Insider Preview, as this will offer Windows 10 Mobile, along with cumulative updates. Since the official update is not bundled with any kind of device-specific firmware, it's the exact same thing. Well, except for when there's the odd cumulative update that only appears in the Release Preview ring, but never makes it to Production.

Last month, the Icon was added to the list of devices supported for Redstone Development Branch builds, giving users of the device hope for the first time in months. Now, Verizon has a page on its website dedicated to the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for the device.

Remember, you're going to need the Upgrade Advisor app to grab Windows 10 Mobile, which you can download here. If you ever decide that you're not happy with it, you can always roll back with the Windows Device Recovery Tool.
