THE OFFICIAL SPACEX HYPERLOOP POD COMPETITION

Since we first unveiled the idea for a new high-speed ground transport system called the Hyperloop back in 2013, there has been a tremendous amount of interest in the concept. We are excited that a handful of private companies have chosen to pursue this effort.

Neither SpaceX nor Elon Musk is affiliated with any Hyperloop companies. While we are not developing a commercial Hyperloop ourselves, we are interested in helping to accelerate development of a functional Hyperloop prototype.

For this reason, SpaceX is announcing an open competition, geared towards university students and independent engineering teams, to design and build the best Hyperloop pod. To support this competition, SpaceX will construct a one-mile test track adjacent to our Hawthorne, California headquarters. Teams will be able to test their human-scale pods during a competition weekend at the track, currently targeted for June 2016. The knowledge gained here will continue to be open-sourced.

This is how we spur innovation and competition....well done.

Years ago I had to submit a report, at university, on engineering costs benefits of high speed mag lav's.......they had to be subsidized then and more than likely now as well. This is a novel approach and will be intriguing. I hope this takes off.

Since first hinting about his plans for a nearly frictionless high-speed transit solution called Hyperloop two years ago, people have been entranced by the futuristic idea. Last year, Musk detailed his concept in an open-source white paper. In a nutshell, Hyperloop involves blasting pods down pressurized tubes at extremely high speeds. In the most popular example given, the transportation would get you from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 30 minutes. No more I-5? Where do we sign up?

The concept of high-speed frictionless train travel through pressurized, above-ground tubes began life as a fanciful dream -- one popularized by serial entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Last year, Musk expressed interest in an idea called Hyperloop -- a plan to propel pod-like trains through tubes at upwards of 500 miles per hour. But with Musk's energies devoted to his car and space travel projects, Tesla and SpaceX, he called on other entrepreneurs, engineers and problem-solvers take up the concept in his name.

Several start-ups sprouted. And now, one of them is announcing a significant step forward.

On Thursday, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies announced two new partners, Aecom and Oerlikon.

Aecom is a sizable and well-respected Fortune 500 engineering design firm. The publicly-traded company employs more than 100,000 people and pulled in $19 billion in 2014. Aecom has been involved in a number of large construction and infrastructure projects, including the Abu Dhabi International Airport and the Barclays Center.

"HTT's technology is very exciting and could have a significant impact on transportation infrastructure in the future," Andrew Liu, vice president of new ventures at Aecom, told seattlepi.com.

Though it's not clear how Aecom fits into the project, Oerlikon says it will be lending at least 12 of its employees to HTT's cause. Oerlikon is a slightly smaller Swiss tech firm that's worked on a number of highly specialized projects, including providing specialized vacuum components to CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

The partnerships were announced by Dirk Ahlborn, HTT's CEO, in a press release this week.

Ahlborn also said the company would be working with architecture firm Hodgetts & Fung, and plans to have passengers on test pods by 2018.

"Our team continues to grow and, along with these new alliances, is representative of the collaborative spirit of HTT and are key to our success in breaking ground in 2016," Ahlborn said in a press release. "We receive applications from professionals and are approached by industry leading companies every day."

Earlier this year, HTT announced it had secured to rights to several acres in Quay Valley, north of Los Angeles, on which to build the company's Hyperloop test track. HTT expects to break ground there in 2016.

"We have everything basically figured out for Quay Valley, but we are still trying to continuously develop new ways of making things better or more economical," Ahlborn told Tech Insider. "The timing always varies a little bit, but we are making steady progress, and, for now, we are still in our timeline and everything looks good."

"What we are doing has never been done before, so that is a very big challenge," Ahlborn said. "Over the next couple of months, we are going to reveal some things we have been working on for quite sometime."

Hyperloop: Transport into the Future

Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum imparts extensive expertise in vacuum technology to one of the most challenging transportation projects of the future. The German-American visionary Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, has set the goal of making the seemingly utopian idea of Tesla founder Elon Musk become reality: From 2018 onward, people shall travel with aircraft speed through a reduced pressure tube system.

Before any implementation, however, a multitude of tests and calculations for the vacuum conditions are required, before the Hyperloop track will be built in Quay Valley, California starting in 2016, transporting the inhabitants of this conceptual city. The track will be an eight kilometers long tunnel, to which the vacuum pumping equipment from Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum is connected.

 

 

Using optimum vacuum conditions with an expected pressure range between 100 mbar and 1 mbar, the air resistance against the transport capsule will be reduced and thus the total energy demand of the system is significantly lowered.

The selection of a suitable vacuum system for such a project is essential both for the establishment of the test track, but also for subsequent permanent use. During operation, the safety factors, ease of maintenance, operating costs and sustainability are important parameters, which need to be considered.

Careful consideration of these issues in the design and product development are an integral part for project management with Leybold Vacuum. The experiences gained from a variety of long-term research projects contribute to assess the optimum vacuum level needed.

Moreover, the accumulated vacuum expertise of a 165 years old technology leader is put to task: For the pumping-out times, the energy requirements and the recommended configuration, Oerlikon Leybold has already performed simulations.

"With our unique simulation software PASCAL we can interpret the entire Hyperloop-conditioning in every detail and thus calculate the required vacuum equipment for optimum operation. In addition, we are contact partners already involved during the run-up phase for all the design issues on vacuum engineering and for the subsequent implementation", explains Carl Brockmeyer, Head of Business Development and Leader for this ambitious project at Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum.

Just by taking advantage of existing and proven pumps and systems, a variety of vacuum combinations are possible, with dry compressing, as well as with conventional oil-sealed vacuum pumps.

Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum sees a high potential in the technology, and since vacuum technology is needed, the company aims to contribute to the success of Hyperloop. "There is a very special motivation in contributing to something fundamentally new which can revolutionized the traditional means of transportation," says Dr. Martin Fullenbach, CEO of Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum.

Companies such as Oerlikon with their ample experience have the best opportunities to implement such projects with their resources, products and related know-how. This is precisely the reason why the project managers of Hyperloop search for strong partners such as Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum in order to let a vision become reality.

Hundreds of teams are gearing up for the SpaceX Hyperloop competition

Over the next year, teams will compete for sponsorships and spots on SpaceX’s test track.

Across the country, teams are gearing up for the most anticipated engineering design competition in recent memory. As announced in June, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is inviting challengers to design early prototypes of pods that could travel through the ultra-high-speed Hyperloop system.

The deadline for entry was September 15, and more than 1700 teams have reportedly registered or expressed interest. That includes teams from Texas A&M, the University of Southern California, and even a team self-organizing through Reddit.

About 130 university teams have signed up, from 10 different countries, and SpaceX is giving them some extra support. Student teams that pass a preliminary screening stage in October will be invited to a design-workshopping weekend at Texas A&M on January 15-16, 2016. There, they’ll meet with corporate sponsors who will choose teams to finance and even collaborate with as they build their designs.

 

Dr. Greg Chamitoff, director of A&M’s aerospace research program and an organizer of the design weekend, says that in addition to team presentations, the event will include speakers, activities, and a variety of tech demonstrations from companies, and likely open to the public.

“Our intent here is to have a very exciting event at Texas A&M about the future of transportation,” says Chamitoff.

 

The final competition, open to both university and independent teams, will be at a SpaceX-built test track in California in June 2016. Pods for the competition won’t be full-size, but SpaceX’s initial requirements document says they’ll have to have braking, levitation, communications, and monitoring systems—though the test track itself will apparently provide propulsion.

Teams are still waiting to hear the exact specifications of that test track, now scheduled for release the week of October 5. That information has been delayed from an initial September release target (possibly because SpaceX is focusing on the fallout of the June 28 explosion of one of its Falcon 9 Rockets).

The spec is vital because the levitation systems usable by pods will depend on the tube. Most speculation about the Hyperloop has suggested that compressed air jets will be used to float pods. But some critics have argued that air bearings, which in current practical applications provide clearances of less than half the width of a human hair, could never work in such a large-scale application.

Alternatives include the use of wheels or magnetic levitation, but the feasibility of those ideas for the competition will hinge on the nature of the tube, and the initial SpaceX rules state outright that wheeled pods are “unlikely to win prizes.”

One team with a big head start is based in the University of Illinois’ Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, where Emad Jassim directs the Undergraduate Program. Students there have been working on Hyperloop designs since 2014, and built a working scale model of the Hyperloop as a senior design project.

“[For the competition] we’re mainly focused on the capsule,” says Jassim, “Where before we were looking at the whole thing. I think that gave us some good insight into the issues associated with the design.”

Whether or not his team wins, Jassim says interest in the competition has been “fast and furious,” making it a big opportunity to get students excited about STEM fields.

Elon Musk's Hyperloop Takes A Step Forward

For the first time in close to a century, mankind may be about to give serious attention to a technology that has the potential to be a true game-changer in transportation.

Elon Musk famously proposed the idea of the Hyperloop a few years ago, and suggested it could be a revolutionary method for travel based on available technology today. The Hyperloop has already created extreme controversy with skeptics citing everything from the cost of land in California to the substantial g-forces that would impact passengers being accelerated from 0 to 700+ miles per hour in a short span of time.

Yet while there are reasons to be cautious about the technology, the Hyperloop should also be cheered as the continuation of a long tradition of American innovation and pushing the boundaries of the human experience.

Now Musk's Hyperloop looks set to take its first tentative steps towards reality as a test version of the track is nearing the construction phase. This begs an interesting question - if the Hyperloop works, how big of a disruptive force would it be for the airline industry? The Hyperloop certainly has other (arguably simpler) market opportunities than moving people, such as disrupting the air freight or trucking industry, but those are issues for another time. For today, it's useful to just think about the impact of the Hyperloop on the airline industry.

In practice the Hyperloop's ability to compete with airlines is going to be driven by a combination of price of tickets and travel time. Price, in turn, will be substantially impacted by energy costs for transporting passengers in the Hyperloop. The technology behind the actual test track of the Hyperloop is well proven, but not on the scale that Musk and others need to see for the Hyperloop to actually function. Instead, there are a few possible ways to power a Hyperloop capsule in theory.

The Hyperloop capsule represents something like a cross between the pneumatic tubes found at banks and hospitals today (and which once crossed miles of cities decades ago) and a maglev train. Determining exactly how much power a Hyperloop would require is tricky at this stage but it's also an important issue. One of the reasons that some previously new transportation ideas, like hovercraft, have never really gotten off the ground is their massive energy requirements.

So how much energy would be needed to "shoot" a Hyperloop canister along the tube? The proposal from Musk originally envisioned a constant energy source in the form of a compressor rather than simple impulse acceleration (like a bullet). It's not totally clear if the new test tracks will deviate from the original proposal or not, but assuming that the designers stick to roughly what Musk originally proposed, a 436 hp (325 KW) capsule motor would be required.

For comparison, trains' locomotives frequently have around 4,000 horsepower, while a typical car often has around 150 hp. The biggest challenge here is how much friction the system will face from the air around it. In particular, the system needs to produce a large enough pressure in order to move the capsule along the track.

The math behind the mechanics of moving the tube is a little complex, but a back of the envelope calculation based on Force, Pressure, Area and Ideal Gas law calculations suggest Musk's estimates are reasonable. (For those interested, a good overview of the relevant mechanics properties are here).

Overall, the Hyperloop would use perhaps as little as 27 kW of power per passenger (assuming a very conservative 6 passengers per tube and a 30 minute travel time on the trip). The power requirement increases if the tube size increases of course, but on a per passenger basis that is relatively irrelevant.

Essentially the math here suggests that a Hyperloop tube could move passengers for as little as a few dollars each in energy. The real issue that will determine feasibility then is the capital expenditure cost for the Hyperloop. More on that in a future article.

During the Jan. 29-30 competition, more than 1,000 students representing over 100 universities and three high schools will present their Hyperloop Pod design concepts to panels of judges.

The Design Weekend teams were selected by SpaceX from hundreds of entries to present their concepts to a panel of SpaceX, Tesla and university judges for a chance to build and test their design prototype at the world’s first Hyperloop Test Track being built by SpaceX adjacent to its headquarters in Hawthorne, California. This final phase of the Hyperloop competition will be held in the summer of 2016.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will discuss the future of transportation during a private event for the student teams held during Design Weekend. 

In conjunction with the Hyperloop competition, Texas A&M will also host a Future Transport and Tech Fair where the Hall of Champions at Kyle Field will be transformed into a hub of innovation for futuristic transportation. In addition to exhibit booths showcasing the design concepts of the Hyperloop Pod teams, there will also be several hands-on experiential displays, new technology and other exhibits.

Judging begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29 at the Memorial Student Center and continues Saturday at 8 a.m. The public is invited to view the Hyperloop design submissions during the Future Transportation and Tech Fair from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hall of Champions.

The results of the competition, including which teams will be selected to compete on the actual test track, will be announced at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Hyperloop, a high-speed ground transport concept was first proposed by SpaceX and Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk in 2013. With the Hyperloop, passengers could travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in under 30 minutes, radically transforming the speed and safety of passenger mass transit. Design Weekend which SpaceX announced in June, is a preliminary competition for students designed to encourage innovation and challenge them to design and build the best Hyperloop transport Pod.

Next weekend is the design presentation weekend for all the hyperloop contenders in Texas, yesterday a team from TU Delft in the Netherlands revealed the design they are taking to SpaceX next week :) TU Delft is also the university that has dominated the World Solar Challenge pretty much straight up for the last decade or so, I wonder what they can do with this baby!

This is a win-win for everyone involved. I am sure there will be some great designs. Hopefully, this will eventually be a yearly event so that designs can also make improvements and continue the research.

While Hyperloop Transportation Technologies is still deciding who will build their own Hyperloop test track, SpaceX has already chosen the company that will build theirs later this year.


Aecom, one of the world's largest infrastructure firms, announced today that it has been given the task of designing and building the first Hyperloop test track for Elon Musk's company. Some of Aecom's previous projects include the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York; the Abu Dhabi International Airport, and the Ottawa Light Rail Transit in Ottawa, Ontario.

 

"Aecom has designed and built some of the world’s most impressive transportation systems, so we appreciate how the development of a functioning Hyperloop with SpaceX can dramatically expand the ways people move across cities, countries and continents," said Aecom CEO Michael S. Burke in a statement.


The one mile long track is being built as part of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition, and will be used to test the transport pod prototypes currently being designed by university students. The track's six-foot diameter steel tube will include a non-magnetic sub-track and run adjacent to SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California.


The Hyperloop competition's "Design Weekend" will be held at Texas A&M University on January 29 and 30, with over 100 students attending to present their pod designs.

In the subsystems category, Texas A&M Aerospace Engineers team, RIT Imaging from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a team from RMIT University in Australia. 


A team from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in Spain took the technical excellence prize and a team from University of Washington won the safety award.


In the subsystem technical category, the University of Edinburgh and Conant High School in the Chicago area were winners. The best overall subsystem award went to Auburn University. Bryerson University was also honored in the subsystem category.


Auburn also won in the design category and a team from Cairo University won the innovation award. Universitat Politecnica de Valencia won the top design contest.


SpaceX founder Elon Musk made a surprise appearance at the competition, answering questions and thanking the teams.

The country's biggest railway equipment manufacturer, CRRC, is reportedly looking to invest in a company developing the Hyperloop commercially. 

According to a Bloomberg report, the LA-based start-up Hyperloop Technologies is in initial talks with CRRC about collaboration and investment. 

 

"We are speaking with potential customers and partners around the world but do not comment on any specific customer meetings," a spokesperson for Hyperloop Technologies told Tech Insider in a statement. 

 

"We expect many opportunities will emerge to deploy our Hyperloop system in Asia, for both freight and passenger services and expect the first three Hyperloop production systems will begin construction between 2017 and 2020, with first services to start by 2021," the spokesperson said. 

 

According to the report, the state-owned trainmaker is looking to double its international sales over the next five years. So it's possible it is exploring the Hyperloop system as a way to grow business. 

 

The Hyperloop is a futuristic transport system that carries passengers in capsules at speeds reaching more than 500 miles per hour. Musk first proposed the idea back in 2013 in a white paper and since then several companies have launched aiming to bring the concept to life. 

 

Hyperloop Technologies and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies are the two primary start-ups involved in developing the technology. 

 

Both companies are planning to build Hyperloop test tracks in the US this year. But there is a good chance that both start-ups would look outside the US to develop any full scale Hyperloop system. This is because its easier to get access to secure land to build a large system in other countries.

 

In July 2015, Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of HTT, told Tech Insider that after the company finished its five-miles test track in Quay Valley, California, it would likely grow its business overseas, developing a system in Asia or the Middle East. 

 

And in October, Peter Diamadis, a board member for Hyperloop Technologies, said during a presentation in Dubai that the company could have a fully operational Hyperloop system built in the United Arab Emirates by 2020.  

 

According to a Moscow Times report published Thursday, both companies may also be looking to Russia to develop a full-scale system. 

 

Musk, on the other hand, has no plans to develop the Hyperloop commercially.

 

However, he is showing his support for the work being done by having SpaceX host a Hyperloop Pod design contest for students. 

 

The first round of the contest kicks off on Friday and selected participants will get to move on to the final round of the competition, which is slated to take place in June.

 

Students will get to try out their pod designs on a one-mile test track that is set to be built near the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif. 

 

While SpaceX is not affiliated with any start-up developing the system commercially, Hyperloop Technologies is a big sponsor for the student competition and will help fund selected teams so that they can build their pod designs.

Students are battling to make Elon Musk's hyperloop a reality

When the Tesla Motors and SpaceX chief executive officer first unleashed his outlandish idea for a Star Trek-style capsule transporting passengers on a cushion of air at 700 miles an hour, it seemed like pure fantasy. Well, guess what? A lot of people - many of them young engineering students - took him seriously. More than 1,000 of them are gathering this weekend at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where SpaceX is sponsoring its first-ever, two-day Hyperloop Pod Competition, which promises to be the world's loopiest, way-out science fair.

 

"There are a lot of crazy ideas out there, but when ideas are associated with someone like Elon Musk it feels like, OK, this is something," said Anshuman Kumar, 22, leader of the Hyperloop team at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and one of 20 CMU students travelling to Texas this weekend. "Everyone wants to be associated with the Hyperloop movement. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

 

Arriving from 20 countries, about 120 college teams and three from high schools will descend on the vast Texas campus to present their designs. They're flying in from India's Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Egypt's Cairo University, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Imperial College London, to name a few. US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

 

Musk already has something of a cult following among a new generation of engineers owing to his work on electric cars, solar power and reusable rockets for eventual travel to Mars.

 

And now, the Hyperloop. Musk's latest bright idea may or may not ever solve the world's transportation challenges, but it's certainly smart marketing. The competition will bring the best and brightest engineering minds from around the globe under one roof, where SpaceX recruiters will have their pick of the crop.

 

The frenzy began with Musk's Hyperloop Alpha, his 57-page manifesto released in 2013. The 44-year old Musk pulled an all nighter to finish his paper, which envisions a capsule hurtling on a cushion of air between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 30 minutes. Musk is the first to admit that pulling off such a feat will be no easy task.

 

"Short of figuring out real teleportation, which would of course be awesome (someone please do this), the only option for super fast travel is to build a tube over or under the ground that contains a special environment," Musk wrote. "This is where things get tricky."

 

After the paper was made public, the number of people following Musk on Twitter skyrocketed. At least two startups are trying to commercialise the idea on their own. But last June, when SpaceX itself announced a competition to build a pod, the idea caught fire. Within a week of the announcement, the company received 700 entries; the final total was 1,751, with 123 advancing to this weekend's design competition.

 

The conference will be held in the 30,000-square foot Hall of Champions, next to Texas A&M's football stadium. Many demonstrations and talks will be live-streamed. Booths will be brimming with students, some bearing prototypes, eager to talk about their designs and secure corporate sponsorship. An as-yet-undetermined number of teams will advance to a finals competition to be held this summer at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, where they will demonstrate their full-scale designs on a one-mile working test track.

MIT engineers win Hyperloop pod competition, will test prototype in mid-2016

The Hyperloop's journey from audacious concept to a functional, superfast transport system went up a gear over the weekend with more than 115 engineering teams descending on Texas A&M University to present passenger capsule designs in SpaceX's Hyperloop Pod Competition. An MIT team took out first place in the contest, and along with 22 other top designs it will now build human-scale prototypes to test out at SpaceX HQ later in the year.

The team says with the lowest available tube pressure available of 140 Pa, the pod should be accelerated at 2.4 G and have 2 N aerodynamic drag when traveling at 110 m/s. The design also features a fail-safe braking system that automatically brings the pod to a halt should the actuators or computers fail, and low speed drive wheels that can move the pod forwards or backwards at 1 m/s in an emergency situation.

 

It's an achievement any engineer would gladly add to their CV, but taking out the Best Overall Design Award doesn't guarantee the MIT team extra sway over the makeup of the final Hyperloop pod. All the knowledge gained through the competition will remain open source in a bid to flesh out the most appropriate design.

 

The winners will be joined by 22 other teams, including groups from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Waterloo, in the next stage of the competition. This will involve building a working prototype to test on a one-mile (1.6 km) track at SpaceX headquarters in California this coming US summer.

This is awesome progress. I can't wait till this hits a level where cargo freights are transported. Hope the tubes can take standard size containers :)
