Yeah, and not only the price is sky high, but now they removed the CD ROM and the Ethernet port too - yes, you heard right, no more Ethernet port!!! - What a joke.

Way to go Apple....

Where would you put the old, ugly Ethernet port on a machine that thin?

Not a big deal... if you REALLY need an ethernet port, you get the adaptor...

Concerning the optical drive... you know it's 2012 right?... With services like Netflix, iTunes Match, Pandora, etc. I don't see the point. I prefer a thinner, lighter laptop, without the obsolete optical drive!

Removing the Ethernet port is a big mistake, especially for IT people like myself who need that port to connect to customer modems to configure them, etc. As much as I love Apple products, I would never get a Mac Book Pro now. No CD ROM, No Ethernet port, no way.

Then the choice is simple, buy a thick 8-pounds Dell :p

Don't get me started on the Ethernet, it's not a big deal to me knowing that it's a "Thunderbolt" converter. You have to deal with it for the easing fact that the MPB is as thin as the MBA. What do you expect? They made it so much nicer for us, I mean you're already paying 2-3k based on the specs you want, a little extra wouldn't hurt. :)

Apple likes to remove future dead tech (ethernet, and optical drive) even if it's not actually dead yet.

Ethernet will never be dead technology, because whilst they are admittedly making great strides towards increasing the performance of wifi, it's an inherent problem of sending signals wirelessly that you'll never get the same latency benefits that you do with using a cable and for some users that matter is still important.

Don't get me started on the Ethernet, it's not a big deal to me knowing that it's a "Thunderbolt" converter. You have to deal with it for the easing fact that the MPB is as thin as the MBA. For a highly mobile device like a laptop/tablet/notebook, Ethernet isn't that important as long as it has something like WiFi (Which the new MBP does)

If they released a new iMac without Ethernet, then that'd be justifiably stupid.

This whole thing is laughable, i was following the rumours for months before the keynote and EVERYONE wanted a thinner, retina device, with no optical drive... in fact, people have been crying out for this for a couple of years now (thinner/optical drive-less at least, anyway). Now all these people have come out of the wood work crying because they need both?

1. Apple is not forcing you to buy this

2. There are other MBPs that do the job nicely

3. If you MUST have the new MBP, guess what u can spend an extra couple of quid and get the same functionality.

I personally think it's a bloody miracle that this thing is real, the keynote leaks, predictions etc were all true.. so all in all i'm really happy, i fall under point 3, i still do use ethernet (mainly because the WiFi on my current mbp sucks) and i still copy disks from time to time, so i'll be buying both but i can get they spend 99% of their life in my backpack.

There's just no pleasing some people. You would think they discontinued all other pro's and wiped cd drives and ethernet ports off the face of the earth the way some people are going on.

I'm just disappointed with the wait, order initially said 5-7 days, but order didn't seem to process, i called them yesterday to see what was going on, it processed this morning with a 3-4 weeks wait.

Basically, in terms of the lack of ethernet port, this could cause problems at some universities, if a student wanted this laptop for that (which is a bit daft imo unless you're in film studies, but the normal 15" would suffice there), then that poses a problem as many provide cables and ethernet ports in the walls for internet access, with no WiFi present at all.

So would you recommend this over the non-retina MBP? :p. Wifi is not a problem in my house. It's just I have to get the thunderbolt adapter to go everywhere with me. I can also probably get a education discount off the Gigabit adapter too so it probably won't be $30.

I just placed my order and it still was for me even with my educational discount.

I'd recommend the retina display MBP. Yesterday, I compared them side by side at an Apple Store. The new MBP is noticeably lighter and thinner than the previous generation MacBook Pros, and the screen is absolutely incredible. Carrying around a tiny adapter for the odd chance I'll use ethernet wasn't that big of an issue for me.

Oh boo hoo, none of these laptops reach a screen quality as the retina and sure enough do not contain the same type of build that the Macbook does. The way they have the motherboard, fans, and everything inside that little runt is just beautiful. I respect them because they have ways to minify ALL of their products and make work so much better.

Apple already sell a 1Gb Ethernet to Thunderbolt adapter for $29. It's tiny and easy to put in your pocket. I'm sure if people need one they can get that.

Not sure why people are complaining about the lack of the ethernet port. If you can afford the cost of the laptop itself and need ethernet, then I'm pretty sure you can afford another $29. I can't say I've ever used that port on my laptop in the 4 years I've had it. And I'm sure most people are the same way.
