Here's What Windows 8 Would Look Like Without Metro

Recommended Posts

Okay, so this thread is for those of you that haven't had a chance to try and turn off Metro in Windows 8 Developer Preview. Well, basically, in Windows 8 Developer Preview, it was possible to completely turn off Metro in. What you got was basically a faster and snappier version of Windows 7 with a refined Aero Glass UI.

This video compares what changed when Metro was turned off.

Note: this hack is no longer possible with current releases of Windows 8, sorry.

For everyone who wants Windows 8 without Metro this is by far the best solution:

No it really isn't as you don't get any of the "under the hood" improvements that are brought to Windows 8.

Getting sick of people saying "just stick with Windows 7 then"

For everyone who wants Windows 8 without Metro this is by far the best solution:

Wow, that is a nice wallpaper. Do you know where I can get it?

So basically as much as people hate Metro, it does indeed look much better

Do you mean the metro UI looks better than Aero? I agree, but I think it is a matter of opinion.

If you want Windows 8's under the hood improvements you better start dealing with Metro as well. If you can't then there's not much of an alternative but to stick with Window 7 or switch to another operating system altogether. It's called facing reality. You're getting sick of hearing this is though luck?

It would have just been nice if Microsoft listened to people that want a choice.

I wouldn't say either of them had to be mutually exclusive.

I'm just hoping a pro/enterprise version won't have the Metro start screen.

If Microsoft listened to people, XP will be still on sale.

Neither am I. Fact is however that Microsoft made this decision and in the end there's little anyone can do about it. That is except for simply not buying their product.

We'd still be on Windows XP.

You realise there is a difference though, right? XP might not be officially sold anymore, but if someone wants to install it they can. They have that choice.

With Windows 8, people were given the choice of turning Metro on or off - granted, via a hack - and then Microsoft went and removed that choice.

No. There is no difference. You don't get a choice of XP or 7 when buying Windows anymore. There were people who hated(probably still hate see:xpclient) XYZ about Vista/7. No difference whatsoever.

I am sure there were couple of upset people who "hated" removal of classic start menu in 7.

Are you saying that it is impossible to install Windows XP now? Last time I checked (which was this morning at work) I found that I could install Windows XP on any of our computers.

This is my point. While it may not come as standard on a computer anymore, there is still the choice to install Windows XP or not. However, there is no longer a choice with Metro, but there was one before.

If it was not for Tablet, we would probably not be dealing with a Win 8 Start Screen. MS moved in this direction for touch device, that's all there is to it.

What if Win XP or Win 7 are still good enough for "the people"? This is only bad because MS is not making enough money, so they have to push out new version of Windows/Office. It's the cash cow of MS...
