Aero-Glass Effect on Windows 8 RTM, by Re-instating the Aero Source Codes

Recommended Posts

We know aero-glass effects had been removed from win8RTM, some guys managed to get "full transparency" by the "high-contrast theme trick"; of course, it is just not satisfactory.

Some Time ago, a MS China guy said he would try to bring aero-glass back to win8RTM, by adding back the source codes. It seems he was successful in this task, and he said that he would upload the install files within next week.

For guys who missed aero-glass, they just have to wait a bit longer. :)

(Notice he used build 8888 for his test runs)

Interesting, if this turns out to be true and works without borking the system for some odd reason I might do this. I'll see if I can get used to the default (with my own color choice ofc) or not. Heck, I'll wait and see what types of themes/skins others come up with that could be better options as well.

Even without glass though, if the colors are too much you can just tone them down in intensity. That's what I plan to do at the start with a nice green color.

And you know what will happen-- more than likely -- once Microsoft hears about this... an update that mysteriously removes it or an update that causes it not to work or BSOD.

I doubt it. They never bothered to patch uxtheme.dll back in WinXP.

The only type of change MS will try to block is you easily sideloading metro apps and bypassing the windows store. At this point anyways, I think later on they could open up the restrictions more.

And you know what will happen-- more than likely -- once Microsoft hears about this... an update that mysteriously removes it or an update that causes it not to work or BSOD.

I think MS would just take it as a skin or add-on(like those start-orb apps) and wouldhn't take any action against it.

But with every service pack -- That file was replaced or with some updates...

Yes, but that was to update it, not just to un-patch it AFAIK.

Why would MS care about what you do with your system, as long as it's not dangerous or illegal?

now just rounded corners. too sharp at the edges looks unpolished.

I completely disagree. I've always hated rounded corners, much prefer square windows. One of the reasons I liked the classic Windows theme.

Me too. I always wanted to modify default theme to square corners, rounded corners look really bad at these resolutions.

high res rounded corners shouldnt be too gpu intensive. an option will be good who prefer high res rounded corners.

Awesome! This + a nice theme with rounded corners (yet to see any) and Start 8 means Windows 8 is pretty nice, and retains the ability to use Metro applications.

The best of Windows 7 and 8 combined.

"Failed" implies Microsoft tried implementing Aero Glass in Windows 8 but couldn't get it to work. Which wasn't the case.

Failed in their horrible design. But I agree, they didn't even try.

False. Why do people think that because MS removes their OWN CODE will kill OTHERS'?!

It won't happen. That's part of beiing Windows: cusotmization.

And most importantly, you've paid for it!

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
