Out of nowhere, all the apps which I downloaded from the Windows Store just stopped working, with the worst error message in the world (it sheds no light at all)

Removing the app and installing it again fixes whatever the problem is, but if this happens frequently, I'm not exactly going to want to keep removing all my downloaded apps, only to reinstall them again..

Any ideas for the cause of this and maybe a fix?

Thanks.

Have you tried to edit any of the files in the App folder?

Noticed this a few times now my self I think its a bug check your settings for your account in the store it seems to happen when your machines profile is removed. did some messing about with this to clean up a few previous installs from my account

Indeed - you're limited to a set number of machines, at which point the store will start invalidating licenses on other computers. If you've installed Windows 8 a number of times throughout the last year or so, you might want to do as Reaper mentioned and make sure you've cleaned up your Microsoft account and leave only the active Win8 installs there.
