efi or bios (GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3)?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm a bit confused. I got a GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (rev. 1.3) motherboard.

A few months ago I updated my bios (version F12) to UEFI BIOS.. (version U1h)

So am I now on EFI mode or legacy BIOS mode?

The reason I am asking is that I want to install ubuntu alongside my win8 install, and in the ubuntu documentation I read this:

Case when Ubuntu must be installed in EFI mode

Having a PC with EFI firmware does not mean that you need to install Ubuntu in EFI mode. What is important is below:

  • if the other systems (Windows Vista/7/8, GNU/Linux...) of your computer are installed in EFI mode, then you must install Ubuntu in EFI mode too.
  • if the other systems (Windows, GNU/Linux...) of your computer are installed in Legacy (not-EFI) mode, then you must install Ubuntu in Legacy mode too. Eg if your computer is old (<2010), is 32bits, or was sold with a pre-installed Windows XP.
  • if Ubuntu is the only operating system on your computer, then it does not matter, you can install Ubuntu in EFI mode or not.

And what is it, EFI or UEFI?

Ps, im on windows 8 64bits.

Why don't you use Wubi? It installs Ubuntu as a Windows program and you don't have to worry about boot configuration.

Anyways it doesn't matter if it's UEFI or not, I have tried both configuration and it works fine. (Desktop is UEFI and laptop is legacy bios and windows 8 64 bit on both computers)

If for some reason something goes wrong though you can use https://help.ubuntu....ity/Boot-Repair, it works 100% of the time and hasn't failed me ever.

And technically you have UEFI, not EFI.
