Microsoft has announced a new Windows backup utility for businesses. Called "Windows Backup for Organizations," it is aimed at simplifying data on Windows 10 and 11 PCs and restoring it on Microsoft Entra-joined devices. Microsoft also pitches Windows Backup for Organization as a convenient tool to help businesses leave Windows 10 behind once it reaches the end of mainstream support on October 14, 2025.
Windows Backup for Organizations is not a completely new thing. The company announced it at Ignite 2024, and now, the tool is available as a limited public preview. Microsoft says it helps companies reset their devices and recover new ones with reduced troubleshooting and minimized downtime, and transition from Windows 10 to 11 more easily. New devices can be deployed faster, with a familiar environment and Windows settings pre-applied. Of course, this also works when moving data between Windows 11 PCs, not just from Windows 10 to 11.
Windows Backup for Organizations is currently in a limited preview with the following requirements:
| Backup | Restore |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Entra-joined or Entra hybrid-joined device A supported version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 | Windows 11 version 22H2 and newer |
Eligible organizations can sign up for the preview using this form.
Alongside the announcement, Microsoft reminded that companies that cannot move from Windows 10 to 11 just yet can opt for the Extended Security Updates program, which, for the first time, is also available for regular consumers. You can read more about Windows Backup for Organizations here.
In addition to providing businesses with a new backup tool, Microsoft is also improving the Windows Backup app for regular customers with more features that make transferring settings and files from one PC to another much easier.
