BT introducing bandwitdh limits?

It seems as though BT are deciding to reduce their ADSL cost by ?2 a month....but with a catch....they are introducing bandwidth restrictions.....

BT announced on Wednesday that it is slashing its retail broadband prices by as much as ?10 per month, but setting tighter limits on how much data its users will be able to download.......

......BT is also bringing in new limits on how much its customers can use their broadband connections for. Customers using a 512Kbps connection will now only be permitted to download 15 gigabytes of data a month. Those using the 1Mbps service will be limited to 30GB per month.

I do not know how valid this claim is or whether it is set in stone, and there will be some who welcome this news (because of reduced monthly fees), but for some like myself this can only be bad, because although I'm not hardcore downloader I still enjoy the freedom BT have given until now to download us much as one wishes (leaving open possibilites to host small servers and downloading open source programs).

I have already been rather annoyed how BT have refused to up their speeds like many other ISPs in England, but I have always justified this by the fact that they have had no bandwidth restrictions.......all I can hope is that this is a mere rumour, because if it isn't I may just switch ISPs despite being a BT customer for as long as I can really remember

What are your thoughts? I hope I am not the only one annoyed by this news

Thats why i changed my lines to Kingston Communications & got Karoo RapidTime Stream 1000, 1mbit/s ?37 a month. NO LIMITS.

PlusNet, my ISP, offer a service similar to this (various bandwidth limits) but it costs bugger all. The service I'm on (their traditional ADSL Home 512 package) is still pittance at ?22/month with no limit... There are a couple of cheaper services around but it's difficult to get moreexpensive> than BT;))

I live in an apartment with four other people on a wireless router.

We'll reach 30 gb easily. One's a tech student, I manage my own site, and BT is ****ing me off!

I would switch but no other service is available in the area!

quick edit: I pay up to 60pounds (including some UNMENTIONED fee's a month)

Note to the wise there.

Don't do anything too hasty guys, it mgiht be only a rumour, I have found quite a few other sites saying the same thing, but just wait for BT to announce something properly

Well I've been reading about this on BT's site for a while, and Freeserve (Wanadoo) are having the same caps in place for their services. So its probably going to be effective quite soon.

As we're unable to get broadband where I live until 22nd July ( I cant wait :D ), I've still got some time to look around, so what would you guys reckon is the best possible ADSL provider in terms of money and d/l caps in Northern Ireland?

They are introducing a 15Gb cap per month for 512Mb/s and a 30Gb cap for 1Mb/s

Comes into effect Jan 2005

Doesn't bother too much atm, will go with someone else when I move out into a place of my own though

LOL, sorry bout that, I was going to make it clearer, but I had (wrongly) assumed that most would recognise BT as the service procider......fo course it stands for British Telecom.....hence only people from Britain would really know what it is <doh> :p

Over priced, capped up, low speed ****ing ****!

I'm beginning to get ****ed off with Telewest as I'm getting routing issues more often, AND the cable box downstairs for T.V is dying... AND some of the channels go down on a regular basis, or video / sound freezes and goes jerky.

BT is gonna introduce a limit, their prices are ****ing rediculous, Telewest is getting stupid and I have heard something bad about Bulldog from a friend (he used it, they ****** up).

****ing want to go to America, Optimum Online 10/1 internet with no limits. Now thats the kinda **** I'm talking about, yo!

That sucks for all you on BT's ADSL service (unless ya strapped for cash dont mind loseing ya freedom etc) I'm on Blueyonder and it has no limits and packages from 56K to 3MB at preety good price's - If any of you want to switch to another ISP I suggest you give Blueyonder a look. (all there modems are fitted with both USB and Earthnet, great for Mac users / Routers) :p
