It's on Software Update Now.

The Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update (Delta) updates Mac OS X 10.4.2 to version 10.4.3. (If you are updating from Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.4.1 to 10.4.3, see this article instead.)

Important: Please read before installing.

You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you've modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)

The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.

If issues occur during installation?for example, Software Update quits unexpectedly?please see this article.

Installation

You have two ways to update to Mac OS X 10.4.3: Use Software Update or the standalone installer. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.

Automatic Software Update

Software Update, located in System Preferences, can automatically download the latest Apple software. (Software Update might have linked you to this article to learn more about the update.)

Software Update notes:

The update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update.

Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to run Software Update more than once to get all available updates.

Standalone installer

Two versions of the installer (Delta and Combo, described below) are available from Apple Downloads as standalone updates. After you download an update, you can use it to update your computer without being connected to the Internet.

The Delta Update installer (described here) updates Mac OS X 10.4.2 to 10.4.3.

The Combo Update installer (described in this article) updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, or 10.4.2 to 10.4.3 .

The standalone installer, particularly the Combo Update, is useful if you have multiple computers to update and only want to download the update once.

Improvements

This update offers many improvements, including:

Finder and Spotlight

Improves responsiveness during Spotlight searches in the Finder.

Spotlight comments entered in the Finder are now preserved when using iDisk syncing.

Get Info windows correctly display non-Roman language versions and copyright strings.

Permissions for items inside packages are now correctly set when applying permission changes to enclosed items in the Finder Info window.

Items copied into a Drop Box have permissions set correctly.

Addresses an issue in which Spotlight cannot find a file after using iPhoto to rename it if the filename originally contained an ampersand (&).

The Spotlight image indexer now uses the "Software" TIFF property to support graphics rendering and image editing applications that use this property.

Safari, Internet, and networking

Safari can now pass the "Acid2" test.

Improves compatibility of Safari with many webcams.

Improves the handling of Hebrew and Arabic text in Safari and Mail.

Improves compatibility for OpenGL-accelerated Macromedia Shockwave 3D webpage content when using Safari.

Addresses an issue in which an SMB volume might not mount again after it's unmounted.

Addresses some issues in which the Finder might not be able to connect to an SMB volume.

Bluetooth Setup Assistant now lets you toggle the Modem menu extra on or off (you can also use System Preferences).

Resolves an issue in which Internet Connect wouldn't connect to a dial-up ISP if the account password contained a double-quote (") character.

Improves compatibility with Squid proxy servers.

Syncing

With this update, you no longer need to store Address Book contact URLs in the Notes field when syncing with .Mac.

Mac sync error alerts now provide a better description of the issue (for more details about a .Mac sync error, see the dotmacsync.log file).

Allows your Address Book contacts that are organized in subgroups to be synced to an iPod using iTunes.

Mail

Addresses an issue in which Mail might prompt you to download items attached to an IMAP email message more than once.

In the Fonts & Colors preferences in Mail, you can now customize the font used in the list of Mailbox names.

Smart Mailboxes that use "Entire Message Contains" and another criteria with the "any" qualifier now work as expected.

Smart Groups of addresses can now be dragged from Address Book to a message's To, Cc, or Bcc field.

The number of messages in a Smart Mailbox are now displayed in the title bar.

Pressing Tab while composing a Mail message now inserts a tab character, instead of four spaces.

Accounts created in Mail after installing this update will avoid an issue in which .Mac mail could not be sent if the Internet Service Provider blocks port 25.

Reduces the amount of blank lines Mail might insert into a message when forwarding or replying to it.

Addresses an issue in which some Mail rules could be lost or duplicated after a .Mac sync.

Addresses in the "To:", "Cc:", "Bcc:" fields, as well as the Accounts pop-up menu, no longer appear in red if the address is in a different lettercase than what is entered in the "Mark addresses not in the domain" field; for example, "[email protected]" will no longer be marked in red if the "Mark addresses not in the domain" field contains "mac.com."

Searches of "All Mailboxes" can now, optionally, include items from Junk and Trash.

Resolves an issue in which meeting requests sent from Microsoft Outlook to an Exchange account in Mail might not appear.

iChat

iChat preferences now allow you to display emoticons (such as a smiley face) as text (such as " :-) ") instead of as a graphic.

What, by 18 minutes - and that's way ahead.

Anyways...the more updates in a single patch the better (and at least it's not 100 MB for minor updates like Nero).

They've disabled Quartz 2D Extreme, according to the release notes. Whether this means you can't turn it on via the Terminal command anymore, I'll have to see, but its a little odd since the feature is already disabled by default and clearly unsupported.

Other than that, pretty nice update. Having Mail use real tab characters instead of spaces now makes me happy.

After installing the combo update, and restarted, my imac wouldn't boot anymore, I got a blinking macos icon with a question mark, I boot it up with the tiger cd and tried repair disk, and it gave me "The underlying task reported failure on exit."

Anyone know if my hdd just died or something?

    • Meh, just another dongle-haven downgrade compared to my Surface Pro 7+. Whenever I decide to upgrade in the next decade or so, it certainly won't be another microslop Surface with this enshitification trend they've been having after the Surface Pro 7+. Hopefully a future generation of the Framework 12 will be a real upgrade...
    • This could exactly be how our Sun ends but it's not as simple by Sayan Sen Image by Drew Rae via Pexels An international team led by Université de Montréal (University of Montreal) PhD student Érika Le Bourdais has found that the ancient white dwarf star LSPM J0207+3331 is still pulling in planetary debris, even though it has been cooling for about three billion years. White dwarfs are dense, Earth-sized stellar remnants left behind when Sun-like stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and shed their outer layers. The star, located 145 light-years away in the constellation Triangulum, is the oldest and coldest white dwarf known to have a surrounding disk of dust. The star was first spotted in 2019 by a citizen scientist through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project. Its cool temperature immediately suggested that it was very old, since white dwarfs gradually lose heat over time. Using the W. M. Keck telescopes in Hawaii, astronomers later confirmed that the star shows infrared signals consistent with dust rings formed by asteroids breaking apart under its strong gravity. Such infrared excesses occur when a star emits more infrared light than expected, often because warm dust surrounding it absorbs and re-radiates energy. “This discovery challenges our understanding of planetary system evolution,” said Le Bourdais. “The fact that we still see planetary debris being accreted three billion years after the star became a white dwarf suggests that asteroids, comets, and even planets can remain in orbit around these stars for a very long time.” Spectroscopic analysis—a technique that studies light to identify the chemical elements present in an object—revealed thirteen heavy elements in the star’s atmosphere: sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, calcium, titanium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and strontium. Normally, heavy elements sink quickly in hydrogen-rich white dwarfs, making them hard to detect. “We expected to see only a few elements, but we found dozens!” explained Le Bourdais. The research paper adds more detail. The absence of carbon features suggests the debris came from a carbon-volatile-depleted source. The abundance pattern shows slight deficits of magnesium and silicon compared to iron but otherwise resembles Earth-like material. This points to a differentiated rocky body—one whose materials have separated into distinct layers such as a metallic core and rocky mantle—with a metallic core fraction higher than Earth’s. In other words, the star is accreting the remains of a large rocky object, similar in structure to Earth or the asteroid Vesta. “White dwarfs offer one of the only ways we can directly measure the composition of exoplanets,” said Patrick Dufour, co-author and professor at Université de Montréal. “When planetary debris come too close, they are torn apart by the star’s gravity and end up polluting its atmosphere, leaving a detailed chemical fingerprint of its composition.” The team also detected weak Ca II H & K line core emission, making this only the second known isolated polluted white dwarf to show this feature. These are specific spectral signatures produced by ionised calcium and can indicate unusual physical activity in a star’s upper atmosphere. The finding suggests that extra physical processes may be happening in or above the star’s upper atmosphere. The study stresses the importance of including heavy elements in model atmosphere calculations, since leaving them out can distort the inferred structure and lead to inaccurate stellar parameters. Earlier work suggested the star’s infrared excess came from two dust rings. The new analysis shows that a single silicate dust disk—a ring composed largely of rock-forming minerals rich in silicon and oxygen—can explain the observed signal at 11.6 μm, simplifying the picture of the system’s structure. The question of how debris ended up falling into the star so late remains open. One idea is that giant planets in the system slowly destabilised smaller bodies over billions of years. Another possibility is that a passing star disturbed the orbits of debris. “Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope or archival data found in the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission could help distinguish between a planetary rearrangement and the gravitational effect of a close stellar encounter,” said John Debes, co-author and researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Dufour noted that hydrogen-rich white dwarfs are the most common type, and the coolest among them are the oldest stars in the galaxy. “We didn't have the habit of looking for signs of accretion in them. This unique case motivates us to expand our search to more of these stars.” The findings show that even after billions of years, planetary systems can remain active and complex. Substantial accretion events—the gradual accumulation of surrounding material onto a celestial object—can still occur long after a star’s death, offering a rare window into the composition and fate of distant worlds.
