News of the World to close amid phone hacking scandal

Recommended Posts

This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

Sky News said proceeds from the last edition would go to good causes.

Downing Street said it had no role or involvement in the decision.

In a statement made to staff, Mr Murdoch said the good things the News of the World does "have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong - indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company".

"The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself."

He went on: "In 2006, the police focused their investigations on two men. Both went to jail. But the News of the World and News International failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing that occurred without conscience or legitimate purpose.

"Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued.

"As a result, the News of the World and News International wrongly maintained that these issues were confined to one reporter.

"We now have voluntarily given evidence to the police that I believe will prove that this was untrue and those who acted wrongly will have to face the consequences. This was not the only fault.

"The paper made statements to Parliament without being in the full possession of the facts. This was wrong."

Wow, thought they'd just hang it out. However most of the advertisers dropped out immediately after the recent revalations.

Probably the Sun will end up going 7 days, eventually.

Also most of the people in charge at the time, are now good friends with David Cameron.

I wonder if we'll see more papers getting named and shamed, as I doubt the NoW were the only ones hacking voicemails.

With noted advertisers no longer providing funding, and the newspaper looking at huge fines - it would not have been cost effective to print (if you work in that industry, you'll know how hard nespaper sales are these days).

I want to say good riddance, the newspaper was nothing more than sensationalist headlines and adverts for softcore porn. But a lot of people will have worked there, and they may now be facing redundancy :(

The world has become a better place. Just need The Sun and Daily Mail to crash and burn and maybe journalism will receive the saving grace it has needed for years. Though the mail will probably try to convince everyone that not reading newspapers give us cancer, or something.

GOOD, will not be missed

However they should still not be allowed to get away with it by just dissolving the company

It won't! Those responsible will still be brought to justice!

It's just a management stunt - they'll just rebrand it 'The Sun on Sunday', whose domain names were bought the other day.

Excellent News for the World !

We can live happily without that pathetic waste of paper.

why? did they hold a gun to your head and ask you buy the paper?

I swear I must be the only person on the internet who actually likes the Sun.

The BBC have got a "Live" website going - Here.

They have mentioned integrating the NotW and the Sun before, so the domains names might have been a coincidence, but must have helped in the decision to shut down the paper. Also Rebecca Brooks should get sacked over this.

Good riddance... although I'm sure this only happened to remove the scandal from the public eye while decissions are being made regarding Murdoch's take over of BSkyB.

She should do the decent thing and resign.

The sun's only real saving grace was Page 3... once Nuts came along it was like "...what's the point of The Sun again?"

What a loss to the world this will be

There's talk of The Sun becoming a 7-day paper to replace this so some will be transferred over to there and probs a few others to other News Corp Organizations.

Normally I would agree with your sentiment because it's never good to see people lose their jobs. However, I'll make an exception this time because these people all deserve to be out of work and some of them belong in gaol.

The crimes and corruption they've committed and their abuse of press freedoms have left this country with a massive political crisis that involves the press, the political class and the police. It looks like the press will now have to be regulated to protect us from further abuses which is hardly a good thing in a free society and it's all down to the cavalier attitude of Murdoch and his cronies.

And the worst thing about all of this is that those scumbag NoW journalists like Paul McMullan don't think they've done anything wrong. See what he had to say in this discussion on Channel 4 news last night.

And yet where's the police investigation? If I was caught hacking you can be sure that the police would be around as quickly as possible to arrest me, they'd confiscate all my equipment and forensics would go through it with a fine tooth comb to find evidence to use against me. What happens when News Corp journalists are accused of the same thing? Not a damned thing. The police have been sitting on evidence of hacking for 5 years now and they've refused to investigate. They new that News of the World journalists were targeting their own detectives to try and disrupt murder investigations into NoW staff and still they did nothing. The level of corruption in the Met is massive and an independent anti-corruption investigation is needed immediately. The Met can't be trusted to investigate themselves, the IPCC have proven time and time again that they aren't independent or interested in holding the police to account so a new body that doesn't include police may be needed.

In the meantime, we've got the Prime Minister (who ranks Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson as personal friends) deciding what sort of inquiries will be held. He, and any other politician who's ever had anything to do with News International need to step aside and stay as far away from this as possible. The terms of reference for any inquiry needs to be drawn up by someone credible preferably an independent cross-party parliamentary committee led by MPs like Tom Watson who have the guts to stand up to Murdoch.

The Press Complaints Commission has proven itself to be useless and needs to be disbanded. Self-regulation of the press is proven to have failed and only way that the public can have any faith in the media is for to have an ombudsman appointed to licence and regulate the media.

Finally, News Corp need to be hobbled once and for all. They have far too much power already in this country and shouldn't be able to peddle any more of their filth. That means that BSkyB needs to be made off-limits for starters and some sort of cross-media ownership laws need to be introduced to prevent any one company controlling to many different news sources. Requiring media proprietors to actually be citizens of this country would also be a good start.

Anyone who's disgusted to hear that News Corp have been paying police or hacking into the phones of the victims of crimes or aiding and abetting murderers should boycott News Corp papers including The Sun, The Times and especially this final edition of The News of The World.

Yes, there's a massive difference between whistleblowing and hacking into the phones and voicemail accounts of private citizens.

For years Rupert Murdoch tried to argue that media consolidation was not harmful to society as a whole, but this affair seems to put the lie to that: as Murdoch consolidated, his remaining outlets became more and more powerful. One very distressing allegation suggests that Scotland Yard's media liason didn't want to jeopardize relations with News of the World, and possibly interfered with an investigation.

hacking into phones for exposing corruption ? i dont know the story but i'm sure NOW had an angle. you think they randomly picked a private citizen and started tapping his/her phone?

again, wasn't wikileaks in bed with hackers (Manning ?) who got them the cables and info ?

Whilst I am glad that the paper is now gone, I hate most things that Murdoch is involved in, you are wrong on this point! It has already been stated many times since this was announced that, with the exception of one or two, none of the current staff worked for the paper when all the hacking took place. So the 200 staff that are about to be made redundant are innocent people.

This is about hacking into phones of murder victims and their family members, and now dead soldiers aswell.

What they done is despicable and there is no argument to defend them.
