Buying new headphones.

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I have my current headphones for a couple years and I have decided it is time for an upgrade, I have already spent a few hours of research and have decided I am going with a pair of Ultrasone PRO 900s http://www.ultrasone.com/index.php/en/products/pro-900.html

I will be using a Apple iPod Classic 160GB (7th Gen) with them along with an LOD and portable amplifier. However, I am unsure of which amplifier to get. I initially found the e11 by fiio http://www.fiio.com.cn/product/index.aspx?ID=24&MenuID=020301

Then I did some more research and realized the quality of cMoy by JDS Labs was better http://www.jdslabs.com/products.php?page=cmoy

Finally I found this: http://www.headstage.com/The-Arrow-Amp/Preorder-of-Headstage-Arrow-12HE-4G::10144.html

And although I believe the one by headstage to be the best... it is $300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with the PRO 900s and could give me some personal advice as to what amplifier would be a good choice for them.

Until then I will be looking for more reviews.

Thanks!

The Ultrasones are low impedance (40 ohms) and relatively sensitive (97 dB) so they don't require much to drive them. The importance of an amp is greatly exaggerated by 'audiophiles', I would try them without a separate amp first and go with an amp only if that doesn't sound acceptable.

For portable setup I would go with something cheap and decent like fiio E5, http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/03/fiio-e5-headphone-amp.html

Thanks very much for your honest response, and you are right, I was being told on other audiophile forums that it was a must.

They should ship out tomorrow!
