What makes Android better?

Recommended Posts

Android has visual voicemail...through Google voice, or many carriers support it too (like Verizon)

Not all phones are supported by the carriers. AT&T doesn't support it for SGS2 and it's the latest phone. Google Voice has other problems. This needs to be a built in feature.

Apart from this, pretty much everything makes Android better.

What makes Android worthwhile is that for £100, I can get a smartphone which works, and for another 20 minutes of my time, I can upgrade it to Gingerbread, and overclock it beyond most devices at the £200 mark, and then have the ability to run flash videos on it and the majority of games available. That's what makes it better for budget buyer like myself.

Android allows you to modify your OS experience and for me it makes it personal. There maybe a few minor things than IOS achieves through regulation but in my opinion its a shame that such a solid OS should be held back. Im all for people keeping a well secured locked down system if thats what they need, but when you want to be a bit adventurous IOS cant compete without crossing way too many jail broken security barriers. I think its time Apple gave people a choice - The full Apple IOS secure(ish) guarantee Vs the guarantee of a Solid IOS device that may encounter something its never seen before but will soon adapt because it has a decent company behind it. Id go for the exploration every time.

The Android keyboard isn't any better dude. I can tell you that every time I typed on the Inspire keyboard I made so many mistakes it wasn't funny, yet on the iPhone keyboard, although is smaller, it seems more accurate. I don't misspell words or anything like that. I type and everything comes out perfect.

</p>You clearly weren't reading. You can replace the keyboard on Android entirely with something else, such as Swype.

Just my 2 cents which echoes what others are saying: more customizable, flashing custom roms ala AOSP, Sense (2/2.1/3/3.5...), MIUI, TONS of free stuff from live wallpapers to hear-rate monitors and top-shelf games, no middle man needed like iTunes to xfer over music, movies, files etc. WIDE variety of devices to choose from, Swype for input or amazing voice input capability via Google.

I'm a former iPhone and WM user. After running several droid devices, the current being my SGS2, I can truthfully say there isn't anything Apple could do to the iPhone to ever make me want to run one again.

I couldn't care less about custom ROMs, I'm pretty satisfied with the stock one on the Nexus S (then again is a Nexus so I have vanilla Android).

Most things I do with Android I could likely do the same with other phones (and then some, eg. I'd like to be able to connect to Cisco VPNs, which you can do on iOS but not Android, at least as of 2.3.6).

One thing that sets Android apart from iOS and WP7 is that I can be certain that I can plug the phone to any computer and it'll just work: no extra drivers, no vendor specific software suites to sync the media libraries... zero limitations to manage my files.

Other than that it's all just about personal preferences: WP7's tile layout looks ugly, and iOS design isn't attractive enough to make me ditch Android and accept iPhone's shortcomings.

A problem for me is that some fans of android are very vocal in their support of android (in a bad way) and seem to feel the need to push their opinions of it others.

and iOS users don't  ? If you guys don't go around calling Android sucks, nobody would bash your toys. It goes both ways.

Find where I've bashed Android. I find the majority is iPad basher from most people who bear a Apple grudge, so, please don't pull you lot started it first card as it doesn't wash. I have both a iPad and a Transformer

Thank god for iPads, it showed there is a market for such devices. I would love to have a Windows 8 tablet with an iPad form factor, got a Macbook Pro, and an android phone, but I think for tablets, Windows8 seems the best =)

I'm going to wait till windows 8 is out before making a judgement. What the iPad and after that the Android did is give tablets not only the ability to be simple consumer devices but also hassle free email/web/photo browsers with none of the hassles or maintenance of real computers. Great for people who don't want to be apply security updates, wonder why it breaks everytime its picked up with dll errors or have to wait 10 minutes to boot up and settle down. It was great for the mums and dads who just wanted web and email and not having to get its OS fixed every 5 minutes (exaggerations I know before someone says anything). I'm wondering if windows 8 is going to be going back to the old tablets ways and bring the old associated baggage back across with it.

iOS fans may be excited about the platform they have chosen and are vocal about it. A few (not all) overly vocal Android fans seem to push the reasoning that I should hate Apple and therefore go with Android. I haven't seen anyone going around saying I should hate Android. So that is a big reason why I'm turned off by Android. I dislike people trying to push me to an extreme point of view (hate).

Edit: Again, very few Android fans push this point of view, but the few that do turn me off to the platform. Maybe that is bad on me for not looking at the larger picture and taking people's opinion with a grain of salt.

Yeah, totally a personal pref thing. Yesterday my G2 had Sense 3.5, today stock AOSP Android. When I first got my HTC HD2, I wanted a break from iPhone for a bit. That's where I found out about flashing and for the price of a WM-based HD2, the glory of custom roms let me run any Android available, WP7 as well as current and branched (2 years ago now) WM 6.5.x builds.

Android lets me totally geek out on that $500 piece of hardware so I guess that's a huge plus in my book, but alas like you say - it's not everyone's cup of tea. My last iPhone just sits in the closet, unlocked and jailbroken - oh joy.

Let me clear up some things that were brought up here.

1. Galaxy S, and newer of Samsung will get ICS.

2. Upgrading firmwares you do not have to wait until your carrier pushes it for you, I know with Galaxy S, and Galaxy S II I don't remember the last time I used KIES to update. That being said also, AS long as you use a Samsung Firmware, even if your carrier does not push it. You are not voiding your warranty at all and you do not need to root to do so. If you want a custom rom yes you need to root, which is very easy.

3. Each phone has their bonuses. I have noticed that even some programs for the iphone you have to pay for, some are free for android.(Why I have nooo idea.)

One thing I do have to say I do like with android, I can just throw in different Size sd cards for more storage etc.

If your going for Android.

Don't even get a Galaxy Nexus, just hold out till first quarter 2012, and get yourself a Galaxy S3 with the 12mp camera and the 1.8 dual core processor, 2 gig of ram and 4.6 screen :D

Yeah and with what? 3 hours of talk time?

Do you have any idea how much battery all that power is going to suck down?

Nah, the iPad didn't show there was a market for such devices, the iPad showed us the price point that consumers were willing to buy them at. Realistically, tablets aren't that useful, they're just toys (except for businesses or artists, who could justify spending $2,000+ on Tablet PCs) so people really aren't willing to spend more than $500 on a toy.

Galaxy SII has some pretty awesome talk time. Android manufacturers have figured out what size batteries they need to use to get good performance, so you'll likely see them increasing specs at a slower rate as the batteries can support it.

i have had both android and iPhone, i like the iPhone cause of the apps and the screen, and media! iTunes works for me, never had a issue, dont understand people problems with it. I do like android cause you can do with it as your like (like install custom roms) but i found the battery life on android not the greatest (but this could be cause of the phone i had) both have to ups and down and both work! atm i have iPhone4 and enjoy it alot. i did love the way could backup all my sms and contacts onto my gmail account, that was great! (on android) but for now the iPhone is working for me. The apps for android are abit of a worry for me, due to the amount of malware that has been released in the past. with iTunes i know that they are looked over alot! Im interested in trying a windows phone. Im no fanboy i like technology and as such ill go out and buy the latests and greatest from all markets!

I respect iOS in its own way. What irritates Android users (or just me) the most is how Apple fanbois go out of their way find negatives and claim that it their iPhone is so much better because of it. In reality, iPhone has it's own set of negatives, especially now that the 4S is not longer the best in terms of hardware. Take that one article by engadget claiming that the Google Nexus screen is crap just because is not Super AMOLED Plus. Anyone who has used the Nexus, or an SGS2 that has a comparable screen, would be blown away by that screen regardless of what screen pixel tech is used.

The iPads simply has no competition and most of the hate towards it is directly from people who wouldn't mind owning one but scorn Apple for making it so expensive. For $500, I would rather get an ASUS Transformer to dually function as a tablet and laptop over single purpose iPad.

the only thing letting android tablets down is the market place

    • Less powerful than a PS5 at twice the price! I wonder if they use that for marketing? Totally DoA.

    • How does it compare to the "SeeStar S30 Pro" and the "Vespera PRO 2"?
    • Indeed. And note that those units are MUCH cheaper than this new Steam Machine...ahem.
