Orange text-ads

It's 3 orange words per page. Is that really too much?

Just so you all know. They will be implemented on the main page. Probably 5 words per page. I'm looking into a way to disable the links per user.

if more link mean more income for neowin, make it the maximum links allowed, I find absolutely no problem on those text ADs and I actually like them, some oranage to relief my eyestress when reading a long article, and I like orange :D :D

Instead of finding out how to disable by user, you should find away to make them work in other browsers other then IE.

Come on people a few banner adds and a few orange words really is not that bad. If the admins wanted to they could start charging fee's. I know of a few forums that if you want to have custom ava or sig you have to pay money. Thats something we can all agree we don't want here on neowin.

I'd pay not to see those text ads, although I'd sooner pay not to see the over powering banner ads. google ads I don't mind for some reason (I do use them myself), I just wish there was some way to change the font size on the goggle stuff.

I have 3 subscriptions to sites I visit daily that removes the ads.

(Oh and I'd pay even more to have the facility to remove the moronic, 2Mb images from people's sigantures on the board - yes I know I can in settings, but I'd pay for that if it wasn't there!)

Redmak, I would recommend finding a way to disable them per group, then utilize the Subscription Manager to sell a premium membership that removes the text link ads for that group. ;)

That would be pointless as anyone who doesn't want them can just block out itxt.vibrantmedia.com in their HOSTS file, thus defeating the purpose. I'd much rather have people donate to Neowin than buy some stupid ad blocking service. Plus, once they add a subscription thing, all the sites just want to block off more and more of the site from non-subscribers. See the problem?

You can also warez software but it doesn't make it right to do it. ;)

I'm just saying that it may be an idea to provide an "ad-free Neowin" for people that are willing to purchase the service. It's not like nobody else has ever done it. :rolleyes:

I'm not saying that "customer only" forums should be created, it would just be a good way for people to get something tangible for their donations which would spur more people into donating. As nice as it would be to think that people are good about giving without any thought of what they may receive in return, it just doesn't work that way for the masses. If they provide a simple service (such as ad removal from the site), they'll realize an increase in "donations". ;)

How is it annoying, it just colours key words, hardly obtrusive. Is it that much of a hassle to you? It shouldnt matter how much, or little, Neowin makes from it. Its their server they can do as they wish. I personally click the links every now and again as it creates revenue to keep this site going, and if your paranoid about it saving cookies etc just use AdAware etc to clean them.

Neowin has to generate revenue to keep ther servers going ie bandwidth etc, with so many members visiting each day etc thats an awful lot of traffic. And at least Neowin arent as in your face with advertising like some sites I could mention, eith pop-ups, pop-unders etc.

Is it just on my system (because of some spyware) or does everyone see this?

On the front page and on some forum messages, it appears that key words like Microsoft and Display get turned in to hot links.

How is this being done and why?

Also in the source of Neowin (at the bottom) I see this:

<style type="text/css">

 	 FONT-STYLE:normal;
 	 FONT-WEIGHT:normal;

 	 BORDER-RIGHT:black 1px solid;
 	 BORDER-TOP:black 1px solid;
 	 BORDER-LEFT:black 1px solid;
 	 BORDER-BOTTOM:black 1px solid;
 	 PADDING:2px;
 	 BACKGROUND-COLOR:lightyellow;
}
</style>
<span id="iTt" class="iTt" style="visibility:hidden;position:absolute;"></span>
