Redmak Administrators Posted October 3, 2003 Administrators Share Posted October 3, 2003 It's 3 orange words per page. Is that really too much? Just so you all know. They will be implemented on the main page. Probably 5 words per page. I'm looking into a way to disable the links per user. xerox
Personally, I prefer these links over banners/popups. Yes they are stupid, and I will never buy anything from these sites, but I will actually click them sometimes and make some money for Neowin! They really deserve it :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1218405 Share on other sites

Come on people a few banner adds and a few orange words really is not that bad. If the admins wanted to they could start charging fee's. I know of a few forums that if you want to have custom ava or sig you have to pay money. Thats something we can all agree we don't want here on neowin. blowdart
I'd pay not to see those text ads, although I'd sooner pay not to see the over powering banner ads. google ads I don't mind for some reason (I do use them myself), I just wish there was some way to change the font size on the goggle stuff. I have 3 subscriptions to sites I visit daily that removes the ads. (Oh and I'd pay even more to have the facility to remove the moronic, 2Mb images from people's sigantures on the board - yes I know I can in settings, but I'd pay for that if it wasn't there!) georgi55
Recently I started getting waht you see on the image, and it only happens on Neowin. Is this Neowin thing or I got some spyware on me? I used spybot and ad-aware and both of them didn't detect anything related to that. georgi55
Thanks, they don't really bother me if I know they are from neowin, there is huge traffic here and it has to be payed somehow. I'd much rather have people donate to Neowin than buy some stupid ad blocking service. Plus, once they add a subscription thing, all the sites just want to block off more and more of the site from non-subscribers. See the problem? You can also warez software but it doesn't make it right to do it. ;) I'm just saying that it may be an idea to provide an "ad-free Neowin" for people that are willing to purchase the service. It's not like nobody else has ever done it. I'm not saying that "customer only" forums should be created, it would just be a good way for people to get something tangible for their donations which would spur more people into donating. As nice as it would be to think that people are good about giving without any thought of what they may receive in return, it just doesn't work that way for the masses. If they provide a simple service (such as ad removal from the site), they'll realize an increase in "donations". ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1226324 Share on other sites

Evizu
ok this is really annoying me now.i mean how much do you at neowin really make from it ? im guessing neowin aims to break even... it has to generate some kind of income in order to pay for the hosting etc Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1228409 Share on other sites
Hypoxiaicon
hey, come on, neowin is FREE. they could charge you for membership if they really wanted too. all it is just some orange links, just dont roll over them with your mouse :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1228417 Share on other sites
+BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted October 6, 2003 Subscriber¹ Share Posted October 6, 2003 How is it annoying, it just colours key words, hardly obtrusive. Is it that much of a hassle to you? It shouldnt matter how much, or little, Neowin makes from it. Its their server they can do as they wish. I personally click the links every now and again as it creates revenue to keep this site going, and if your paranoid about it saving cookies etc just use AdAware etc to clean them. Neowin has to generate revenue to keep ther servers going ie bandwidth etc, with so many members visiting each day etc thats an awful lot of traffic. And at least Neowin arent as in your face with advertising like some sites I could mention, eith pop-ups, pop-unders etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1228419 Share on other sites

John Veteran Posted October 6, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 6, 2003 if it really bothers you that much, you can set IE (and probably firebird, opera, and others too) to ignore the page's colors, but it will make neowin look truly horrendous :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1228429 Share on other sites

SimplyPotatoes
i think neowin should charge 2$ a month id be happy to pay maybe it would keep trolls away but then again people who are tight with money might not pay so sigh, free is what it should be... AshMan
Is it just on my system (because of some spyware) or does everyone see this? On the front page and on some forum messages, it appears that key words like Microsoft and Display get turned in to hot links. How is this being done and why? Also in the source of Neowin (at the bottom) I see this: <style type="text/css"> .iTt{ FONT-SIZE:10px; FONT-STYLE:normal; FONT-WEIGHT:normal; COLOR:black; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica; BORDER-RIGHT:black 1px solid; BORDER-TOP:black 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT:black 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM:black 1px solid; PADDING:2px; BACKGROUND-COLOR:lightyellow; } </style> <span id="iTt" class="iTt" style="visibility:hidden;position:absolute;"></span> <script defer="true" language="javascript" src="https://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/system/liveintellitxt.asp?IPID=132&MK=3&BG=eeeeee&UL=color:FF6D00"></script> <!-- end Vibrant Media IntelliTxt script section --> Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/103781-orange-text-ads/page/2/#findComment-1230859 Share on other sites
