VBR - How?

Recommended Posts

So, I use a program called "GOLDWAVE" to convert my Flac files into mp3 files.

It gives me loads of options, but I am wondering about doing either of the following:

Converting my entire collection to 320 VBR to try and save a bit of space. Is there a program that can do this automatically for me?

Goldwave also gives VBR option, but it has it in a drop down box where I can have it OFF, 0 (high quality) or 10 (low quality). Now the reason I convert to 320 is to have pretty good quality, so which option would I choose here?

Thanks

CBR will use constant number of bits for all frames, thus wasting valuable bits if the material is of low complexity (clean sounds, ambient, silence). However, you can't go wrong with 320 kbit/s CBR in any way. It is maximum possible all-around compatible way.

VBR will use less bits for low complexity material, therefore saving space. Even V0 preset doesn't ever reach 320 kbit/s CBR level but is usually enough for most types of music, listening environment, ears and hardware. Oh, and encoding takes a tad longer.
