AIM Preview (whole new program)

Introducing AIM Preview

Why did the experience change from the AIM I knew before?

The old AIM is like a champion race car: it's received updates and new parts over the years. Sure it ran alright, but it was still in need of an overhaul after many pit stops. The new AIM is like a brand new supercar that has some of the old features and a whole lot more integrated into one sleek ride.

What is message storage?

The new AIM products now store and sync your message history so you won't miss a thing. For now, we will keep track of your messages for two months. We're continually working to save your conversations for you even longer.

What is "off the record" and how does it work?

When you take a conversation off the record, AIM does not store it for you or for the person with whom you're having a conversation. You can take a conversation off the record by clicking in the drop down menu at the top of any 1:1 conversation.

How long am I able to stay off the record?

Any conversation you take off the record will stay off the record for the duration of your conversation. If you sign on, then sign off, the conversation will still be off the record until you choose to take it back on the record.

Does my conversation partner know when I go off the record?

When you have a conversation with someone on the new AIM, they will receive a notification when the chat goes off the record, as well as back on the record.

What happens if I use an older version of AIM sometimes?

Once you start using one of our new AIM products, we will keep the message history of conversations you have on older AIM clients.

eh AIM seemed to of died off when facebook chat and facebook chat integration came out...

I don't know a single person that uses FB over AIM or MSN or Yahoo. So I don't get why people keep saying this.

With the old AIM (AIM 7.5) you could chat with facebook friends with the program. But you can't with this new thing. I don't like it saving my chat history on a server, like Yahoo!. Even images I sent it uploads to AOL's servers. Yet it doesn't give you an option to view the chat history.

Also it's using 96MB of RAM with one IM open. AIM 7.5 uses 15-20MB.

Seems so far no one is interested in this. They should just make a dedicated Facebook client so we can replace all these other programs.

God no! What a horrible idea!

Facebook already has too much junk. One of the things that's killed Facebook for me is no longer having the ability to be "offline" permanently. I prefer being able to contact people when I have time to have a proper conversation. It seems every time I go "offline" in Facebook chat, then check Facebook on my phone, it automatically logs me back in... thanks Facebook. I wish they'd do away with that stupid "Facebook Chat" and go back to being a proper social network site instead of a games/apps/adverts/malware/chat site for underage abusive whingers...

While I never used AIM, I did use ICQ, mIRC (still do occasionally), and MSN. It's good to see even though it might not be the preferred option, they still haven't forgotten about those of us that like privacy, and like being able to chat when we want.

I don't know a single person that uses FB over AIM or MSN or Yahoo. So I don't get why people keep saying this.

Everyone I know uses FB chat exclusively, hell just the other days one of my Teen kids asked what AIM/ICQ were, they've never used any of the old chat programs

    • The better these AI models get, the more this is going to happen. It's gonna turn into government versus government in regards to using proprietary and unavailable security research models to basically find flaws and vulnerabilities in other governments or companies systems. It's basically turning into a cybersecurity arms race. This is actually a good thing. The better AI gets, the more restricted and expensive it's going to become, making it far less mainstream. This is good 👍
    • Crazy. The government fired everyone who was capable of actually understanding this. More security theater. Just checked it is gone from Claude.
