""You cannot create a folder named "con" anywhere on your computer. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened""

That's actually due to the evolution from Dos to Windows as we know it today. con = console . You also cannot name a folder PRN, COM1 - COM9, etc etc. All of which are legacy hardware connections from dos.

Makes perfect sense, "con" along with "aux", "com1" and many others are reserved words in dos, and cannot normally be created in Windows. There are ways to circumvent this though and create such folder names.

source

To say no one at Microsoft could answer why it couldn't be done is stupid though, there is a perfectly valid reason as to why it can't be done (normally....it CAN actually be done though if you really want to do it), and considering it is due to reserved dos words, anyone working on the Windows team should know exactly why it can't be done.

You cannot create a folder named "con" anywhere on your computer. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened

It has a definite reason, and in fact, a folder can be created using that reserved name.

Gone are the days when computers had only CUI OS, that is, Character User InterfaceOperating Systems, like MS-DOS. When I joined my first computer course nine years ago,Windows 95 was ruling. You could see Windows 98 here and there. We were in 8th standard, and working on a computer was like a dream coming true. Microsoft?s Paint Brush was the only known (for us) GUI software and was the greatest means of entertainment. The instructors taught us only MS-DOS commands and how to Shut Down the computer. Remembering such weird names as DIR, CD, MD, RD, CHKDSK, FDISK, VER, ATTRIB, REN, DEL etc. along with their syntax and usage was a great accomplishment. But I had a problem understanding this: DOS has a separate dedicated command for every action; literally every action, except? creating a file!

Yes, we used COPY CON filename to create a file with name filename. Anyone can say that it is a form of COPY command. So, why was creating a file different than all other commands? I didn?t understand it, till I found out how to print using DOS, almost four years later.

DOS uses different names for the attached devices, I learnt. PRN was one such name.TYPE filename would display the contents of a file and TYPE filename > PRN would print it instead of displaying. Curiosity brings many hidden matters out. PRN would surely mean Printer and will redirect the output to the printer instead of console.Console (monitor) is the implicit default output device, and it can be bypassed if needed. So, how to put it explicitly? There must be some means to do that. Yes, there is! TYPE filename > CON performs exactly same function as TYPE filename. These special names for the devices really mean something special for the operating system and those names can not be used as folder or file names:CON, PRN, NUL, COM1 to COM9, LPT1 to LPT9, which stand for CONsole, PRiNter, NULl,serial COMmmunication ports, Line PrinTer ports.

The time has changed and Operating System can also be fooled! But still, many people think that it is not possible to create a folder by name CON. Using the path of network drive, thesespecial names can also be used as folder names! Here is how:

  • Goto DOS
  • Type MD \\.\C:\CON. The folder will be created. You can check it in Windows Explorer also, but you can?t access it
  • To delete the folder, type RD \\.\C:\CON

In short, use the network path syntax instead of absolute path syntax.

Now on to the practical aspect of this. Why can?t we create it directly but using the network path syntax? The answer is simple. A computer can have only one default console, printer, null etc. So, if it is accessed from a network, theoretically, the console should belong to another node in the network. Since that node may not have a device which can be referred using the name CON, it will no longer be considered as a reserved name. Hence, the folder can be created.

The next time when someone asks the question why we can?t create a folder by name CON, say with confidence that it is not true?

In theory, if one were to be sucked into a particularly massive black hole, you would avoid being turned into spaghetti due to the large event horizon. Also, once you reached a certain point within the horizon, time would seemingly stop for an eternity, and you would be able to see everything that had been sucked into the black hole for the past few millenia, and even more mindbogglingly, would be able to see all the objects that are to be sucked into the black hole over the next few millenia.

When cat's have sex the female will utter a loud yowl as the male pulls out of her. This is because a male cat's penis has a band of about 120?150 backwards-pointing spines, which are about one millimeter long; upon withdrawal of the penis, the spines rake the walls of the female's vagina which is a trigger for ovulation. This act also occurs to clear the vagina of other sperm in the context of a second (or more) mating, thus giving the later males a larger chance of conception

When dogs mate, the male develops a "knot", which is a polite way of saying it has a giant bulge at the base of its shaft. This occurs while the male is inside the female, such that the bulge is bigger then the female's opening, preventing them from being separated until the male has finished and the bulge disappears.

In most American states

little known fact: USA is that is NOT America... America is made up 35 independent countries. Don't know if they teach this in the US or not...

example: France is not Europe

The moon is slowly but surely escaping Earth's gravity well, and will eventually be flung out into space, never to be seen again.

To a great aggravation for Moon, it won't. Portion of Earth's rotational energy (due to some complicated stuff I don't really dig) does cause Moon to "fall up", true, but Moon cannot ever leave. Instead, Earth and Moon would reach a state where they would always face each other with the same side, due to Earth at that state being unable to transfer rotational energy to the Moon anymore.

And even without that, Moon's escape would require much more time than the age of Universe. Before that Sun will gobble both and quite probably Andromeda and Milky Way will collide, rendering "Moon's escape efforts" moot.

See, e.g.: http://en.wikipedia....bit_of_the_Moon

Long something you don't know is long :p

Edit: well, just Googling sh*t up and posting a link is always faster than trying to compose a some quasi-scientific crud answer using different words and expressions so as to avoid being correctly guessed whether I do actually know what I'm talking about or not

Open Microsoft Word and type =rand (200, 99) and then press ENTER

Incorrect.

You can create one using a DOS-Prompt.

pick any three numbers, now repeat the same three numbers in order so you get six digits (i.e., 123 = 123123).

Divide this three times (by 7, 11 and 13 in any order you wish) and you'll always end up with your first three numbers.

I hope multiplying a 3 digit number by 1001 and then dividing by 1001 always give the same number :)

"Bulldogs were original named and bred as a means of calming Bulls. They did this by running up to a bull and biting it on the gum/lips. This was done as in many large mammals, such as horses, cows and others. Doing so will hypnotize and calm the animal allowing for it to be checked or made compliant"

although this is true, its primary purpose was to suffocate the animal during fights.

:)

fact, a modern pigs gestation period lasts for 3 months 3 weeks 3 days EXACTLY

    • O&O ShutUp10 3.1.1104 by Razvan Serea O&O ShutUp10 offers a simple yet effective way to take control of your Windows privacy. It provides access to almost 50 privacy-related tweaks, most of them hidden or not easily accessible to the average computer users. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10/11 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated. Using ShutUp10 you can easily disable Windows Defender, turn off telemetry, disable peer-to-peer updates, turn off Wi-Fi Sense, disable automatic Windows updates, turn off and reset Cortana and more. ShutUp10 allows you to create a System Restore point before you apply any changes, so that you can revert your system at any time if you run into problems. O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days! O&O ShutUp10 Free and Premium The latest version brings O&O ShutUp10 Premium, expanding the app’s long-standing privacy controls with automatic enforcement of user-defined settings. Instead of manually rechecking options after every Windows update, users can set their preferred privacy configuration once—or apply recommended settings in a single click—and the tool continuously monitors them in the background. If Windows 10 or 11 re-enables disabled features or introduces new data collection paths, Premium restores the chosen settings automatically without user intervention. The free version remains available and fully functional for manual adjustments, offering the same core privacy controls for Windows. However, the Premium tier is aimed at users who want long-term, hands-off protection, adding automatic reapplication after updates, ongoing monitoring, and optional notifications to ensure privacy settings remain consistent over time. • Fascinating...W h i t e P o w e r is now also asterisks out.
    • In the past few days I have noticed two odd moderation activities. First, when I posted the term 'White Nationist Christian' it was asterisk's out. When I changed it to **** it was allowed! Second, in the Politics is a ###business thread I was allowed to post that the GOP is a party of p e d ophiles but I was censored  when I posted the GOP are a party of p e d ophile protectors. Wtf Neowin. Please explain.
