Superman: Man of Steel (2013)

Recommended Posts

The only real problem with Man of Steel is the editing. By that, I mean the "style" used to put it together. A lot of scenes feel like you're walking into the scene a couple of minutes late.

Imagine you walked out to get some popcorn and walked back in while a scene was taking place. It wouldn't take you long to catch up with what's going on, but you still feel like you missed the set-up to the scene.

I think they were trying to cut out most of the "obvious" background and get directly to the point. While I think it worked, I can understand why people would be put off by the style in this age of "filming for the lowest common denominator". People are used to being shown everything- the guy walks to the car, opens the door, and gets in... As opposed to just being shown in the car.

Just saw the film, wow loving it. Very dark, less comic feel to it. But i can agree to your first sentence that a few scenes was like you saw it late. Or just walked into. Other then that a top film, Hope it get's the monies worth that it deserves. 9/10

SATURDAY, 5TH UPDATE: Finally, some official numbers. Warner Bros? and Legendary Pictures? Man Of Steel (4,207 theaters with 3D in 3,357 venues) grossed $44M in North America on Friday (including the $9M from midnights). ?A fantastic start to Father?s Day weekend,? gushed Warner Bros Pictures President, Domestic Distribution, Dan Fellman. It?s now the largest Friday June opening ever. ?Our CinemaScore of ?A-? with the youngest (under 18) and the oldest (over 50) age categories both rating the film an ?A? should certainly generate strong word of mouth as we continue our run in the heart of the lucrative summer play time.? The 3D screens generated 42% of Man Of Steel?s box office revenue and 32% of all admissions for 6.250M for Friday. The 331 IMAX theatres grossed $5.5M on Friday averaging $16,616 per location and ranking #5 of all time behind The Avengers? $5.9M. The Man Of Steel results helped total moviegoing this Friday increase +78% over last year?s box office. Unofficially, projections for the Superman reboot?s 3-day weekend are $105M-$115M with a 4-day cume of $115M-$125M including Thursday?s $12M worth of Wal-Mart sold tickets for the 7 PM show. Even with a longish running time of two hours and 23 minutes, the Chris Nolan-Zack Snyder-David S. Goyer-Henry Cavill PG-13 tentpole is packing a strong punch because of the 3D premium and immense wannasee sparked by masterful marketing. It took Nolan?s involvement to make Superman cool again (finally).

Internationally, Warner Bros says Man Of Steel is ranking #1 everywhere with a gross of $17.6M from 9,710 screens in the 24 overseas markets in release. The running cume from abroad is now $25.9M. Key markets that opened this weekend were the UK, Korea, and Mexico. The UK pulled in ?3.3M ($5.2M) from 574 situations, dominating the market with a 70% share and ranking as the biggest opening day in 2013 ? +11% bigger even than Iron Man 3. Mexico grossed an estimated Ps. 35.7M ($2.8M) from 2,600 screens, and, like the UK, garnered a 70% share of the market. Its Friday opening ranks as the 3rd biggest opening for a WB film. Korea continues to rank #1 with a 50% share of the Top 5 films nationwide and KRW 1.8M ($1.6M) from 990 screens, bringing the two-day tally to KRW 3.2M ($2.8M). Other notable cumes are The Philippines $2.9M (had biggest all-time industry opening day), Taiwan $1.5M (had biggest WB opening day ever), UAE $1.3M, Malaysia $1.3M.

Spoiler

The Wayne Enterprises logo is on a satellite that Zod destroys.

Zack Snyder was asked if he would like to see Batman and Superman team-up in Man of Steel 2. Here?s what he had to say:

?I don?t know. Everything is interesting at this point. And don?t forget that Lex is out there, doing who knows what??

Well guys I went to see it Friday night. All I have to say about this movie is this:

AWESOME

That dude nailed it as Superman. The visual effects were amazing. They really make you believe a man can fly. Outstanding film. Go check it out if you have a chance. Michael Shannon deserves an award for his role as General Zod. He was outstanding.

I really loved the film.

Huge hit at the BO for this film, that is for sure.

Can the sequel be here already?! :D We all know what it is going to be about :

A big Lex Corp truck was destroy near the end. There was no mention of Lex. None at all. Until that truck.

List of Easter Eggs in Man of Steel, some foreshadowing future films? Could well be....

'Man of Steel' sets box office record

After three decades, Warner Bros. has successfully resurrected its Superman franchise with Zack Snyder's darker, more violent take on the marquee superhero.

Man of Steel, directed by Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, debuted to $125.1 million at the Father's Day box office to score the top opening of all time for June. That figure includes $12 million grossed Thursday night from special Walmart screenings, putting the actual three-day figure at $113.1 million.

Either way, Man of Steel eclipsed previous June record-holder Toy Story 3, which debuted to $110.3 million in June 2010.

Man of Steel is a notable win for WB and Legendary Pictures, which co-financed the $225 million tentpole. In 2006, WB and Legendary's Superman Returns did okay business at the box office, but not enough to mark a new chapter for the franchise.

Man of Steel opens exactly 30 years after Superman III, the third entry in the wildly popular Christopher Reeve franchise. There was one more title in that series, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, although it fell flat at the box office in summer 1987.

Saw it last night and really liked it. :-)

Henry cavill nailed it, he is perfect as the Superman and even as Clark Kent.

I enjoyed the build up and only part that bothered me was the extended action near the end. Few more buildings and they would've flattened the Metropolic

Overall 9/10

Russell Crowe AI felt weird at times

I generally dislike the look of the modern superhero movies. It's very techy & "hollywood". The shots from this superman movie look really desaturated.

If I were writing a Batman or Superman movie I'd set it in the late 1930s, when the comics were first written.

And even though Nolan's Batman was the best, I still prefer the Animated Series to any of the movies. Serious is good, but there's such a thing as taking the material too seriously, imo.

Great movie. I really enjoyed the special effects and cinematography. I have a feeling it'll come close to Iron Man 3 in the box office. If you're a fan of Superman, then you should see this movie for what it tries to be. It's not the old Superman you're used to. This time around, he's darker and representative of what Superman would be like in our world today. If you see it with that in mind, then you'll most likely enjoy it.

It was nice seeing the Wayne Industries logo on the satellite that was destroyed during the fight between Superman and General Zod. The first half of the movie was superb and the way they showed the origin story (flashbacks) was great. It meant they could use more time for Superman and the rest of the movie. As for the second half, it was great but not as good as the first. It felt kinda rushed but I don't blame them. They needed to show a lot of action because of the nature of their Kryptonian powers. And they needed to conclude the story.

I'm really happy that they're going forward with a sequel. The fact that Superman killed General Zod sets the tone for the kind of character he should be. After all, this is a realistic Superman and not one that sits on a moral high horse 100% of the time. I hope we see Lex Luthor and a cameo appearance of a Justice League member.

I quite enjoyed it, but I was somewhat disappointed that it seemed a bit disjointed and jumped so from scene to scene so. In that regard I think I see what twotone was referring to, as Synder has done better character work, despite the good performances by Crowe et all.

The special effects were amazing, absolutely epic. Leona was a complete badass (love the Snyder 'shutter' work on her)

well superman + zod is more powerful then all the aliens and avengers combined. lol!

Only the Man of Steel can make the Avengers tiny.

I thought I was watching Star Wars, at first.

My mind kept wondering off.

Was like watching the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie.

The has-been actors didn't add to the appeal.

I suppose it was entertaining, and that's what people paid for.

A directors cut could go a long way to filling in those gaps in character development; still I enjoyed it and thought it was good. Great acting from Cavill in particular who definitely fit the role, Costner, Crowe, Shannon and A Adams were also excellent but Antje Traue was sublime as Faora, shame we didnt see more of her, just the actual script let the movie down for me. However the action is simply on another level to anything in previous CBM's and makes The Avengers characters look positively puny in comparison. This is the sort of action I expected from the Avengers but all they did was make a few holes in the road. MOS 2 and Justice League should be something special.

I don't know why I keep calling her Leona, Faora! damnit! :)

I think fixing the production/character issue is doable with a director's cut (seems to be a production issue, the teasers did a better job of selling certain points than the movie did - the footage was fine, the editing not so much.)  Plus its ripe territory for the sequal w/Lex etc, now that they've established why he's called Superman.

I just wonder how this one will translate when I see it on the small screen.  It was so visceral I can only thank IMAX for such a seat pounding experience.  You literally felt every blow.  (And the low note they were hitting during the gravity drill scene, zomgz whomp)

Yea, the plot holes were easily overlooked because the move rocked

so much. But that editing job... on a second viewing, the "thrown into a scene"

feeling was more pronounced.

I think the overall effect gave the movie a "documentary" feeling, where it's like

multiple people narrating from different points in the same story.

Interesting point, I can see how that could be seen as a somewhat documentary style.

Plot quibbles for me regarding the Kryptonians:

1) Can anyone clarify how/when Kryptonian 'atmosphere' (whatever that is) can take their powers away? Is it no longer simply recent exposure to a yellow sun?

2) How it is it their suits 'protected' them from the painful effects of our sun/atmosphere...yet they still had some super powers while in them? Zod didn't get his heat vision till he took off the suit, right? Or, like flying, had he simply not learned to do it yet?

3) Does the blood they got from Cal carry a portion (or even complete record, hologram style) of the codex?  I still don't quite get what that was or meant.

    • Microsoft further improving Windows 11 Taskbar with latest builds by Sayan Sen Microsoft has released new Windows 11 builds for users flighting the Experimental channels. The new builds are 26300.8758 for Windows 11 26H2, 28120.2374 for 26H1, and 29617.1000 for future platforms. There are improvements related to the Taskbar, File Explorer and more with the new update. The full changelogs are given below: First we have the build 26300.8758: Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out [Taskbar] Taskbar customization just got easier. As we continue to make improvements to the Taskbar experience mentioned last month, we've introduced a dedicated Taskbar Size setting, making it simpler to find, understand, and personalize your ideal taskbar experience. UI showing the new Taskbar Size setting in Settings. We've also made refinements to the transitions between taskbar sizes for a smoother overall experience. [File Explorer] We've improved the reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane. The pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find and review at a glance. Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrative mode. Fixed an issue where the confirmation dialog might display an internal Recycle Bin file name instead of the original file name when permanently deleting a file. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. Up next we have build 28120.2374: Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes [Mobile Device Settings] You can add and manage your mobile devices in Settings under Bluetooth & Devices > Mobile Devices. On this page, you can manage features such as using your device as a connected camera or accessing your device's files in File Explorer. [Remote Recovery Management] Added a recovery remote management plug-in to extend WinRE management capabilities for MDM providers. [Input] The emoji panel (Windows key + period (.)) now uses GIPHY as the GIF provider, delivering a smoother GIF browsing and sharing experience following the deprecation of the Tenor API. Finally we have the changelog for Windows 11 build 29617.1000: Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out [Windows Update] As announced in the Windows Update announce blog, we are now bringing a new unified update experience to reduce the number of reboots you see per month. We are starting by coordinating driver, .NET, and firmware updates to align with the monthly quality update, reducing the update experience to a single monthly restart. See the blog for more information. [Windows Magnifier] Magnifier now gives you more control over how you zoom. You can type an exact zoom percentage directly in the magnifier toolbar to land on precisely the level you need. We've also added preset step increments (5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, and 400%) to the Settings dropdown, so you can jump to common levels in a single click. Whether you need a subtle boost or a dramatic close-up, Magnifier adapts to how you want to zoom. Enter an exact percentage or jump to preset steps —5% up to 400%. Feedback: Share your thoughts in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Accessibility > Magnifier. [Accessibility] We're introducing screen tint, a new accessibility setting that applies a color overlay across your entire display, softening its intensity so it's easier on your eyes throughout the day. If bright, saturated screens leave you with tired or sensitive eyes by the end of a long session, screen tint can help. Screenshot showing UI for screen tint in Accessibility, with color presets and a strength slider. To get started, open Settings > Accessibility (or press WIN + U) and look for screen tint under the Vision section. From there, you can: Pick from six preset colors or choose a custom color of your own. Adjust the tint strength slider from a subtle wash to full intensity. Night light warms your display to reduce blue light that can interfere with sleep. Screen tint reduces overall screen intensity to ease eye fatigue and light sensitivity during the day. They tackle different problems and you can use both at the same time, one working on warmth and the other on intensity. Note that turning on screen tint will disable color filters, and vice versa. If you currently rely on color filters, you might need to keep screen tint turned off. Feedback: Share your thoughts in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Accessibility > Narrator. [Voice Access] Voice Access now supports Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), and Korean (South Korea). [Audio] Continuing our work on improving Sound Settings, we've made a few more updates in this build: We've adjusted the description text for the Allow option in properties for audio devices to include the current state of the device, to improve the clarity of the text and the purpose of the button actions. "Listen to this device" is now available in properties for audio devices, so you don't need to enter Control Panel for this functionality. [Multiple Desktops] Improved explorer reliability when switching between multiple desktops. [Storage] We've updated the dialog when creating a Dev Drive to now support specifying the size in GB instead of only MB. This has also been added when changing the size of volumes under Settings > System > Storage. [Personalization] This update improves color selection accuracy when adjusting your accent color to match your wallpaper when automatic accent color selection is enabled in Personalization settings. This update improves wallpaper persistence reliability across restarts and upgrades, including better support for large-resolution wallpapers and other scenarios to prevent solid color wallpaper fallback. [Display and Graphics] Improves the reliability and persistence of applying color profiles. You can view the official blog posts here (link1, link2, link3) on Microsoft's site.
