Improved security, improved file transfer, better management of updates, will be supported for longer than 7, native USB 3 support, support for UEFI (Secure Boot), if you have a pendrive over 16GB you can carry your entire PC around with you and simply plug it into someone elses.

You mean fix file transfer which is broken since WIndows XP?

Native USB3 support is coming with Windows 7 SP2.

Improved Security like what?

Management Updates like what?

Support for UEFI (Secure Boot) , not essential

Same for Pendrive thing.

Being supported longer than Windows 7 is quite irrelevant.

I am just being real....

I agree. It doesn't work unless you have a touch screen pc which the majority do not have so is more a hastle than anything else

did u use windows 8(not developer preview coz its only for developers to develop metro apps and its not even close to feature complete) ??

if not stfu till its release

- WinRT apps can not have admin access so you won't have to worry about viri and malware when using WinRT apps.

- Updates are handled through the store so you won't need every program to have it's own update mechanism running in the background.

- Secure boot is very essential. It could kill off rootkits.

- You'll also have the ability to mount ISOs

- MSE is being merged with Defender and will be integrated into the OS

- Notification system

- Greatly improved task manager

- The OS in general is supposed to be lighter

They haven't even shown off the finished product so there will be more stuff in there.

Some apps require Admin access but we will see how that all words. Updates apply only to apps you got through the story which is not applicable for most apps installed in PC. Mounting ISO is a nice thing. MSE bleh, is this gonna be optional to remove?

No idea if MSE is removeable but I would suspect that you can disable it. That's one of those things we won't know until it drops and we get our grubby little hands on it.

Look, you just will never like Win8 whatever people will say about it. so why do you keep hanging around in the Win8 threads and keep asking the same question.

People keep giving you heaps of cool new features other then Metro, but you keep shooting them down as irrelevant to you.

Just stay on Win7 and stop bothering us

This is such an interesting post. I'll keep my opinion for the next month when Windows 8 Beta will be already released.

For those who think Windows 8 will fail because of the Metro thing I recommend you to read this

http://blogs.msdn.co...is-useless.aspx

Windows, the OS itself is not important. What makes Windows important are the applications. I think Windows 8 and Metro will be a success if it appears an App that is really worth it for everyone. And it may be a failure if nobody develops Metro Apps or not good enough.

So let's wait for the Apps and then we can discuss about the UI.

here's one thing I will note when it comes to software as a product*:

you have to give your users a really good reason to purchase the latest version.

apple and adobe are terrible at this. they only release one "god feature" to make you drop several hundred or thousand on it and every year you run and buy a new one for that one "god feature".

microsoft has given us many features that are very useful and very nice and a reason to buy the next copy of windows.

the change from xp to vista was not enough for people to shell out for it, but the change from xp to 7 and the change from vista to 7 was.

imagine if the only change in windows 8 was the explorer file transfer and mabye a little bit of extra buttons in the explorer.exe windows..... would it be worth dropping 200 bucks on? not really.

it feels as if microsoft really wants to add features to the OS to make it enough of a change to justify spending the 200 or so to upgrade to it in a better way than apple ever would.

I think the changes from XP to Vista were worth $200 but people didn't see it that way because XP was still rocking and still rocks somewhat. Changes from Windows Vista to Windows 7 were $100 due all the optimisations done behind the scene.

One must not forget the vastly improved Explorer interface and functionality (and some performance).

One must also not forget the vastly improved task manager and functionality

One must also not forget that W8 uses less memory by default giving more memory to caching and applications

One must also not forget that PC is not for everyone, the tablet has many advantages - and W8 is the first Windows that makes SENSE on a tablet

One must not forget that Windows GUI hasn't changed drastically ever. This change may help with anti-Windows stigma. It is a Windows that doesn't look like a Windows

It looks FRESH, CRISP, and FUNCTIONAL.

Windows 8 is what Windows 7 should have been + METRO.

Same thing was said about Ribbon interface, but Office 2007 beat Office 2003 in sales, and Office 2010 beat them both, by an even larger margin.

I never thought of Ribbon interface as being wrong. I thing it is cool and i am glad they are making Windows 8 Desktop using it. Metro Start Menu is replacemenet for classic Start menu and in its nature doesn't fit the rest of eco system. It would be like building Web page with one style and than user clicks something and system takes him to a page which is entirely complete visually mind transition where it feels so disconnected from previous screen and work flow user was in.

Windows 8 is going to be recorded in the books as example of what not to do when you are designing something. MS went against all UI principles. The bottom line, fugliest OS ever made in the history of Computing.

How do you know for sure that MS is not going to give the desktop a style overhaul to match the new start screen?

Ms has been known for leaving the visuals out until the last moment.

Maybe you are right, but somehow i don't see that happening. Consumer Preview will be the best indication of final release and perhaps i should wait until i pass final judgement on it. If they change Desktop style to match Metro Start Menu Style well good job.

So what happens if Windows 8 sale fails like Windows Vista? Are they going to still push Metro or completely scratch idea cause i know that Windows 8 sale is going to be terrible.

There is no possible way you can "know" any thing of that sort. Unless you have a time machine you're not telling us about.

OP's concepts look very bland and poor. They look old / MAC-ish and probably would be painful to use in the long run.

In the long run, getting rid of glass and having the classic desktop be more-so merged with METRO is a good idea (if it works ergonomically - Windows is not Ubuntu - Windows must make RATIONAL GUI choices which benefit people). Lets wait for Windows 9 for that.

Windows 8 signifies the transition of the GUI IMO.

If you get rid of the classic aero desktop, you will end up having alienated a bunch of users who are used to it. Besides the Classic Desktop in Windows 8 look more Windows 8-ish and generally BETTER.

it is for backwards compatibility.

And so thatdweebs would stop screaming that they hate the new interface.

You know if you switch to the Windows basic theme in the DP it meshes A LOT better with the metro vibe that MS is going for in Win 8.

metro interface is good for tablets/phones etc (since you usually do a single thing there) but is not good enough for full desktop environment. IMO they should've separated the two products. I don't plan running windows8 on anything with touchscreen therefor metro is useless for me.

Works equally well on desktop machine too that lacks a touchscreen. You know since you're only ever directly using one app at a time anyway. You may have 100's open but you're not using them all simultaneously, thereby making this 1 app at a time limitation-that-really-isn't-a-limitation of metro irrelevant.

..snipped..

Windows 8 is going to be recorded in the books as example of what not to do when you are designing something. MS went against all UI principles. The bottom line, fugliest OS ever made in the history of Computing.

I think you're confused with either Ubuntu's Unity crap, or any Mac ever made. But certainly not Win8.

Metro needs to less in windows 8, who cares if Aero is 7 years old, it works! Metro can have the "start" tile/marketplace/free advertising space; but that should be where it ends. When you leave that tablet-like screen you should be back to a normal Windows desktop experience. Save the rest for mobile devices. If users really have that much issue using metro for mobile and Windows 7/8 for desktop then I really feel sorry for them. People (clearly) have been capable of understanding/using different/altered variants of OS's for years. It does not have to be so unified even though that is where they are going.

On the same note, I also use OS X as my main OS these days, and I can confidently say. iOS can GTFO my (mac) OS X just as quickly as metro can GTFO my Windows partitions.

I like this kinda look:

http://blog.gsmarena...ve-looked-like/

:D

This is almost exactly what the desktop version of Windows 8 should've looked like.

I honestly don't have a problem with the "Start screen" interface for tablets. It works well. But when you're using a keyboard and mouse, these full-screen apps with giant UI elements and low information density are ridiculous. A cursor and a finger are not the same.
