You refer to "they" a few times implying the same people who you see defend their are the same people who don't handle them responsibly. While there may be a few idiots who do both, the vast majority are responsible.

Well, hopefully, the vast majority of people in the US who owns guns knows the basic rules of gun safety. The opposite would be very worrisome don't you think?

Yet, if you look at the article, two other cases of children killed by guns as they gain access to guns are referenced.

This is the third one in a short time span and there have been other news snippet posted here about similar accidents in the last year.

Guns are items that must be handled with care and in the strict framework of safety rules. If one does not follow the rules by laziness, by overconfidence, by idiocy, accidents are bound to happen and as this story demonstrates, accidents involving guns can be tragic.

So, yes, my concern is the number of people who knows how to handle a gun and the number of people who believe they know how to handle a gun.

Given that there are plenty of guns in the US and even if the proportion of idiots is low, there might be a significant number of people putting themselves or others at risk.

Surely I don't need to refer to the cliche that good news is bad news?

Huh?

An unloaded gun is kinda har to fire if you need it quick. The trick is to pull the magazine or, in a revolver, the shells if you leave it unsecured. But then the idea is NOT to leave it unsecured, hence gun safes even in cars.

As to safeties: you do realize that a large percentage of handguns have no safety? Those with double-action triggers, which both engage and tension the mechanism and fire the weapon, often don't have one. Common on revolvers and compact concealed carry auto pistols including my SIG P250 carry weapon.

Sadly, I know that there are plenty of handguns which do not have safety and it really baffles me. I would not buy a handgun without a separate physical safety.

They really aren't that useful on a double action gun. It only takes a couple lbs of force to release a typical safety, but the trigger pull on a double-action is anywhere from 6 to 10+ lbs - rather stiff as you're both cocking and shooting with a single lever because it's carried un-cocked Any heavier a force for the safety and it becomes too slow to use for defensive purposes.

OTOH the trigger pull kn a single action can be as light as 3 lbs since the gun is usually carried cocked - and easier for small child. Faster to shoot though. SA's definitely need a safety.

Then there are the double action/single actions (DA/SA) - the first shot is double action for safety and the rest single action for speed.

I carry something at all times but it is on me not laying around in the car for obvious reasons - wouldn't do me no good if I got out and someone tried to car jack me with the gun laying under a seat. At night I keep a glock 19 in a locked box finger print activated lock at my bed side with 2 clips ready..takes me seconds to open and load. All other guns are securely locked up in a safe and yes I have a 5 year old running around the house.

It all revolves around ignorant people but the gun is not at fault and no need more more gun laws...people just need to learn common sense.

Bingo, but a SIG P250 .40 in full size config (it's size convertible) with 2 magazines and a tactical light & laser combo.

Fk thats awful, America needs to get a grip on gun law / gun education! Glad I live in the UK tbh

UK is so perfect, innit bruv.

I mean the daily stabbings, the shootings in South London that usually end with innocents getting killed by random nigerians wannabe american rap-thugs and so on ? How 'bout the teenagers askin me for weed as I walk home every now and then. How about guns being sold in the underground world by arab youth. The constant threat of islamists , (read comments there) is evergrowing as ever, UK suffocating on it as it follows EU laws which are light compared to the true freedom of speech in America. They burned the american flag on 4th of July and nothing happened, let them try that in America.

Damn, America is the root of all bloody hell, I guess.

As for the topic at hand, clearly it's the father's fault. But, calling out a whole nation and boasting your place for a single dude's misconduct is wrong.

Huh?

News outlets overwhelmingly sell bad news. Fear sells. You won't ever hear of a case of child not killing himself. Letting this bad news alter your perception so much is naive when in fact the issue is not that prevalent.

This interactive map of criminals thwarted by citizens with guns is interesting. http://www.cato.org/...d-self-defense/

    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
    • Didn’t Dbrand once complain that Casetify was ripping off their designs a well? seems pretty bad of them to try and get around Valve’s copyright this way with that in mind.
    • Dbrand thought they could get away with this Steam Machine case, Valve disagreed by David Uzondu Image via Dbrand Dbrand has cancelled its highly anticipated Companion Cube enclosure for the Valve Steam Machine, which it teased back in November of last year with a concept render and sign-up page, because it did not ask Valve for permission first before manufacturing the case. According to Dbrand, it took the "backwards approach" of building the product first before asking for permission from the copyright holder. Seven months of work went into the project, requiring over a thousand engineering hours from the design team. Workers developed forty-four sets of injection molding tools, making a unique mold for each sub-component of the crate. When the Companion Cube went live on Monday last week, it, according to Dbrand, quickly became the second-fastest-selling product in the company's fifteen-year history, racking up orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Customers eagerly bought the $129.95 deluxe edition or the bare-bones $99.95 version, which the manufacturer cheekily branded as the "Poverty Cube". It was around this time that the legal eagles at Valve descended on the accessory maker with a formal demand. The developer pointed out that the iconic block design remains protected intellectual property from the game Portal, so unlicensed sales had to stop. Dbrand said that all its pleas to salvage the project with the Valve team, including proposals to run a properly licensed release under official terms "with their blessing", fell on deaf ears, so it had no choice but to obey and remove every trace of the product from the internet. If you bought the enclosure, the company said that banks will process your refund by the end of this week, but if it still hasn't arrived in your account by then, you should not hesitate to contact support. The Steam Machine itself is a high-performance console that Valve designed directly to bring PC gaming into the living room. It was announced on 12th November 2025 (the same day Dbrand announced the Cube) and runs on the Linux-based SteamOS, the same OS that powers the Steam Deck. As for the price, due to the shortage of memory and storage chips, the hardware cost landed much higher than people were expecting, starting at $1,049 for the 512 model (without a controller) or $1,128 with the new gamepad. The premium 2 TB model pushes those prices even higher, selling at $1,349 for the standalone console and hitting $1,428 if you want the bundle.
